Chapter 28: Into the Mountains

A rainstorm washed away the farmers' hopes for the second half of the year and the following spring.

With food in hand, there's no need to worry. The people of Wangjia Village experienced this for the first time. Every household had two cellars, brimming with potatoes, sweet potatoes, pumpkins, sun-dried beans, wild vegetables, dried sweet potatoes, chestnuts gathered from the mountains, yams dug up, kudzu roots, and so on. While the granaries didn't hold much wheat, every household still had several hundred kilograms. Never before had the people of Wangjia Village stored so much food.

After the heavy rain stopped, the villagers of Wangjia Village began to clear ditches and clear blockages again. The land was now collectively owned. But the villagers of Wangjia Village were united. They all knew that if they didn't take good care of the land, they would have nothing to eat the following year. They would be the ones starving.

There is still a crop of sweet potatoes to harvest in the fields, chestnuts to pick up on the mountains, and kudzu roots to dig.

When food was in short supply everywhere and everyone was worried about food, the people of Wangjia Village had no such worries at all.

Several villages near Daqing Mountain also benefited. They discovered that Daqing Mountain was a mountain of inexhaustible treasures. Every time they entered the mountain, they never returned empty-handed.

In autumn, Daqing Mountain is particularly rich in fruit. There are many chestnut and hazelnut trees on the mountain, and autumn is the perfect time for them to ripen. Yams and kudzu root are also in season.

After the heavy rain, people from several villages near Daqingshan went out with their whole families, carrying baskets on their backs, to go up the mountain to look for food.

Normally, only hunters ventured into the depths of the Daqing Mountains. But now, the people had no other options. If they didn't head into the mountains in autumn, starvation would await them. However, the mountains were teeming with wild animals, and even a dozen young men going out together would be in great danger.

The people of Wangjia Village had sufficient food reserves and did not take the risk. The situation in other villages was different.

The leaders of Zhoujia Village were Mengzi and Zhou Xianyong.

Before Mengzi went into the mountains, he felt uneasy for some reason. To be on the safe side, he went to Old Lady Feng's house to get some hemostatic medicine.

When Mengzi and the villagers entered the mountains, Jiaojiao was leading a group of friends through the mountains. She released the monkeys in the space outside and asked them to help explore the mountains.

At this time, a little monkey was leading them and taking them to find delicious food.

Deep in the mountains, a faint roar could be heard. Jiaojiao paused, and the roar began again. Jiaojiao quickly cast a fortune, thinking it was not good.

"Dashan, follow the monkey down the mountain. There are ferocious beasts coming down from the mountain!" Jiaojiao ordered.

She held out her hand, and the monkey jumped down from the tree and lightly hooked her arm.

"Take them down the mountain, go!" Jiaojiao ordered the monkey.

After watching his friends follow the little monkey down the mountain, Jiaojiao summoned the big bird from the space.

"Bird Immortal, take me to find the people from Zhou Village. They're in danger deep in the mountains!"

The big bird spread its wings and soared into the sky.

Jiaojiao stuck to the big bird's back and looked down. After a few breaths, she found the people from Zhoujia Village.

Twenty people from Zhoujia Village had entered the mountains this time. Mengzi was leading the team. At that moment, a bloody young man lay on the ground, wailing miserably.

A huge black bear was besieged by Mengzi and others.

"Bird Immortal, what should we do?"

The big bird circled in the sky with Jiaojiao, then swooped down and pecked the black bear on the back.

The black bear let out a long cry of pain, then spread out its four hooves and ran away like the wind.

The big bird circled twice in the air, occasionally making short calls. It didn't fly away until the black bear ran into a cave and hid.

The one who got hurt was Heizi. It was his first time in the mountains, and he didn't pay attention to some of the rules Mengzi talked about.

There lived a family of three black bears nearby. Mengzi had gone into the mountains to hunt many times and knew a thing or two about this family of black bears.

This time, Heizi angered the black bear because he secretly stole its cub. Black bear cubs are very small and grow slowly. A six-month-old cub weighs only seven or eight pounds.

When the black bear father came out to look for his cubs, Heizi was almost torn to pieces by the black bear.

"Quick, stop the bleeding first!" Mengzi quickly applied the herbs on Heizi's body.

"We must get down the mountain immediately. Heizi has lost too much blood. We must rescue him in time. The smell of so much blood will attract many wild beasts in the mountains."

Mengzi gave Heizi a simple bandage, and asked Zhou Xianyong and others to make a simple stretcher to carry Heizi down the mountain.

As soon as they left, several wolves came over following the scent. They circled Heizi's bloodstains several times, howling unwillingly before leaving.

The Zhoujiacun group hurried down the mountain. Once they were down, they first went to Old Lady Feng's house. Old Lady Feng already knew what had happened on the mountain. She sorted out the herbs she would use and disinfected the needles. Everything was ready when hurried, chaotic footsteps could be heard outside.

"Grandma Feng! Hurry! Heizi was bitten by a blind bear!" Mengzi shouted to Grandma Feng as soon as he entered the yard.

Old Lady Feng took the silver needles and injected them into Heizi's body. After more than ten injections, the bleeding on Heizi's wounds stopped.

Black bear fangs and claws are full of bacteria. Old Lady Feng rinsed and disinfected Heizi again. The wounds were exposed, looking horrifying. Heizi's face was ruined.

"The injury is serious. I'll treat it urgently first. You'd better take him to the county hospital and get a tetanus shot. Then we'll see what the doctor says."

In fact, it doesn’t matter whether they get a tetanus shot or not, but with such a serious injury, they must go to the hospital. Since Old Lady Feng took the initiative to suggest it, they naturally agreed.

The injuries on Heizi's face are very serious, and it will be difficult to restore his appearance after he heals.

Before leaving, Mengzi looked into the house and didn't see Jiaojiao. The situation was urgent at the time, and others might not have seen it, but Mengzi saw it clearly.
