Chapter 53 Don’t Eat Birds… They Stink…

This building is specially used by inspectors at the base to store some confidential documents. It is not large, but it is extremely private and has few windows.

As I entered the building, the light suddenly dimmed, as if it was evening.

Without power, the corridor was dark, eerie and cold, with several corpses lying there that had been gnawed beyond recognition.

The air was filled with the strange smell of rotting flesh and dried blood mixed with dust.

Jiang Zhaosu raised his little face, sniffed, and whispered to Qi Xing, "No, no one."

There are no living people in this building anymore.

"Are there zombies?"

"Less than ten."

Jiang Zhaosu replied.

Qi Xing nodded, but did not tell this information to Bai Xiaoling, who was still looking around nervously behind him.

He went straight up to the second floor, entered an archive room, and put Jiang Zhaosu down from his arms: "You go and play, I need to look at something here. We'll meet at the stairs later."

Of course, he came here not out of kindness to help Bai Xiaoling find her brother, but to check the personnel files of the survivors at Hurricane Base to see if Qi Tong's name was on them.

When Qi Xing was doing something, Jiang Zhaosu usually couldn't help much. He either just watched blankly or played by himself.

Jiang Zhaosu was accustomed to this arrangement. He responded with an "Oh!" and was about to walk towards the door.

Bai Xiaoling, who was following behind them, was confused when she saw that they were about to separate. "Huh? Huh?"

"Aren't you going to help me find Bai Xiaoqing?" Bai Xiaoling asked hurriedly.

Qi Xing took out a document from the filing cabinet with a flashlight and replied coldly, "That's your business. Find it yourself."

This is his normal attitude towards outsiders.

Jiang Zhaosu was blocked at the door by Bai Xiaoling. He raised his hand and pushed her: "Follow me."

It would be boring for her to play alone, so she might as well bring Bai Xiaoling along.

After spending the past two days together, Bai Xiaoling has realized that Qi Xing is a human being, but this little girl named Fugui is actually a man-eating zombie.

But Qi Xing's temper was too unpredictable, and he looked eerie.

Compared to him, Jiang Zhaosu is easier to get along with.

Bai Xiaoling hesitated for a moment, then followed Jiang Zhaosu out of the archive room with a crowbar in hand.

Jiang Zhaosu pushed open the doors of each room one by one, like he was on an expedition, to see what was inside.

Most rooms resemble ordinary offices, with a few computers and lots of paper files.

There are also individual rooms with many cages, some of which contain the rotting corpses of small animals.

These rooms should be the offices of the "inspectors" mentioned by Qi Xing, and the cages contain the "monitoring eyes" they raise.

These animals are very interesting.

Their bodies have been modified by the "Inspector" ability and are slightly different from ordinary animals, but they are not mutants.

Jiang Zhaosu took out a dead pigeon from the cage, put it to his nose and sniffed it for a long time, and finally swallowed the pigeon under Bai Xiaoling's creepy gaze.

Sure enough, the pigeon tasted similar to that of the mutant and was better than ordinary meat.

But because of its small body, it can obtain very little energy.

Jiang Zhaosu only ate one to try it out and then lost interest in eating any more.

You also have to spit out feathers and chew bones, which is very troublesome.

Bai Xiaoling saw her eating the pigeon and her face turned pale. She looked like she wanted to vomit, but she forced herself to hold it back. She patted her chest and comforted herself, "Bai Xiaoqing used a crow, not a pigeon. He must not be dead yet."

Seeing that the silly girl was still in the dark, Jiang Zhaosu kindly told Bai Xiaoling: "There is no one alive here except us."

This sentence was like a trigger for some keyword. Bai Xiaoling's eyes immediately widened, glaring at her angrily, and she sternly said, "Impossible!"

Facing Jiang Zhaosu's dark eyes that didn't resemble those of a normal person, Bai Xiaoling remembered the terrifying identity of the little girl in front of her. She shuddered and softened her tone: "Bai Xiaoqing, he's not here... He must be somewhere else..."

Bai Xiaoling is wise in selecting people.

Jiang Zhaosu's temper was indeed better than Qi Xing's. At least he didn't get angry at her sudden yelling. He just tilted his head and said, "Maybe?"

Her calm attitude made Bai Xiaoling feel inexplicably annoyed.

Although Jiang Zhaosu and his men had looted her house, after seeing the group of robbers yesterday, Bai Xiaoling had to agree with Qi Xing's words.

The end of the world is unreasonable. Strength is the only thing that matters, and the winner is respected.

At least they didn't kill her and actually brought her to Hurricane Base to find Bai Xiaoqing.

If she had relied on herself, she would have died along the way.

Bai Xiaoling thought about it, reached into his pocket and fumbled for a while, then handed it to Jiang Zhaosu: "This is for you."

Jiang Zhaosu opened his hands and saw Bai Xiaoling placing several beautifully wrapped chocolates in his palms.

Bai Xiaoling opened her mouth, but seemed to find it difficult to speak. She bit her lip and said to her, "This is the chocolate that Bai Xiaoqing asked someone to bring me from Europe. Eat this if you're hungry. Don't eat... those birds. They're all stinky..."

Zombies' sense of taste is different from that of humans. After several mutations, Jiang Zhaosu's body has become accustomed to eating these and does not taste the smell of rotten meat.

But she didn't explain this to Bai Xiaoling.

Jiang Zhaosu was still looking down at the chocolate in his hand.

These chocolates were wrapped tightly, with foreign language writing on the packaging, and looked very high-end. They were high-end snacks that Jiang Zhaosu had never tasted before he traveled through time.

Jiang Zhaosu has always been a mother whoever feeds her.

She likes whoever gives her good things.

She raised her head and smiled happily at Bai Xiaoling.

She actually didn't hate Bai Xiaoling that much, she just didn't like what Bai Xiaoling yelled in the apartment.

Something like she was the unluckiest person in the world and she didn't want to live anymore.

Even a rat like her, who can only live in the basement when alive and has to lie on the ground and gnaw on corpses when dead, is still trying hard to survive.

In her opinion, it was a mockery to them that the extremely happy Bai Xiaoling would give up her life so easily after suffering a little hardship.

However, after spending the past two days with Bai Xiaoling, Jiang Zhaosu discovered that Bai Xiaoling was just talking, and her actual desire to survive was still very strong.

Just like she said she had never killed a chicken, but they asked her to cut up the body. Didn't she also cry and cut it up in order to survive?

People who learn painting have steady hands and can slice meat quite neatly.

When Bai Xiaoling saw her smile, she also smiled stiffly.

Jiang Zhaosu counted and found that Bai Xiaoling gave her four chocolates in total.

She took off a piece and put it in her mouth, and put the rest in her pocket.

Mmm, the smell of dirt...

Her sense of taste had indeed changed.

But even though it tasted earthy, Jiang Zhaosu couldn't bear to spit it out.

She was savoring the earthy-flavored chocolate in her mouth when she suddenly smelled something new in the air.

It's the breath of a mutant.
