Chapter 01

Chapter 01

August 3035... It was probably August, Xue Ling couldn't remember the time.

But it doesn’t matter, there’s no point in keeping track of time now.

The weather this year was unusually hot. The sun had been shining brightly for more than half a month without a drop of rain. Xue Ling found a place to lie down under the dense shade of a tree. The old rocking chair, which had been exposed to the wind and sun for three years, creaked under her weight.

Xue Ling no longer needed to sleep, and lying here dozing off was just a way to kill time.

She narrowed her eyes and stared blankly at the figure swaying in the distance.

This used to be a park. Three years ago, there would have been many elderly people and children walking here every day.

It used to be noisy here with the old people chatting and the children screaming, but now it was very quiet.

The hunchbacked old men staggered, the short children paused after every step, and the few young people staggered, their movements stiff and slow.

They are all zombies. When they don't sense the presence of living people, they will just wander around aimlessly - like the red-named NPC in an online game whose combat mechanism has not been triggered.

Xue Ling turned over stiffly, and seemed to hear the creaking sound of his bones, just like the old rocking chair under him.

There was no way. After all, she was also a zombie now. Her body was stiff and many of her movements were extremely awkward, just like her fellow zombies wandering not far away.

She leaned over and began to stare at the bark of the old tree next to her. There was an ant crawling on the cracked bark of the camphor tree. She stared at the ant as it climbed higher and higher, and disappeared on a high branch, and could no longer be seen.

Life as a zombie is so monotonous and boring. Xue Ling can just sit there in a daze for the whole day. She has been living this kind of life for a long time.

I don't know how long it will take, maybe I have to wait until she rots?

This is a bit difficult. The zombies are getting drier and drier, and their skin is getting tougher and tougher. Maybe they will become bronze skin and iron bones in the future. She is just aiming for a long life.

Live for twenty-two years and die for seventy-eight years, how can that not be considered a long life of a hundred years?

Today will probably be another peaceful day with nothing happening. Xue Ling sighed inwardly as she watched the orange sunset gradually spread across the horizon.

Some things just can't be talked about. Just when I was thinking about them, there was a sudden sound like thunder in the distance.

This was a big deal and immediately attracted the attention of all the wandering zombies.

The zombies would gather towards the place where the sound came from. Xue Ling saw that her fellow zombies changed their previous slowness and rushed towards the direction of the sound, just like students who heard the dinner time.

The zombies in the small park soon ran away howling, but Xue Ling still lay in her rocking chair indifferently.

Only humans can make such a commotion. As a strange zombie that still retains human rationality, Xue Ling can never accept cannibalism. So she won't join in the excitement.

Anxi City is not big, and there is nothing special about it. After the zombie outbreak, the number of living people here has become fewer and fewer. Xue Ling came here about a year ago, and she has only seen living people a few times in this area in this year.

This time there was such a big commotion, it didn't seem like there were only one or two people coming, and no one knew who they were or what they were doing.

————

As the sun set, a convoy of trains drove into Anxi City.

The zombies here were attracted by the bomb device they placed on the other side. The convoy moved forward smoothly, shooting and killing a few scattered zombies nearby, and soon arrived at a place suitable for setting up camp.

In the abandoned car park, the people in the team were skilled in clearing away dangerous and obstructed old cars, and set up some obstacles to block the zombies.

Several headlights were placed next to the car, and someone set up a stove to boil water, and soon the aroma of food wafted out.

Not long after, a modified car with a rusty appearance drove up the road. Seeing that it was a familiar car, the people in the camp quickly opened the large iron gate and the barriers behind it to let the car in.

The car stopped and several people got out.

"Brother Mi, did you guys have success in luring the zombies to the Southeast Square?"

"We are all experienced. There is no chance of any accident."

"Xiaoying, this is the first time you and Brother Mi are going to lure a group of zombies together. Were you scared to death? Haha!"

"You're the one who's scared to death! I'm not that useless!"

"Okay, okay, the soup is ready, let's eat!"

There were more than twenty people in the camp, and it was lively and noisy. Dai Ying hugged the big golden retriever that came to greet her and rubbed its head affectionately.

Dai Ying squeezed into the crowd and scooped two bowls of thick soup, stuffed two cans into his pocket, then squeezed out of the crowd again, taking his big dog to look for his cousin.

There was a person sitting on the roof of the car on the outermost ventilated area.

"Cousin, why are you sitting here alone again? Why don't you go over there and join everyone else?"

"It's too noisy." Wen Jiuze, who was sitting on the roof of the car, said lazily.

He is a tall man with broad shoulders and a narrow waist. A simple black T-shirt becomes tight on him, showing his chest muscles and making him look very powerful.

It's just that his hair was too long, with messy ends brushing his shoulders, and he didn't take care of it. He sat there with his back hunched and lazily, looking a little decadent.

When Dai Ying was just a 19-year-old teenager, he envied his cousin's physique every time he saw it, and he also wanted to grow up like him.

Today he went out with his cousin Migo to do the job of attracting zombies and was almost caught by a zombie. His cousin grabbed him back to the car with one hand and cut the zombie's neck with his other hand.

