Chapter 352 The world's most clingy person
As the sun passed zenith, the sound of Lu Jiangnian's horse hooves broke the tranquility of the western suburbs villa.
When he dismounted, his robe was still stained with dust raised along the way. He ran back under the scorching sun, with beads of sweat on his forehead.
In the side room, Yuan Wanru was directing the maids to pack their luggage.
The bright summer sun made the room warm and bright. Yuan Wanru had just had a good sleep and had just finished her meal.
She was wearing a lilac-colored skirt, the plain fabric set off her jade-like skin.
Liuyan and Liuzhi were sorting clothes while she was sorting her medicine box.
Suddenly someone came to report that Lu Jiangnian had returned.
"Why are you back so early?"
Yuan Wanru tilted her head slightly, a hint of surprise flashed across her almond-shaped eyes, and her long eyelashes cast a faint shadow under her eyes.
Liuzhi smiled and said while folding clothes: "The eldest master must be thinking about you being here."
She glanced out the window and saw Lu Jiangnian striding across the courtyard. She couldn't help but add, "You're in such a hurry, as if you'd fly away if you were a step later."
"That's right," Liu Yan took over the conversation and carefully put the dressing box into the sandalwood box, "If we talk about clinginess, if our eldest son admits to being second, I'm afraid no one in the capital dares to claim to be first."
Yuan Wanru pretended to be angry and said, "You two girls are becoming more and more unruly. I will tell your eldest master what he said later."
The two maids were immediately panicked.
Liuzhi hurriedly offered a cup of tea: "Madam, please don't do that. How dare we make up stories about the eldest young master?"
Liu Yan also quickly begged for mercy: "That's right, we were just joking."
It's fine to say this in front of the eldest young master's wife, but if the eldest young master hears it and gets angry, they will be in trouble.
Yuan Wanru laughed at them and said, "He's not a man-eating tiger. Why are you so scared of him?"
Liuzhi and Liuyan looked at each other. The eldest master naturally loved the eldest young lady very much, but it was completely different towards other people.
After a while, Lu Jiangnian's tall figure appeared at the door, carrying an air of dust and sunshine.
He looked at Yuan Wanru with burning eyes, as if everyone else in the room didn't exist.
"Why are you in such a hurry?"
Yuan Wanru came forward and suddenly frowned, "Could it be that you didn't have any meals along the way?"
Lu Jiangnian shook his head and smiled: "Forgot."
These two simple words made Yuan Wanru frown. Seeing the faint blue shadow under his eyes, she thought that he didn't sleep well last night and was so busy today, and she felt unhappy.
"You!"
Yuan Wanru poked Lu Jiangnian's solid chest with her slender jade fingers. She raised her head slightly and frowned: "I can't run away here, why are you so anxious?"
There was a hint of anger in her voice, but she couldn't hide her concern. "There are so many teahouses and bars along the way, don't you know where to find a place to fill your stomach?"
She poked him again, this time with more force: "Don't act recklessly just because you're young."
The sun was shining brightly, and her eyes sparkled. "You must have been hungry all those years at the border, and now that you've returned to the capital, you still don't know how to take care of yourself."
"When you are old and sick, I will not take care of you."
Lu Jiangnian stood straight like a green pine tree, allowing her to scold him.
He lowered his eyes to look at his wife's cheeks which were flushed with anger, and a warm feeling surged in his heart.
It's strange, my mind was in a mess when I was in the palace, and when I rode back on horseback, I was just thinking about seeing her as soon as possible, and I didn't feel hungry at all.
After hearing what she said, I really felt hungry.
"Still laughing!" Yuan Wanru caught a glimpse of the smile on his face and became even more annoyed, her eyes wide open, "Do you think I'm wrong?"
As she moved, the pair of small pearl pendants on her earlobes kept shaking and shining.
Lu Jiangnian quickly stopped smiling, but couldn't hide the tenderness in his eyes: "My wife is right, it was I who was negligent."
