Chapter 29 Daqingshan

“Woof woof woof~” Half a little one?

Jiaojiao pretended to take out a handful of space fruits from her pocket and threw them into the dog's big mouth.

Dabai, chew it and swallow it.

Jiaojiao patted Dabai's head again: "Let's go find some other good treasures!"

Dabai obediently set off with his group. The children joined Jiaojiao in their treasure hunt. Dabai ran so fast that the fathers were so excited that they completely forgot they had children.

Jiaojiao once again released many pheasant eggs and bird eggs from the space. Dashan was very good at roasting eggs. A group of friends ate the fragrant roasted eggs with unknown delicious wild fruits. It was so comfortable.

When the adults came back with the prey, Jiaojiao and her friends had already eaten their fill by themselves.

Dabai, having received his reward, was incredibly enthusiastic. He led them in chasing rabbits, catching rat snakes, digging out bird nests, and even discovering a previously undiscovered pond. The pond was teeming with fish. The Wangs didn't have any fishing nets, so they made pitchforks from branches. Each of them scooped up several fish before calling it a day.

"Let's go back to the village! Let the canteen make fish for us today!"

Although the children had just eaten their fill, they cheered and followed their parents down the mountain.

The cooks at the Wangjia Village canteen were Wang Guifen and the team leader's wife. They were both skilled cooks. They cooked dozens of fish in various ways, creating over a dozen delicious dishes.

"Feed Dabai first!" Goudan's father never forgets his dog son.

The whole village rushed to feed Dabai.

"Dabai Dabai, do you remember me? I'm Dashan's father. Come, let me feed you the biggest piece of meat in my bowl!"

Now, not only Goudan fell out of favor, but all the children in the village fell out of favor.

After a few autumn rains, the weather gradually turned cooler. People began to cross from the east end of the village, rushing south to beg for a living before the freezing weather set in. The rains before the harvest meant they couldn't even survive the winter.

Aside from Wangjia Village, the canteens in the other brigades relied entirely on wild vegetables from the mountains. Every day, members would go to the brigade to eat a porridge of wild vegetables, then return home for a snack. The snacks were also gifts from the Daqing Mountains: chestnuts, yams, kudzu root, and a variety of other edibles.

Wangjia Village is particularly rich in food. Since the discovery of the large pond, the villagers have been catching a dozen or so fish every few days, mixing them with potatoes, vermicelli noodles, and other vegetables to make a stew in large pots. This dish is both filling and nutritious, making it a rare delicacy at the moment.

Across the river, in Zhoujia Village, life was also manageable. The bounty of the Daqing Mountains and the previous harvest of sweet potatoes and potatoes allowed them to scrape by. Mengzi often took his men into the mountains to hunt, and occasionally they could enjoy a meat dish. The meat was barely visible in the large pots, but the aroma was so strong that even before it was even out of the pot, a group of children were drooling.

However, after a few times, the Zhoujia Village canteen dared not cook meat dishes anymore. The reason was that the meat dishes were too delicious, and the appetites of all the villagers, young and old, were greatly stimulated, and they ate a lot in one meal.

Caijia Village and Yanjia Village are also close to the Daqing Mountain, and they barely survive by relying on the wild fruits and vegetables on the mountain.

Technician Li from the seed store often goes to Wangjia Village, using various industrial tickets to exchange for wild vegetables, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, pickles, etc. with the people of Wangjia Village.

The several brigades near Daqing Mountain weren't united. No married woman or new wife could bear to see their relatives starve to death. People in Xinjin County gradually learned that Daqing Mountain, south of the county seat, was a haven for starvation. More and more people began flocking to Daqing Mountain in search of food.

Most of the people who could come were related to some people in these villages, and no one could stop them from going up the mountain to find food. However, due to this oversight, in just two or three days, Daqing Mountain was completely changed.

It was already late autumn, and the Daqing Mountains were no longer as green as they once were. There were few wild vegetables left, but many melon vines still had a few leaves hanging on them.

The villagers around Daqing Mountain leave these vines alone, knowing that when spring arrives, they will be laden with sweet, juicy fruits, and they will continue to produce them until late autumn.

However, people from other places did not know that some of them were so hungry that they even ate soil. These melon vines were fresh, tender and juicy, and were simply a delicacy.

After a thorough search of the Daqing Mountains, no grass grew anywhere, leaving only the black earth. However, they still didn't dare to go into the deep mountains and old forests, after all, the rumor of the blind bear had already spread throughout the county.

The villagers around Daqing Mountain were inconsolable. Wangjia Village was relatively safe, with every household having a surplus of food. The other villages were struggling. The supplies they had gathered in the Daqing Mountains in the autumn wouldn't last them through the Lunar New Year. They stored what they could in the cellars, darlings like chestnuts, yams, and kudzu root, and dared not touch them, still having to go up the mountain every day to find food.

Now that even the bark of the trees in Daqingshan has been stripped, where can we find food?

The people of Wangjia Village couldn't help but lament. This situation had happened before. Even before the spring famine, not a single green leaf could be seen on the Daqing Mountains. Wild vegetables were dug up as soon as they emerged. Leaves were plucked from trees as soon as they appeared. Sometimes, during severe famines, people even peeled the bark and ate it.

"Oh, I don't know when Daqingshan will recover." The captain said with heartache while smoking his pipe and looking at Daqingshan.

"Luckily, we listened to what Old Lady Feng said and made plans early. Now the cellar is full of food. Otherwise, if we relied on Daqingshan, we would be completely finished now." The captain's wife whispered, "Now the canteen even cooks dried wild vegetable porridge every day. You know, the dried wild vegetables soaked in water are not much different from fresh ones. We in Daqingshan are really like this!"

She raised a thumbs-up and said, "It's all God's blessing! Do you think Jiaojiao is the mountain goddess photographed by God?"