The zombies nowadays are not like the ones at the beginning. Their necks are so hard that my cousin can cut them open with one knife. It's really deadly.

Wen Jiuze was also eating, holding a compressed biscuit in one hand to replenish his energy, and playing with the short knife for cutting zombies in the other hand.

"Cousin, don't eat this. Come, there's soup and canned food here!" Dai Ying also climbed onto the roof of the car and offered hot soup and her own canned food in a flattering manner.

Wen Jiuze looked at him with a smile and admired his little eyes. He felt that he was similar to the big golden retriever next to him, and his tail was about to wag.

"Cousin, will you come with us next?" Dai Ying asked while holding the soup. "You said you wanted to visit Qiu Zhuang. We can go with you and then you can come back to the camp with us."

Wen Jiuze did not agree: "No need."

Dai Ying still wants to try harder, as it is very rare to meet relatives again after the end of the world.

At the beginning of the apocalypse, the world was in chaos and all transportation networks were paralyzed. They hadn't been able to contact their cousin for a long time, and only met him unexpectedly two months ago.

Because of him, my cousin temporarily followed their convoy.

But my cousin also said that he would not follow them forever, and after visiting the Wen family’s hometown, Qiu Zhuang, they would go their separate ways.

"Cousin, since you don't have any destination, why don't you come with me? It's so nice to be together and we can help each other..."

Wen Jiuze just let him talk, biting the compressed biscuit and playing with the dagger without any extra reaction.

Dai Ying talked for a long time but to no avail, and drank his soup with a sigh.

His cousin looks very casual and doesn't care about anything. Although he always smiles, he is actually not approachable at all.

He had been with the team for two months. He was good-looking and a good fighter, so many people in the team liked him, but no one could really get close to him.

"Cousin, where do you want to go next?"

"have no idea."

"Cousin, are you traveling all this time?"

"no."

"Then why are you running around? It's so dangerous outside now."

"You talk too much. Go and have a rest after you finish eating... Let me play with your dog."

"Oh, Puff, come up and play with your cousin!"

The big golden retriever obediently jumped onto the hood of the car, swung its tail and rested its head on Wen Jiuze's bent knees.

Dai Ying started raising this dog before the end of the world, and has been raising it for several years.

He was holding two empty soup bowls and saw his cousin grabbing Puff's chin and scratching it, as if he liked it very much. Suddenly he remembered something.

"Cousin, do you remember that when you were studying in college in Yu City about four years ago, you often walked my dog for a while."

Wen Jiuze paused in his dog-chasing move and smiled nonchalantly, "Yes."

It was getting darker and darker, and the camp became quiet.

Slowly, a ray of morning light appeared on the horizon, and a new day arrived.

"Today is August 26, 3035, Monday. The surface temperature is 37° and the weather is sunny."

The car radio made an announcement.

The convoy set out again and drove out of the camp where they had rested for the night.

Xue Ling did not stay in the park today. The recliner she often lay on was finally broken by her this morning.

She thought this was a bad omen and decided to go out and find a recliner.

The life of a zombie is so boring and plain.

She could spend a whole day looking for a recliner she liked, and if it was far away, it might take another day to drag the chair back.

As luck would have it, just as she had found a suitable recliner in a store with its door open on the street, she heard the sound of a car outside.

Several cars drove onto this street. They couldn't drive fast because there were some abandoned cars blocking the street. They couldn't drive through the street unimpeded and had to get off to tow their cars.

The movement attracted the wandering zombies nearby. Xue Ling saw a few zombies running excitedly outside the glass door, and then a dozen more ran past.

Outside, the zombies' roars were mixed with human voices.

Someone said: "It will take several trips to move the machines back, so it is better to clean up the zombies on this street."

"Okay, you lead the others to lure the zombies, and Brother Wen will stay in the car to provide support, okay?"

Xue Ling still had one hand on the recliner that she had finally found, and looked around the messy storefront.

There was no place to hide. The door to the back room was locked. If it was true as those people outside said, that they wanted to clean up all the zombies on this street, she would probably be in trouble if she stayed here.

Forget it, let’s leave here first and come back to move the rocking chair in a few days.

She staggered out the door, ready to retreat.

Unfortunately, a large number of zombies rushed to the street corner, and Xue Ling was stuck in the street. The speed of this convoy was much faster than she expected, and she could hear the movement behind her.

Xue Ling usually keeps a distance from other zombies, but now the situation is critical, so she bites the bullet and squeezes into the gap between the zombies.

"Bang."

Xue Ling was startled by a zombie buddy who suddenly fell down beside him.

Xue Ling turned around subconsciously to take a look when he found that the zombie with a broken head was shot in the head by a silenced rifle.

It was strange. The slowly moving convoy was still some distance away from her, and there were several people killing zombies next to the cars, but her eyes were almost instantly attracted to a person sitting on the roof of the car.

It was strange that the man's name popped up in her mind after just one glance, before she even saw it clearly.

There was another bang, and another zombie fell down.

The man on the roof of the car was firing a gun, and zombies fell one after another in the group of zombies.

Xue Ling's eyes went dark and he fell down along with the zombie beside him.
