Inside the conference room on the top floor of Roton's headquarters, everyone was looking down at the documents in their hands, and apart from the rustling sound of turning the pages, no one spoke.
"Smack!"
One of the shareholders, sitting near the front, suddenly slammed the documents in his hand onto the table.
"Sheffield, it's Sheffield again!"
His face flushed red, and he was furious.
"Last time, because of the Shenglun International incident, our Luo Dun already angered Nanmei Electric Appliances, and now we've actually signed such a lawsuit that we can't breach!"
“I’ve said it before, people from Z country are ungrateful. If you insist on promoting her to partner, fine, we’ll reluctantly let her do it for the sake of her performance.”
He was so angry that he slammed his fist on the table.
"But you put her in charge of the Atlantic region's business, and now she's caused one mess after another for our Law Offices. Who's going to take responsibility for this?"
He turned his gaze to Joyce and asked with a cold laugh.
"Joe, are you going to take responsibility?"
Joyce shrugged: "Saul, say what you will, but I don't think Sheffield did anything wrong!"
"Bullshit!"
Thor jumped up in anger, causing the chair behind him to scrape loudly.
“Joyce, you’re lying through your teeth. I don’t believe you’re unaware of Congress’s recent attitude toward Z Country. Last time, because of the South American Electrics incident, Old Betty specifically mentioned Rodon in Congress, and this time it’s another lawsuit against the Cecida Group!”
"Oh, so what?"
Joyce didn't care at all that Thor was so angry his face turned red.
He shrugged, looking bored.
“Saul, our Law Offices is a business of making money, not a charity that listens to those idiots in Congress.”
"Are you suggesting that Sheffield give up such a lucrative opportunity to appease those idiots in Congress?"
"We'll talk about that later!"
His gaze toward Saul was mocking.
"Saul, you don't think we don't know you have a lot of Cecida stock!"
"Let me give you a piece of advice: before Sheffield files a lawsuit, you'd better hurry up and get rid of your stocks!"
"Joyce!"
Thor's little scheme was exposed by Joyce in front of everyone, leaving him feeling ashamed and indignant.
Realizing he was being led by the nose by Joyce again, he calmed himself down for a moment and continued.
"How can you be so sure that your precious apprentice, Xie Fei, will definitely win this lawsuit?"
"Yeah, since the outcome is unknown, what are you yelling about?"
"Or do you also believe that as long as Sheffield takes on a lawsuit, she generally won't fail?"
Joyce pursed her lips, unable to hide the smile on her face.
"Joyce, you wish!"
Thor glared at him.
"Alright, everyone be quiet for a moment!"
Hunter tapped the table; his expression was unusually serious, a rare sight for the usually easygoing man.
“Joyce, Saul is right about one thing: Congress has been taking a very tough stance on Z country lately. If our law firm continues to stand against Congress, it might not be good. You know, even members of Congress, including Bolt, will have their opinions!”
Bolt is not only a member of Congress, but also one of Rodton's largest shareholders, and today's extraordinary shareholders' meeting was convened with his private authorization!
However, he is currently still in Afghanistan and cannot return immediately, so he could only authorize his lawyer to attend this extraordinary shareholders' meeting.
Even Old Hunter's stance has begun to change, which shows how tense relations between the two countries have been recently. Joyce's expression gradually turned cold, but his attitude remained tough.
"Hunter, the litigation fees Sheffield signed amount to the total revenue of the Atlantic region for Rodton Law Firm last year. I don't believe you profit-driven shareholders don't know that!"
"What is the purpose of this extraordinary shareholders' meeting? Do I need to explain it clearly? Is it just that you want to make money but don't want to take the blame, and then try to shift the blame to Xie Fei when things get out of control?"
Hunter's cheeks flushed slightly at Joyce's words, but he quickly recovered.
"Joyce, you're overthinking it!"
"Hmph, am I overthinking things? Or are you asking for too much?"
Joyce showed no regard for Hunter's feelings and continued to speak her mind.
Given his current status in the legal profession, he doesn't need to be subservient to anyone, nor is he afraid of the Law Offices of Rodton pulling strings behind the scenes.
He already possessed money and status; now he simply lived and worked as he pleased.
Helping Sheffield stemmed from his admiration for the intelligence and resilience of this student from China, and also as a way of compensating for his inability to uphold his principles in his youth.
……………………
Because of Joyce's tough stance, the shareholders' meeting naturally came to nothing.
Back in his office, Joyce, who had been so carefree just moments before, gradually became serious.
He clearly sensed the change in the shareholders' attitude towards Sheffield, and if things continued to develop this way, Rodton might abandon Sheffield if Congress made any verbal criticisms!
He found it hard to accept that such a talented student would leave the law firm of Rhodes.
It seems I need to give Sheffield a heads-up, but how should I bring it up?
Joyce was in a bit of a dilemma.
He is not only a senior partner at Rodton Law Firm, but also Sheffield's doctoral advisor at Harvard.
Is he going to tell his students that the standards he taught them about being a lawyer should now include political options?
However, he then thought of Sheffield's cunning; if things really came to a head, Sheffield would certainly not let Rodton Law Firm have its way.
