Chapter 38 Schadenfreude

"Just bury it in the fire and burn it."

Jiang Tangtang thought for a moment and said, "But burning it like this is a bit of a waste of firewood. It would be best to put a big pot on top, fill it with water, add some spices, and put the beef and beef bones in it to cook."

The beef bone broth that's been cooked can be eaten by everyone soon. The remaining beef will be simmered with butter and spices to make a beef sauce, which will be stored in jars and eaten slowly during our escape from famine.

Just hearing Jiang Tangtang talk about it made Luo Taohua's mouth water. "Mom, why don't we do as my third sister-in-law said, take down the big iron pot, clean it up, and put the beef and beef bones in to cook?"

In the Great Zhou Dynasty, iron was known as black gold and was a rare and expensive commodity.

The Lu family's large iron pot was also a family heirloom. So, the Lu family took this large iron pot with them on their journey to escape famine.

Although the large iron pot was difficult to move, the Lu family had an oxcart at the time, so the pot was tied to the back of the cart and didn't get in too much of a hindrance.

However, we didn't use any large iron pots along the way. They were tied up tightly, so it will probably take some effort to remove them.

But Su wasn't concerned about whether the iron pot would be difficult to remove. Instead, she was wondering whether to listen to her third daughter-in-law and boil all the beef and bones.

If you don't cook them, these things definitely won't last long.

If the cow's meat can be preserved, the family can survive a little longer.

But if we boil it, we'll probably have to empty all the water from the water sacks in the house. What if we can't find water tomorrow?

Unable to make up her mind, Su habitually went to look at Old Man Lu.

But when Old Man Lu looked at her, he felt caught in a dilemma.

Finally, both elders looked at Jiang Tangtang and said, "Sanlang's wife, what do you think we should do?"

Both of them felt that Jiang Tang'ang was someone enlightened by the gods, and since the gods even took care of their sons, they would definitely treat her even better. Listening to her was always the right thing to do.

Jiang Tangtang said, "Didn't I just say? Set up the big pot and put all the beef and beef bones in it to cook!"

"Then let's listen to Sanlang's wife and put all the remaining beef and bones into the big pot to cook."

As soon as Old Man Lu spoke, Second Brother Lu immediately got up to move the large iron pot. Jiang Tangtang, remembering that he hadn't washed his hands after scrubbing the cow intestines with mud, quickly called for Eldest Brother Lu, who had returned from fetching water, to move the large iron pot.

Li Shi and a few others returned with Brother Lu.

None of them found a water source, but Li Shi found some medicinal herbs and, as was his habit, picked them and brought them back.

When they heard that a large pot was going to be used to cook beef, several people came over to help.

The large iron pot hadn't been used for many days and was a bit rusty. Jiang Tangtang had someone scrub it with grass, then cut off a small piece of scrap beef tallow. After heating the iron pot until it was red-hot, she used the beef tallow to wipe it clean.

Before the butter had even been rubbed around the iron pot twice, Jiang Tangtang cried out "Ouch!" and clutched her hand, showing a pained expression.

"What's wrong?" Su Shi and Zhou Qiongniang asked in unison. Lu Shiyan also opened his eyes and looked at Jiang Tangtang.

"I burned my hand on the iron pot," Jiang Tangtang said, her eyes brimming with tears.

“Tell me what you want to do from now on, and I’ll do it!” Lu Shiyan stood up and walked over.

"Madam, you are so kind." Jiang Tangtang said with tears in her eyes, "Just scrub the iron pot with butter to remove the rust, then pour in water, and put the beef and beef bones in."

There wasn't enough water, so the beef and bones couldn't be cleaned. Fortunately, Lu Shiyan had placed the beef on a tree stump to cut it. Plus, his knife skills were excellent; after cutting the beef and bones, he put them into the bone marrow, so they were relatively clean.

Of course, even if it wasn't clean, Jiang Tangtang couldn't be too picky. After all, the famine relief story she transmigrated into was currently experiencing a drought!

Lu Shiyan wiped the iron pot with butter to remove the rust before putting in water, beef, beef bones, and spices picked from the mountain.

