Chapter 56 Because I've liked your fiancée for a long time
This brings us to what happened ten years ago.
At that time, Gu Jue was only about ten years old. It was winter, and he started a fire while playing, almost burning the house down. Chen Wanrou only said a few words and let it go. However, the next day, Chen Wanrou found that Gu Jue was gone.
The entire Gu family searched all day but couldn't find him. In the evening, Gu Heng took Gu Jue home.
Gu Jue was covered in dirt and looked quite disheveled. As soon as he saw Chen Wanrou, he hugged her and started crying.
Later, the Gu family learned that Gu Heng had woken Gu Jue up late the night before and locked him in a small, dark warehouse he had rented.
Gu Jue cried out to heaven and earth in vain. He had been starving for a day and a night and could not see a ray of light. This left a deep shadow on him, and he never set fire again.
Chen Wanrou also complained to Gu Chaoyang about this, saying that Gu Heng was going too far.
Gu Chaoyang asked, "Aheng, why did you do this?"
When Gu Heng was a teenager, he replied calmly, "The fire he set almost burned my books."
He resorted to such extreme measures simply because his book was almost burned.
Chen Wanrou was both shocked and furious. "He's your brother! How could you lock him up just because of a few books?"
But Gu Chaoyang smiled and said, "You did the right thing. Of course, no one else can touch what's theirs."
Unfortunately, after all these years, Gu Jue still seems to have made little progress.
Chen Wanrou didn't dare go to the hospital. She was afraid that if she left home, Gu Jue would disappear again because of Gu Heng. Gu Heng called the family doctor to treat Chen Wanrou's wound.
As the doctor applied medicine to Chen Wanrou's forehead, Gu Heng calmly said, "I've invited Mr. Chu to dinner tomorrow night, and Dad will be back too."
Chen Wanrou quickly said, "Don't worry, I will definitely attend. My little injury is nothing, I'll be fine soon."
Since Gu Chaoyang also attended the banquet, it means that Gu Heng's dinner was not for business discussions, but perhaps just to maintain good relations between the two families and show respect. As Chu Huai's future in-law, it would be best for Chen Wanrou to attend as well.
Gu Heng didn't say anything more. He left Chen Wanrou's room and saw Gu Jue, who had been standing outside the door without moving.
Gu Jue is impulsive, but he is not a bad person. He never intended to hurt his mother. It was an accident, but he did make a mistake. When he saw Gu Heng, Gu Jue lowered his head, as if he was letting Gu Heng do whatever he wanted.
To his surprise, Gu Heng didn't even glance at him, walked past Gu Jue, and went into his own room.
It seems Gu Heng is planning to sleep at the Gu family home tonight.
Gu Jue did not feel relieved; instead, he became increasingly uneasy, and he fell into a state of bewilderment and confusion.
That night, Gu Heng sat in a chair looking at the night view outside the floor-to-ceiling window. The phone to his ear chimed with the sound of a voice call being connected. The next instant, a girl's energetic voice rang out, "Gu Heng! Did you miss me?"
"Yes, I missed you." He lowered his eyes and smiled faintly. "Xiangxiang, I wish I could have hugged you a little longer before we parted today."
Chu Xiang sensed something, and her voice became a little hesitant, "What happened? Are you unhappy?"
Gu Heng looked at the moonlight falling on the floor, where only his shadow was visible. "I just feel a little tired today."
"When you're tired, don't think about anything. Just close your eyes and take a nap. Uncle Gu, you need to know that the earth will still turn even without you. To the people in the world, you are not important at all, so you can be lazy openly and don't make yourself work so hard every day."
She added, "But of course, you are very, very important to me!"
Gu Heng had heard too many flattering words, but this was the first time he had heard someone say that his existence was not important to others at all. The girl's willful words negated all the burdens he carried in an instant.
Gu Heng's usually straight back slumped, and he leaned back lazily in his chair. His usually listless figure was now tinged with a languidness he rarely displayed. He suddenly felt a sense of relaxation he had never experienced before, and his voice was filled with laughter as he spoke to her, "Xiangxiang, what should you do if there is someone in this world who is supposed to love you, but never shows you any favoritism?"
Chu Xiang said smugly, "I already have your favoritism, so I don't care whether other people love me or not."
