Chapter 37 Teaching Herbs

When Yun Shenghua got home last night, besides talking about Liu's affairs, he also mentioned that Yun Chu wanted to learn to read. Everyone else thought it was a good thing, but Zhang subconsciously looked at Yun Ling and asked her if she wanted to learn to read with her.

Yunling then brought up the old man's advice from her dream, which finally stopped Zhang from trying to persuade her, and the matter of Yunling learning to read was settled.

So early in the morning, Yun Shenghua taught Yun Chu how to hold a pen, how to write, and how to create a stroke. The first character he taught her was "Yun," and then her name, Yun Chu.

Yun Chu was enjoying her studies, but she was reluctant to finish writing on all the paper. Besides, she still had Yun Ling, her parents, and other family members to write on. Just as she was thinking about this, Yun Ling said out of the blue, "Sister, let's go up the mountain."

What are you going up the mountain for?

"Don't you, as a female doctor, need to identify medicinal herbs?"

Yun Chu blushed again. She had told her family that she wanted to learn to read, but she hadn't mentioned becoming a female doctor. But now that Yun Ling was offering to teach her to identify medicinal herbs, how could she not be excited?

She might even be able to make money by selling herbs, which would allow her to buy more paper to practice calligraphy. However, the task of collecting and selling herbs originally belonged to Yunling. Wouldn't her doing this be stealing Yunling's way of making money? That would probably be inappropriate.

Yunling knew what Yunchu was worried about, so she simply spoke her mind, "Sister, I'm so busy. I can't keep up with picking all the herbs. Grandma always says that good things shouldn't go to outsiders. Why don't you pick them and sell them? You can earn some hard-earned money and it will be easier to buy paper."

Yun Chu had no doubts about what Yun Ling said, because Yun Ling had only planted small black mushrooms at first, then gradually flower mushrooms, and now black fungus. Who knows what else might grow in the future? Thinking about it this way, she felt much better and agreed.

Hearing that they were going up the mountain, Yun Ruochun quickly accompanied them, carrying a basket on her back and chopping some firewood along the way.

On this trip up the mountain, Yunling discovered that the mountain had regained much of its vitality. Perhaps it was because more people had gone to the city to find work, especially since Yun Dazhuang and the others were no longer around. Even wild vegetables were sprouting up everywhere. Yunling was naturally delighted, thinking that she might even find something good.

"Young lady, you rarely go up the mountain. Stay behind me and I will protect you."

"Aunt, no need. I'll help my sister identify the herbs. If anything happens, we'll shout loudly."

After much hesitation, Yun Ruochun finally went to chop firewood after Yun Ling repeatedly assured her.

Yunling pulled Yun Chu toward the west and instructed her, "The ecology here is good, and there are many medicinal herbs. Be careful where you step, or you might accidentally trample them."

Yun Chu's heart immediately jumped. She carefully followed behind Yun Ling, stepping where Yun Ling had stepped.

"Sister, do you see that fibrous, grass-like thing?"

Yun Chu looked in the direction Yun Ling indicated, but couldn't see clearly. She went a little further ahead and sure enough, she saw it. Wasn't that grass? Could it be a medicinal herb?

"This is called 'inch winter,' but not every plant can grow to 'inch winter,' it depends on the situation."

Of course, Yunling is an exception.

Yunling gently dug out the roots of the grass, and saw that they were covered with tiny, yellowish-white things about the size of corn kernels. "These are them."

Yun Chu was surprised. She had thought it would be hard to find, but Yun Ling found it so quickly.

"This 'Cun Dong' can moisten the lungs and stop dry cough, as well as relieve pain. If you have pimples on your face, you can cook 'Cun Dong', mung beans, Rehmannia glutinosa, and pigeon together to make a soup. However, it varies from person to person, and you need to take your pulse to make a diagnosis."

Yun Chu noted it down.

Yunling led her forward, saying, "Sister, look, this bunch of bright red fruit is the Schisandra chinensis that the owner of Ren'an Hall mentioned the other day."

Yunling picked two and handed them to Yunchu, saying, "These are especially good for replenishing energy. We still have to stay on the mountain for quite some time, so eating something can relieve our fatigue."

"Lingniang, you know so much."

"It's all thanks to that old man."

Yunling had memorized these words perfectly, and her burden had lessened with each repetition. Now, she could be described as "unrestrained."

Yunling also led Yun Chu to dig up some five-finger peach and ox-dali. When Yun Ruochun arrived, she saw that their hands were covered in mud. "How is Chu-jie'er learning?"

"It's alright, I've memorized them all."

Yunling put everything into the basket and said, "Sister is clever; she understands immediately."

“You two sisters are both clever. Let’s stop here for today. We don’t know if it will be dangerous later. Let’s go down the mountain.” Yun Ruochun took the initiative to pick up Yun Ling’s basket and walk forward.

Suddenly, a strange noise came from the jungle. Yun Ruochun quickly pulled the people behind her, saying, "You guys go quickly."

Yun Chu hurriedly took a step to run, but Yun Ling remained as steady as a mountain. She didn't sense any danger, but instead smelled a sweet scent, perhaps indicating the presence of a treasure.

"Auntie, let's go inside and take a look."

"There might be danger inside. What if there are wild boars?"

"Didn't you hunt wild boars before? Besides, that sound just now didn't sound like a wild boar. Maybe there's some treasure."

Yun Ruochun would never believe what others said, but she would definitely believe what Yun Ling said.

The three of them pushed through the grass and went further in. The buzzing sound grew louder the further they went. Looking up at the treetops not far away, they saw large beehives hanging on the trees, with bees buzzing around them. Yun Chu got goosebumps all over her body again and quickly took a few steps back to look elsewhere.

When Yunling and Yunruochun saw it, their eyes lit up as if they had seen gold, and they wished they could live up there.

“Ling’er, God, this honey is a real treasure. I only got to taste it once when I was with your father, and I still miss it dearly.”

Yun Ruochun's swallowing sound infected Yun Ling, who then swallowed hard and went straight to the tree. Because of her special ability, the bees didn't even bother to approach her.

On the contrary, as soon as Yun Ruochun got a little closer, the bees buzzed around her, scaring her so much that she dared not move. Being stung by a bee is extremely painful!

"Ling-jie, be careful!"

"From my province."

These are wild bees, unlike farmed native bees. They taste better, are milder and purer, and naturally have higher nutritional value.

Yunling counted them and there were six beehives in total. She would take two beehives back with her and leave the rest for them to overwinter.

Yunling fastened the hem of her clothes, took a rope from Yun Ruochun's basket, and started climbing the tree. For Yunling, who was used to climbing trees, this was not a difficult task.

As soon as she climbed to the honeycomb, the bees guarding the honey buzzed and stuck to Yunling's body until she used her powers again, at which point they were forced to leave.

Yunling loosened the beehive, tied it with a rope, and slowly lowered it to the ground. She used the same method to remove the beehive from another tree. Since Yun Ruochun would attract bees if she got too close, Yunling carried both beehives down the mountain.
