Chapter 8 "Sir, are you hungry too? I can share a bite with you."

Lin Dao stared intently at the boy in front of him for several seconds, then suddenly ordered the guards outside in a deep voice, "Cheng Cheng, come in and take him out."

Cheng Cheng was also quite surprised to hear what Bretta had just said, and then belatedly remembered that the colonel had named a boy he had rescued from the Easton laboratory. Because the boy had never spoken since being rescued, the colonel had given him a name when they needed to register him and make temporary ID cards.

Upon hearing the order, he immediately came in and hurriedly brought the boy out. Fortunately, it seemed that Bryta had only seen the colonel wearing a protective helmet and had not recognized him.

After Blaita came out, Cheng Cheng handed him back the drink box hanging around his neck, and then walked downstairs to the boxing ring.

When Cheng Cheng returned and entered the room, Lin Dao was still reviewing Bretta's information. However, with the Security Department's limited access, they could only see a superficial portion.

After going downstairs, Britta glanced back upstairs with lingering fear. He had been subjected to frequent testing and interrogation today, which made him very uneasy. So, at the end, he consciously mentioned Colonel Klindall's name, hoping to add some credibility to his human identity.

Six months ago, after being mistaken for a human and rescued from the laboratory, he was sent to a base called Mix. Initially, having just become human, he couldn't understand human language at all. After a series of tests and assessments, he was determined to have been an experimental subject since birth, never having been exposed to or learned the laws of human society or any basic common sense.

"This young man has been tested and there are no problems. He is of Germanic descent, has extremely high intelligence, and his genetic testing shows he is SSS-level (superior). It's a pity he hasn't received any education whatsoever. I think we can apply for at least six months of basic common sense education and safety and living support to help him adapt to base life as soon as possible and become self-reliant through work," the staff member in charge of testing at Mix Base said to the renowned young officer.

Upon hearing this, the handsome man standing by the window, dressed like a military officer, said calmly, "Do as you say."

"By the way, this little guy doesn't even have a name yet. Should I give him one?"

“Breta Easton,” the man interrupted him, recalling a string of English words that flashed through his memory.

"Huh? What?"

“This is his name.” After saying this, the man in military uniform turned around, picked up the military cap on the table, put it on with his head slightly lowered, and left in his military boots, leaving behind the words, “If the application is not approved, all the fees will be deducted from my account.”

Lin Dao vaguely recalled this memory that he had almost forgotten. After leading his team to destroy the Easton Laboratory, he arranged for the eleven people he found who had been forced to participate in the experiment to be transported by tanker to the Mix Base, which was willing to accept them. There was a delay on the way, and when he arrived at the Mix Base, he only briefly learned about the situation of these rescued people before leaving again to carry out the next more arduous mission.

Just a few months later, he unfortunately encountered danger and perished in the alien tide at the Ashan base.

The blond-haired boy she had only caught a fleeting glimpse of in the lab now vaguely remembered her first impression.

Even though he had personally rescued the other person from the Easton laboratory, Lin Dao did not completely trust him or rule out any suspicion.

An hour earlier, using the identity ID of the person in charge of the investigation, he retrieved all existing data on Blaita, a resident of the East Fourth District of the Mixed Base. This included data from his initial full-body examination and dangerous isolation observation upon entering the Mixed Base, as well as a series of subsequent genetic tests and assessments.

Lin Dao spent a long time flipping through the data and documents.

"What? You're still fixated on that kid?" Xiang You walked up behind Lin Dao, who was looking at data in front of the virtual screen, and teased, "I heard from Cheng Cheng that you rescued this kid from the Easton Lab, and you even named him. No wonder he's called 'Breta'."

Lin Dao offered no explanation for the misunderstanding, focusing instead on reviewing the data on Bretta from the past six months at the Mix base.

A boy who was judged to have been used as an experimental subject in a laboratory since birth cannot speak human language, does not understand any social common sense or rules, and is even indifferent to human emotions.

The only two things that could stir his emotions were the fear of death and the craving for food.

Ultimately, he only had the primal instinct to live.

Xiang You glanced at it casually, and with his professional sensitivity honed over many years of research in biology and alien species, he became quite curious.

“I was just marveling at how pure this child is. In this era of great catastrophe, a child this pure is a treasure,” Xiang You said, raising an eyebrow.

Lin Dao sensed something unusual, but without shifting his gaze, he slightly turned his head and asked, "What do you mean?"

Xiang You reached out and pulled up Bretta's full-body test report, pointing to some data and saying to him, "Aside from his blank emotional perception, his body is still too clean."

