Chapter 6 Waking Up from a Dream

They quickly had them place the two children on separate beds in the clinic.

The so-called clinic was actually just a private residence. It wasn't very big, and the converted hospital room could only barely fit three medium-sized beds.

While examining the two children, Old Chen asked questions of the two brothers, Li Guotao and Li Guoliang, who had carried them in.

"I just heard that the Lin family's house caught fire. This child is here, but where are the Lin family's parents?"

Mr. Chen was over sixty years old and lived in complete darkness. His daughter was worried and didn't let him go to check on him.

Unexpectedly, at this moment, the two Li brothers carried Lin Yu over.

"We don't know how the fire started. The house collapsed, and we don't know if the Lin couple didn't escape."

Li Guotao looked at Lin Yu lying on the bed and spoke in a low voice.

He has children of his own; how could he bear to see such a young child suffer such a fatal tragedy?

"The fire was so big, and we've been trying to put it out for so long, but we still couldn't. We don't know how those two kids managed to escape."

Li Guoliang couldn't help but speak up.

It seems that the Lin couple most likely didn't manage to escape. If Lin Yu's parents are gone, who knows what will happen to this child in the future.

The villagers who followed behind also looked on with pity.

They've been fighting the fire for so long, and they haven't seen anyone come out. It's highly likely that the Lin couple are already in grave danger.

This child has a hard life.

Lin Dongcheng and Wei Min finally managed to take her back from the mountains and raise her until she was six years old. Now that she has lost her parents, what will become of her?

After listening, Old Chen sighed. Having practiced medicine all his life, he had witnessed too many life-and-death situations. Even though he couldn't bear it, he was powerless to do anything about it.

"Both children are fine. Lin was inhaled a lot of smoke ash, but he'll recover after a while and his lungs will be cleared."

Old Chen turned his head again and looked at the crowd behind him: "Whose daughter is this? She didn't get any ash in her mouth. I can treat the burn on her arm and she can go back."

But to his surprise, the people behind him shook their heads, indicating that they didn't know whose daughter she was, where she came from, or how she and the Lin family child came out of the fire.

Li Guotao: "Let her stay here for one night. We'll ask her when she wakes up. She might be from the next village."

The loss of a child is a big deal for any family. The girl's parents will definitely come out to look for her, and judging from her clothes, she must be a child that her family values.

Although Hang Suisui's clothes were stained with soot and were a bit dirty, it was clear at a glance that they were made of good material.

They were all farmers. Although they loved their children dearly, their resources were limited. They were lucky if they could eat well, let alone have the spare money or energy to dress up their children.

When the villagers heard that the two children were alright, they all said their goodbyes. It was summer, and the village paths were difficult to walk on, so they left the clinic together.

After all that commotion, it was already late at night.

Old Chen called his daughter over to help the two children bathe and change their clothes.

Chen Xinyi brought hot water, wrung out a towel, and carefully and meticulously wiped Hang Suisui's little face, which was covered in soot.

"Dad, look at this child, he's really good-looking!"

As Old Chen was wiping Lin Yu's body, he looked up and his gaze fell on Hang Suisui's small face. The two beds were very close together, and Old Chen could see the little figure lying opposite him as soon as he looked up.

Beautiful eyebrows and eyes, thick and long eyebrows, long and curly eyelashes, thick and dense.

Her small, pert nose and rosy lips, slightly parted, were as beautiful as flower petals.

There was also a small, bright red mole between her eyebrows.

Under the warm yellow light, Hang Suisui's delicate little face looked even more exquisite.

"Wow, he's really strangely handsome!"

He'd never seen such a beautiful girl in the village before, and people from nearby villages would often ask him to come and treat their illnesses. He was quite familiar with several of those villages.

Judging from her appearance, this girl is not from the countryside.

Clearly, Chen Xinyi had also thought of this.

Chen Xinyi is thirty years old this year. He only has one daughter in his life. He has been practicing medicine for many years and is considered to be much better off than other families.

So Chen Xinyi often lived in the town since she was a child. Later, she went to study in the city and got married there. She has seen more of the world than the people in the village.

At this time of year, it was already a blessing for people to be able to live in the town. Chen Xinyi was concerned about Old Chen's advanced age and how he was running the clinic alone, so she often came back to help.

Chen Xinyi carefully wiped Hang Suisui's bandaged arm.

"I wonder whose child she is. Her parents must be so worried. She's even injured. They must be heartbroken."

She also has a child, Chen Xinyi's son, who is nine years old and is being cared for by his mother-in-law.

Even as a mother myself, I felt heartbroken just looking at this; one can only imagine how much heartache this girl's parents must feel.

I wonder if this injury on my arm will leave a scar.

The little girl was fair and delicate, with skin even smoother and more delicate than her son's; she was clearly pampered and raised with great care.

What if it leaves a scar?

After Old Chen finished wiping Lin Yu's body and changing his clothes (clothes that had been temporarily found—old clothes belonging to Chen Xinyi's son), he finally looked up.

"Go to bed early after you've finished tidying up. These two kids won't wake up until tomorrow. Ask them again when they do."

Chen Xinyi quickly tidied up Hang Suisui, but because of her arm injury and the fear of waking the child, she only carefully wiped her body and did not change her clothes.

She covered the two children with a light blanket, turned off the light, and went back to the next room to sleep.
