Chapter 16 Not a Concubine

The youngest son married a woman who was wealthier than his family. She was incapable of lifting a finger and was always pampered. Su was not entirely satisfied with this daughter-in-law.

Normally, she would have gone along with her sister-in-law and given her a good scolding for her daughter-in-law's faults.

But thinking of her daughter-in-law's ability to receive divine guidance, Madam Su suppressed her dissatisfaction.

She glanced at her sister-in-law with a nonchalant expression. "What nonsense are you spouting? Is your third nephew the kind of person who would give in to a woman just because she's being clingy? Besides, she's your third nephew's wife. Stop calling her a vixen all the time. What kind of behavior is that?"

“It wasn’t like that before, but it’s hard to say now. Men, once they have a wife, they forget their mothers! Sister-in-law, don’t be careless!” Lu Cuilan looked at Su Shi with some curiosity, feeling that she was acting a bit strangely.

Normally, they would have already started criticizing Jiang's faults.

But today she actually spoke well of Jiang.

That's strange, so very strange!

Just as Lu Cuihua was wondering what was going on, she saw three burly men emerge from the woods, one of whom handed a turtledove to Jiang Tangtang.

"Sister-in-law, who is that? Could it be that Jiang is having an affair right in front of Sanlang?"

Upon seeing the dove, Lu Cuihua's eyes widened, and she kept swallowing, wishing she could snatch the dove and swallow it whole.

"That's a doctor, treating your nephew." This time, Madam Su glared fiercely at her sister-in-law. "If you keep spouting nonsense, you're not allowed to come with us. How can you talk about your own nephew's wife like that?"

"Doctor? Shouldn't we be the ones treating the doctor to food? Why is it the other way around?" Lu Cuihua's big eyes darted between Jiang Tangtang and Li Shi.

Su also felt something was wrong.

Li Shi was all fierce when he left! Why is he bringing a turtledove back for his daughter-in-law now?

This person saw the daughter-in-law's abilities and knew that being ruthless wouldn't work, so they planned to please her.

At this moment, like Su Shi and Lu Cuilan, everyone was looking at the dove in Jiang Tangtang's hand with great envy.

Some of those ignorant children are already pulling on their parents' sleeves, begging for meat.

Li Shi glanced indifferently at the ravenous looks on everyone's faces and asked Jiang Tangtang calmly, "Little Fairy, aren't you leaving yet?"

Jiang Tangtang looked at the man in front of her and felt that he must be doing it on purpose, deliberately using her as a target.

But this man gave her a turtledove during a famine year when even a blade of grass was precious. If she doubted his intentions, she would be utterly ungrateful.

After her mind raced for a few moments, Jiang Tangtang gripped the dove tightly. "It doesn't look too hot anymore. It's time to set off."

She called out, "Father, Mother, and Brother, let's go!"

Target it may, she's determined to get that turtledove.

Upon hearing Jiang Tangtang's greeting, Old Man Lu and Madam Su immediately stood up, quickly packed their luggage, and prepared to set off.

As usual, Lu Shiwang shouldered his bundle and went to drive the oxcart.

Lu Cuilan was so shocked that her eyes almost popped out.

What happened in the past two months? Why are my elder brother and sister-in-law so obedient to Jiang Shi? How come she, a woman, is making such important decisions about when to stop fleeing the famine and when to leave?

"Mother, that vixen is really good at this. Not only has she managed to get Cousin Yan to listen to her, but now even my uncle and aunt listen to her."

Fang Peiru was ashamed of her disheveled appearance and embarrassed to show herself in front of Lu Shiyan, but Lu Shiyan kept his eyes closed and pretended to be asleep the whole time, as if he had forgotten about her, which still hurt Fang Peiru deeply.

"Back then, I wanted you to marry your cousin, but you wouldn't listen. Look at that Jiang family, they were still eating well and their faces were glowing on the way they fled the famine. They were served by the whole family, just like a young lady. If you had married them, you would have had an even better life."

Since Madam Su said that the man was the doctor who treated her nephew, Lu Cuilan naturally assumed that Li Shi was a friend that Lu Shiyan had made outside.

The turtledove in Jiang's hand must have been caught by Lu Shiyan's friend to help him improve his health.

If my daughter marries into that family, then the one who will accept that turtledove will be my daughter.

As her biological mother, she should at least get a share of the meat!

Fang Dalin also complained to his daughter, "Putting everything else aside, with Lu Sanlang's hunting skills, he would never let you go hungry. Look at how others have doves to eat on their way out of famine. You didn't listen to us, and now look what happened, you almost married a short-lived man!"

Five-year-old Fang Mingming didn't quite understand what the adults were saying, but he knew that his sister could eat meat if she married his third cousin. He shook Fang Peiru's hand and said, "Sister, why don't you go and marry your third cousin now?"

“That won’t do.” Lu Cuilan pulled her son aside and scolded her daughter, “If you marry now, you’ll be someone’s concubine. You’ll have to be inferior to the wife in everything. Unless your third cousin divorces Jiang, my good daughter will not be allowed to be someone’s concubine.”

"Don't worry, Mother!" Fang Peiru glanced confidently in Jiang Tangtang's direction. "It won't be long before Cousin Yan divorces that Jiang woman."

"That's true. In the past, Jiang used to rely on her looks and her family's money to fool your third cousin. But things are different now."

Lu Cuilan pursed her lips, deeply agreeing with her daughter's words, "We're on the road of fleeing famine now. With that delicate woman Jiang, who can't lift a finger and can't do anything, your third cousin will probably get tired of her soon."

Fang Peiru thought so too, "Mom, could you spare a moment to tell me to wash my face and change my clothes so I can go help my uncle's family?"

She would wait until Jiang's family couldn't do anything right before appearing to help.

With her skillful hands as a comparison, I believe that Cousin Yan will soon tire of Jiang and regret marrying her in a fit of pique, instead of waiting for me longer.

She could then subtly hint that her feelings hadn't changed, and her cousin Yan would surely divorce Jiang and accept her back.

Fang Peiru was just imagining the wonderful scene of Lu Shiyan divorcing Jiang Shi and marrying her again when Fang Dalin slapped her with the sole of his shoe. "I'm so thirsty my throat is burning, and I haven't even had a sip. You want to use this to wash your face? You unfilial daughter, I'll beat you to death."

The group was whispering to each other, and no one noticed them.

But Fang Dalin's loud voice and the way he whipped his daughter with the sole of his shoe immediately attracted the attention of many villagers.

Seeing that people were looking in their direction, Lu Cuilan quickly pulled her husband aside and whispered, "Honey, don't get angry. Peiru is only thinking of the family."

She winked at her husband, lowering her voice even further, "Think about that turtledove in Jiang's hand. Wasn't she just trying to get us a bite too? Why are you scolding the child?"

After listening to Lu Cuilan's advice and thinking about the turtledove, Fang Dalin finally put away the shoe sole.

However, he absolutely refused to bring out the life-saving water for his daughter to wash her face.

In the end, it was only after Fang Peiru repeatedly assured him that she would only wet a corner of the handkerchief that he reluctantly agreed to let his daughter wet a corner of the handkerchief to wash her face when the Lu family stopped to rest at night.