His voice was low and flattering, "I will remember this in the future and will not miss meals, and will never let my wife worry."
As he spoke, he quietly hooked her finger, "Even if I'm old, I won't let you suffer."
Yuan Wanru shook off his hand, and when she turned around, the hem of her skirt spun open like a flower bud.
She shouted to the outside of the door: "Come here, go to the kitchen and serve the food—" After a pause, she added, "I want some yam porridge and a dish of stir-fried seasonal vegetables."
Lu Jiangnian looked at Yuan Wanru's busy back and felt that these ordinary whispers were more touching than any sweet words.
-
The exquisite meal has been placed on the table, the yam porridge is steaming and the dishes are emitting a fragrant aroma.
Before this, she had instructed to catch some fresh fish and bring it back for Wang Min and the others to taste.
Also, some local specialties from the villa were taken away.
"You eat by yourself, I'll go out and take a look."
Yuan Wanru was about to stand up, and just as the hem of her skirt brushed the edge of the stool, her wrist was firmly grasped by a big, warm hand.
"Stay with me."
Lu Jiangnian's voice was low, and his fingertips gently stroked her wrist. The touch made Yuan Wanru's ears warm.
Upon seeing this, Liu Yan hurriedly lowered his head and left, not forgetting to gently close the carved wooden door before leaving, and said, "The eldest young master is the clingiest person in the world."
Yuan Wanru glared at Lu Jiangnian in embarrassment and annoyance: "What are you doing? I'm still full, do I have to sit here and watch you eat?"
Instead of letting go, Lu Jiangnian held her wrist even tighter.
He raised his head and said, "I want my wife to accompany me, otherwise I won't be able to enjoy the food."
"You," Yuan Wanru said, both angry and amused, tapping his forehead with her fingertips, "How dare you say such things, like a three-year-old child."
Lu Jiangnian's eyes were deep: "There must be someone watching outside, my lady, can you accompany me?"
Yuan Wanru looked into his eyes and realized that something was wrong with his mood.
"What's wrong?"
"What happened in the palace?"
Yuan Wanru's mind changed and her tone softened.
She sat down again and reached out to serve him a bowl of yam porridge with gentle movements.
"Okay, I'll be here. You eat first, and then we'll talk after you finish eating."
Lu Jiangnian also let her go and concentrated on eating.
The room was very quiet, with only the clatter of dishes and chopsticks and the occasional chirping of birds outside the window.
Lu Jiangnian put down the porcelain bowl in his hand, he looked up at Yuan Wanru, and seeing her eyes full of concern, he couldn't help but pull the corners of his mouth, revealing a slightly bitter smile.
"It's nothing," he said, his fingers stroking the edge of the bowl unconsciously, "I just suddenly remembered some old things this morning and I felt unhappy."
Yuan Wanru sat quietly, her slender fingers folded on her knees, waiting patiently for him to continue.
"My father was promoted by the emperor."
Lu Jiangnian's voice was low, his eyes fixed on the distance, "He always said that our Lu family must remember the emperor's kindness, and we will never be able to repay him even if we sacrifice our lives."
At this point, a hint of self-mockery appeared on his lips, "That's why I became the prince's companion."
A breeze came in through the window, gently ruffling the loose hair on Yuan Wanru's forehead.
She still didn't interrupt him, but her eyes became softer.
"I used to think that I would be a loyal minister to the emperor, just like my father said."
Lu Jiangnian's fingers tightened slightly, his knuckles turning white, "But now..."
He paused, and his voice became lighter, "I find that being a pure minister is difficult."
Yuan Wanru gently held his hand and felt the warmth of his palm.
Lu Jiangnian held her hand and continued, "The emperor has been very kind to me. Madam, if one day the emperor and the prince are on opposite sides, should I be loyal to the emperor or the prince?"
The last sentence was spoken so softly that it almost disappeared into the air.
The room fell silent for a moment, leaving only the intertwined breathing of the two people.