Her voice was full of self-satisfaction, as if winning his favor made her the proudest person in the world.
Gu Heng slightly raised his eyes, the bright moonlight reflected in his dark eyes. He captured the light and shadow of the bright moon on the night sky outside the window and chuckled softly, "Yes, I already have your favoritism, why should I care about others?"
The glass box contained candies and colorful balloons.
He has all the little things a child would have in his childhood. She is like a dream weaver, weaving back the childhood he should have forgotten, the time of laughter and play. Then the past memories gradually become blurred, simply because he has now achieved fulfillment.
Gu Heng listened patiently as Chu Xiang hummed an off-key tune on the other end of the phone. After a long while, he asked in a low voice, "Xiangxiang, what are you doing right now?"
"Take a bath," Chu Xiang muttered again. "I've been wearing sunscreen, but lately, maybe it's because I've been going out more often, I feel like I've gotten darker."
Chu Xiang said with a sigh, "And the boundary between my collarbone and my chest is really clear."
The sound of rushing water came from over there.
She muttered, "Taking a bath is so relaxing. I'll have to try it with you sometime."
Gu Heng helplessly raised his hand to his forehead, closed his eyes, and sighed softly.
That night, he had another beautiful and wonderful dream.
In the bathtub, which was spacious enough for one person but cramped for two, the sound of water overflowed the edge of the tub and splashed onto the floor in rhythm. He kissed the "black and white dividing line" on her chest again and again, and the girl's legs wrapped around his waist tightened more and more.
Gu Heng woke up in the darkness, and the burning sensation in his body took a long time to gradually dissipate. He slowly realized that tonight was another night of his own madness.
It was four in the morning, and it was still dark.
Gu Heng left the room and went to the door of another room. The door was unlocked, and he pushed it open easily. He walked straight in.
The person who had been sleeping restlessly in bed felt a chill for no reason. Driven by instinct, he opened his eyes and saw a figure standing by the bed. Startled, he jumped out of bed. "Who's there?"
Gu Heng: "It's me."
Gu Jue quickly turned on the light and saw his older brother, who looked perfectly normal. Memories of when he was ten years old suddenly flooded back. He pursed his lips slightly and asked, "How does Big Brother plan to teach me a lesson this time?"
He caused his mother's injury; he should be punished.
Gu Heng said, "You and Chu Xiang should break off your engagement."
This is not a tone of negotiation.
This was the first time Gu Jue had heard such a request from his older brother. He felt something was wrong. "Breaking off the engagement is not something I can decide. Even if I wanted to, Mom and Dad would definitely not agree."
The Chu family and the Gu family have too many vested interests, and the Gu family certainly wouldn't allow the engagement to be called off because of Gu Jue's immature ideas.
Gu Heng's gaze was calm. "I'm here to inform you only because I hope you will remain steadfast in your stance and not waver because of your elders' feigned pitifulness."
The elder he mentioned who was feigning pitifulness was none other than Chen Wanrou.
Gu Jue felt increasingly uneasy. In matters concerning his engagement with Chu Xiang, weren't all the members of the Gu family, except for himself, on his side?
If Gu Heng were to speak up, there's a high chance that Gu Jue's engagement to Chu Xiang would be canceled, given that Gu Heng is capable of anything.
Gu Jue pictured Chu Xiang in his mind. From as far back as he could remember, Chu Xiang had always followed him around like a little puppy. She wouldn't let him hold hands with other girls when he was in kindergarten, and she was even more annoying as he grew up.
If the engagement is really dissolved, his life will definitely be much more peaceful.
Gu Heng said in a calm tone, "After the engagement is dissolved, I also hope that you can draw a clear line between yourself and her and keep your distance from her."
Gu Jue's emotions were somewhat subtle and hard to describe. Perhaps it was Gu Heng's commanding tone that made him feel resentful. He suppressed this strange emotion and looked at Gu Heng, asking in return, "Chu Xiang and I haven't broken off our engagement yet. What gives you the right to tell me to sever ties with my fiancée?"
Gu Heng: "Because I've liked your fiancée for a long time."
Gu Jue thought he was hallucinating. A series of question marks flashed through his mind. When he realized that his older brother was indeed wearing a cold face that didn't look like he was joking, he was shocked and stood up from the bed. "Gu Heng, have you no shame!"
