Chapter 9 Xiaoya falls into the water

On the second day of the Lunar New Year, she returned to her parents' home. Old Lady Feng's own home was her parents' home. Although Shuixiu was the Feng family's daughter-in-law, she had fled with her family years earlier, fleeing famine. Some of her family members died along the way, and others were scattered. When they arrived in Qingshan Village, Shuixiu was the only one left. Fortunately, Old Lady Feng took pity on Shuixiu and took her in. Later, Old Lady Feng's grandson, Feng Yuming, and Shuixiu fell in love, and they soon married.

Shuixiu originally thought that she could live a peaceful life from then on, but she didn't know that Feng Yuming went out one day and never came back after only two years of marriage. She has never been seen since then, and her body has not been seen since then.

In rural areas, a family without a man is likely to be bullied. Fortunately, the Feng family is headed by Old Lady Feng. She is determined and skilled in housekeeping, including delivering babies and treating illnesses. She can single-handedly support the family. Despite the family's lack of a man, the women still manage to survive.

Less than a month after Feng Yuming's disappearance, Shuixiu was discovered to be pregnant by Old Lady Feng. Pregnancy was incredibly arduous, but fortunately Old Lady Feng was experienced, and Feng Lianhua was a very open-minded person, so the two of them got along very well. The Feng family still had some food left, and Shuixiu was finally safe and sound.

So on the second day of the Lunar New Year, no one in the Feng family went to her parents' home, and no one went back to her parents' home.

On the third day of the New Year, Jiaojiao got up early in the morning to look for Xiaoya.

"Looking to play with Xiaoya?" asked Old Lady Feng.

"The little girl fell into the river!" Jiaojiao said.

Old Lady Feng's face was solemn: "Jiaojiao is saying that the little girl will fall into the river?"

Jiaojiao nodded: "Fall into the river!"

"Okay!" Old Mrs. Feng carried Jiaojiao out.

"Grandma Xiaoya, are you home?" Old Mrs. Feng stood outside the fence of Xiaoya's house and shouted inside.

"Hey, who is it? I'm here, come in!" Xiaoya's grandmother staggered out of the house. Seeing that it was Old Lady Feng and Jiaojiao, she became even more enthusiastic. "Quick, come in, why are you still standing outside!"

Old Lady Feng stepped into the yard and asked, "Where's Xiaoya? Is she home? My Jiaojiao wants to come and play with her."

"Oh, that's unfortunate. Xiaoya went to her grandma's house with her mother yesterday and didn't come back!"

Old Lady Feng stopped in her tracks. Her face was a little serious, and Grandma Xiaoya suddenly had some bad thoughts in her mind. Everyone in the village knew what happened yesterday, and Grandma Xiaoya was no exception.

"Mrs. Feng, what's going on? Do you want to call Xiaoya back?"

When Old Lady Feng heard her say this, she nodded and said, "It's safer to call them back, but remember one thing, don't go near the water! Go quickly, don't delay!"

Xiaoya's grandmother walked into the house anxiously: "Jianguo, hurry! Go to your sister-in-law's family and ask them to come back and bring Xiaoya back! Tell them Jiaojiao is looking for her. Don't go near the water! Remember?"

Jianguo is Xiaoya's uncle, about seventeen or eighteen years old, and as thin as a bamboo pole.

At this time he repeated: "Let sister-in-law bring Xiaoya back. She can't go near the water."

"Go, go! Don't play on the way, don't delay, go quickly!" Xiaoya's grandmother pushed her little son out.

"Don't go near the water! Especially Xiaoya, make sure you keep an eye on her!" Old Lady Feng warned.

Jianguo ran away, and his voice was heard on the wind: "Got it!"

Xiaoya's grandmother lived nearby, in the next village. She had gone with her cousin from her uncle's family to play in the water pool at the east end of the village. In the summer, this was where the children from the village played in the water. In the winter, the water pool froze over, turning it into a natural ice rink.

The cousin tied up Xiaoya and hid away from the adults at home, sneaking out of the house with Xiaoya. The cousins ran to the big pond at the east end of the village, where several children were already playing.

"Shuanzhu, come down quickly!" Little friend Xiaodong waved to Shuanzhu.

When Xiao Ya saw the ice surface sparkling in the sun, her eyes lit up with excitement.

"Cousin, I want to go down too!" The little girl was eager to try.

"Follow me!" Shuanzhu walked down first and stepped onto the ice. Xiaoya followed him closely and stepped onto the ice. After a few steps, she fell flat on her face.

All the friends on the ice burst into laughter.

The little girl got up, not caring about the pain, and continued to skate on the ice behind her cousin.

Jianguo was sprinting down the road. His mother had called him so urgently that morning to bring Xiaoya back, surely worried that something had happened to her. Without a moment's delay, he ran all the way to the east end of Yanzhuang Village.

There were children playing on the big puddle, and I ran over like the Jianguo style.

Children's cries were heard from the ice: "Ah! Someone fell into the river!"

Jianguo immediately slammed on the brakes and turned to run towards the big bubble.

"Who? Who fell into the water?" Jianguo took off his cotton jacket while running.

"All of you, come up and walk to where the ice is thick! Go to the village and call for help, quickly!" Jianguo gave the orders while walking carefully towards the ice.

The children on the ice were all terrified, but Xiaodong, the tied-up friend, was the smartest. He was the first to run ashore and ran towards the village: "Help! My cousin fell into the river!"

The others also crawled to the shore.

Jianguo picked up a large rock and smashed it against the ice. The ice shattered and the rock fell into the water.

Jianguo waded through the water, rushed to Xiaoya's side, and pulled her out.

The little girl choked a few times in the water. After being pulled out, she coughed violently a few times, then burst into tears.

Jianguo had just wrapped the little girl in his cotton-padded jacket when many people from the village came rushing over after hearing the news.

Xiaoya’s father and uncle ran in the front, followed by Xiaoya’s mother and other people in the village.

"Hurry, hurry, take them home, boil some water, and take a hot bath." The village chief came running over, panting, and gave the order. "Youlian, your house is nearby, so help boil a couple of pots too."
