Chapter 22 Draft (9)

Xiuning silently complained in her heart, while keeping her ears perked up to listen to what the Empress Dowager was saying.

"I summoned you here today simply because it is your first time away from home. I want to have a brief chat with you and talk about everyday things. There's no need to be too nervous."

Well, the Empress Dowager's voice sounded gentle and not as serious as I had imagined, but even though she said some polite things, it was still hard not to be nervous.

At least they didn't dare to make any rash moves, and even if they replied "yes" as instructed, their bodies remained tense.

Perhaps sensing the tension of the three, the Empress Dowager remained silent, and the four of them sat awkwardly in the main hall.

The atmosphere in the main hall gradually became oppressive. The system, while chatting with Xiu Ning, described the situation of Dong E Jing Xin and Shu Mu Lu Yi Xuan.

Well, compared to the relatively calm Shu Mulu Yixuan, Dong E Jingxin seemed much more restless.

The lighting in the main hall of Cining Palace was particularly good, and Dong E Jingxin was made to look radiant from head to toe, making it hard for her not to attract attention.

Just when the three were about to give up, there was another tremor outside the door, and other people came in.

Xiuning quickly stood up, turned her head and instantly saw who it was: a Mongol bannerwoman from Xianfu Palace.

A Mongolian military flag?!

Dong E Jingxin looked at Shu Mu Lu Yi Xuan beside her in astonishment. Wasn't it said that the Empress Dowager had not summoned the Mongol banner girls? How did things change?

Shu Mulu Yixuan was clearly not expected to see this turn of events. She awkwardly clenched the handkerchief in her hand, her eyes fixed on the empty ground.

"Alright, you're all here. Please have a seat."

"yes"

With the addition of the Mongol bannermen, the once empty hall instantly became lively, its tranquility swept away and replaced by a fiery passion.

Xiuning finally found an opportunity to observe the layout of the main hall out of the corner of her eye.

Well, how should I put it? It wasn't as luxurious as Xiuning had imagined; in fact, some of the porcelain ornaments were rather simple.

Is this what it means to return to simplicity?

Having attained the most important power and become one of the most honored women in the harem, she remained calm and composed.

"I am getting old and don't have much to do these days. I summoned you all here today to find out how you have been doing in the palace these past few days. If there is anything you are unhappy about, you can tell the servants."

They are all people I specially selected to take care of you. Please don't neglect yourselves in anything.

The Empress Dowager smiled and spoke in a conversation that was mostly casual and familiar, like a kind patriarch caring for a younger generation who had traveled far from home.

However, these words are just for show. They made it clear that the palace maids serving them were specially selected, so why did they bother to offend them? They deserved to be rejected.