Soon, the pot boiled, with lots of foam floating on top. Jiang Tangtang grabbed a spatula.

This time, she didn't let Lu Shiyan do it; instead, she took the spatula herself and slowly skimmed off the foam.

"Husband, could you go and find some more spices for me? Especially those little red fruits that Doctor Li and the others found, could you pick some more for me?"

She only just discovered that among the medicinal herbs Li Shi picked were chili peppers.

That's the soul of the beef sauce!

Just as Lu Shiyan was about to agree, he suddenly heard a rustling sound coming from the bushes. He frowned slightly and said, "Let's go later."

Jiang Tangtang smelled the aroma emanating from the large pot and nodded knowingly, saying, "It was my oversight. We'll go after my husband has eaten the beef."

Lu Shiyan didn't explain. He sat down and closed his eyes again.

After skimming off the foam, Jiang Tangtang covered the pot and began to simmer it slowly. As time went on, the spices in the pot began to react with the beef and bones, and even the lid couldn't hide the aroma emanating from the beef.

The Fang family sisters-in-law, disregarding their recent argument with Lu Cuilan, shamelessly asked, "Cuilan, your family slaughtered a cow, didn't they call you back for meat?"

"Even though they're fleeing famine, the Lu family is being incredibly rude! They didn't even bother to say a word. They're so stingy," said Fang Junmu, the third son of the Fang family, indignantly.

Lu Cuihua also harbored resentment towards her family.

But when she and her daughter were in danger, none of her brothers and sisters-in-law from the Fang family came to help her. When she lost her money, they did not comfort her, but instead kept questioning her about why she had hidden her money.

What does it matter to them whether she hides her private savings or not? That money was all hard-earned by her, working as a servant in wealthy households.

Why should she hand it over to the public fund so that everyone can use it?

What right do they have to question her?

She still wants to eat beef from her mother's family home? Where does she get the nerve?

Since they had already argued and fallen out, Lu Cuihua no longer maintained a facade of peace and bluntly mocked, "In the countryside, when you slaughter a pig for the New Year, you invite relatives over for a feast. That's just giving and receiving gifts."

Back in the village, my family invited you to meals several times, but did you ever reciprocate? Why should anyone invite you to eat now?

"The meat harvested during famine years isn't just meat; a single bite can mean a life. How dare you presume to eat the beef from my mother's family?"

"We didn't slaughter a pig for the New Year, how can we invite them?" Fang Junmu said matter-of-factly, and then turned to Fang Mulin and said, "Why don't you do something about your wife? We were just standing up for her, saying that her family doesn't value her, and instead you're criticizing the Fang family?"

Fang Mulin swallowed hard. "Cuilan, why don't you go back to your parents' house again? How old is Mingming? How long has he been eating dry rations? Look at him, he's practically skin and bones. Can you really bear to let him go hungry?"

Fang Mingming also cried out, "Mom, I want to eat meat, go get me some meat."

Lu Cuilan also wanted to go back to her parents' home to eat beef, but she didn't want the Fang family to take advantage of her. So, holding her son's hand, she went to call Fang Peiru, intending to take her two children back and shamelessly freeload. Suddenly, she heard a series of chaotic footsteps.

Fang Junmu was startled, but when he understood what was going on, he immediately gloated, "The Lu family is stingy. They won't even let us gnaw on a single cow bone. They deserve to be robbed by the refugees."

Fang Senlin, the eldest son of the Fang family, said to his younger brothers, "Let's go, let's hurry up and help."

Fang Junmu, always timid and fearful, shrank his neck and said, "I'm not going. Those bastards from the Lu family are stingy and deserve to be robbed."

Fang Senlin gave her a look of exasperation and whispered, "Are you stupid? Who told you to actually help? Couldn't you have seized the opportunity? Grab a few pieces of beef to eat while things were in chaos? Anyway, if the refugees rob them, it'll just benefit the refugees, so we might as well benefit."

Fang Junmu gave his older brother a thumbs-up, thinking that his older brother was the smartest.