"Apart from the upper echelons of the major bases and those living on the Mix base, who can guarantee that the food and water they consume are completely free of impurities? Plants and animals may become mutated due to infection, and even if humans hide inside the base or in underground shelters, they will more or less be contaminated by some pollutants or be affected by some radiation."

As Xiang You spoke, he reached out and pushed up his silk-rimmed glasses, and continued, "But this Britta, he seems to have never been exposed to any impurities, he is unbelievably clean."

How could Lin Dao not have thought of these things?

If someone had been used as a test subject since childhood, they would have been injected with various drugs in the laboratory, harboring all sorts of physiological crises, and could never be in the physical state that Bretta is in now.

Unless, he wasn't an experiment in Easton Labs at all.

So who exactly is he?

What is the purpose of infiltrating the laboratory disguised as someone captured for experiments?

He and Xiang You thought of something at almost the same time.

The Easton Experiment Subject, for whom a high bounty has been offered on the dark web worldwide.

Lin Dao thought again of the unidentified corrosive liquid and the mysterious man in the gray tweed coat who had suddenly disappeared from the boxing ring earlier that day. And after the mysterious man vanished, Bretta happened to appear there.

Lin Dao left Xiang You's place in deep thought. He retrieved the information of all eleven people, including Bryta and the others who had been rescued, copied it, and took it with him.

Seeing this, Xiang You couldn't help but sigh, "Your dark circles are so heavy, and you're still staying up late."

Lin Dao ignored his sarcasm.

Bretta's "Alien Cola" sold well today, earning her high praise from Boss Bear and ten contribution points. She also got a free roasted potato in the afternoon.

The revelry in the dungeon knows no day or night. After 10 p.m., Blaita took a break from the others, took the elevator up to the ground floor, and headed towards his place in the East Fourth District.

The residential area in the sixteenth district of the base is almost deserted at night. Everyone is used to going back to their houses early to rest. After all, many mutated creatures are more active at night, and no one can be sure that the base's defenses are foolproof and that no alien species will invade.

In contrast, the slums are a bit more lively, with some hidden little businesses always opening at night.

The roasted potatoes from the afternoon had long been digested. Blatta quickened her pace and, as she passed through the slums, found a window in a low shack area emitting the aroma of food. She peeked inside and said, "Could I have a roasted corn, please?"

There were also some processed flatbreads and tortillas in the oven. But the more processed foods were more expensive.

During times of food scarcity, the most primitive cooking methods became the norm.

Holding a piping hot roasted corn cob that was only half-eaten, Bryta warmed it in both hands and eagerly bent down to take a bite. Perhaps it had been roasted for too long, or perhaps the corn had been picked a long time ago and was already hard; in any case, it was a bit hard and chewy.

But it still smelled delicious. Britta wasn't picky about food, and she ate contentedly as she walked home.

Fortunately, he left the slum quickly enough and avoided being robbed.

When he got to the elevator in the East Fourth District, he munched on corn as he went upstairs. After getting out of the elevator, he continued munching on corn as he passed the entrance of 2701 and got to his own door.

Lin Dao, who was reviewing documents inside the house, had already sensed the increasingly close vibration of teeth grinding against a corncob as soon as Bletta entered his perception range.

Finally, just a few meters away outside the door, the constant sensation was unbearable, as if someone were drilling into his heart with an electric drill.

"Bang—" The door to 2701 was opened.

Hearing the voice, Bryta turned around while munching on a corncob and mumbled, "Good evening, sir..." His indistinct, childlike voice immediately stopped when he saw the expression on the man's face.

Because at that moment, the man in the black sweater was looking down at him, his always-downturned eyelids drooping listlessly, and his face full of displeasure.

Bretta quickly stood at attention, took the corncob out of her mouth, and carefully offered a bit of it, asking, "Sir, are you hungry too? May I share a bite with you?"

Lin Dao didn't know why he suddenly opened the door and stood there. Now, looking at the thing that was being handed to him, which was burnt black and covered with some unknown transparent liquid, his face darkened even more.

He replied stiffly and awkwardly, "I'm not hungry."

"Oh!" Bleta quickly retrieved the food and placed it in front of her to protect it.

He thought to himself, although the man smelled delicious, he would still prefer corn on the cob; the man wasn't picky about food.

“Is there anything else, sir? I need to enter the access code,” Britta politely reminded him.

"..."

Lin Dao suddenly thought of something, glanced lazily at Blaita, and said casually, "Tell that little guy who said he would never do it again during the day to behave himself tonight."

Then, satisfied to see the child's face turn pale with fright, he closed the door.

Bretta was terrified. He never dared to be so hungry that he would climb over the rooftop mezzanine to sneak a whiff of his master's scent to satisfy his craving again...
