Chapter 09

Chapter 09

Wen Jiu was moving forward with a purpose. He was very familiar with Anxi City. Whenever he encountered a traffic jam that could not be cleared, or a road that had collapsed and was impassable, he could always find another way quickly.

But there are some places where you can't get around.

A few blocks away, we saw the words "Anxi Wenkang Hospital" on a building in the distance ahead, and Wen Jiuze, who was driving, said, "We're almost there."

Is he going to the hospital? Xue Ling wondered.

But it is well known that hospitals are places with the most zombies.

In the early days of the zombies, most people with symptoms gathered in hospitals, causing congestion inside the hospitals and even on the streets outside.

Even now, three years after the apocalypse, there are still countless zombies in major hospitals.

The zombies outside might be attracted away by various movements, but when they are locked up in the hospital, there are still countless zombies in each ward.

Not to mention that one person can go in alone, even a team of hundreds of people may not be able to enter and leave safely.

Xue Ling had seen a team break into another hospital somewhere else before. All the members were trapped inside and no one escaped.

What is Wen Jiuze going to the hospital for?

Wen Jiuze parked the car at a street corner some distance from the hospital, took out a large box from the trunk, and assembled something skillfully.

Xue Ling walked over and took a few looks. It looked like a sniper rifle, but a bit heavier.

Wen Jiuze assembled this big gang and added a special "bullet" the size of a fist.

Then he jumped onto the roof of the car carrying the thing, found a suitable angle, half-knelt and aimed at a shopping mall near Anxi Wenkang Hospital.

With a whoosh, a corner of the shopping mall building he was aiming at collapsed with a loud noise.

Xue Ling had heard this sound before. She had also heard it the day before she met Wen Jiuze. It turned out to be this noise.

Wen Jiuze only fired one bullet and stood on the roof of the car to observe through a telescope for a while.

He jumped out of the car, quickly disassembled the gun and put it back, and said to Xue Ling who was walking around, "Okay, let's go."

The zombies on the street to the left of the hospital were attracted by the loud noise and crowded into another street one after another. Wen Jiuze stared at this gap and drove the car through that street.

When he encountered some zombies that had not yet been wiped out on the road, he simply knocked them down with his car and ran over them.

The wheels hit something hard and uneven, causing the ride to be extremely bumpy. Xue Ling was fastened tightly by two safety belts so that she was not thrown into the air.

Wen Jiuze supported the roof of the car with one hand and steered the wheel with the other, nailing himself to the driver's seat and driving quickly across the street.

The car passed by Anxi Wenkang Hospital and drove away along a street lined with hanging bell trees.

So he wasn't going to the hospital, so where was he going? Xue Ling was curious.

After driving for a while, Xue Ling saw a pine and cypress forest. There were stone tombstones among the dark green pine and cypress trees.

It's a cemetery.

Wen Jiuze parked his car nearby, took his gun and a bag and got out of the car.

There were very few zombies in the cemetery. Wen Jiu dealt with the zombies that were attracted there before letting Xue Ling out of the car.

"Come on, follow me, don't run around."

Wen Jiuze took her past the neatly arranged tombstones. He did not stop in front of any tombstone as Xue Ling had imagined, but instead came to a corner of the cemetery.

There was a pine tree and a cypress tree growing together, with their crowns touching, and the flat ground was covered with pine needles and cypress nuts.

A squirrel at the foot of the tree heard them and ran quickly along the trunk.

"It's right here." Wen Jiuze sat down cross-legged under the tree and swept the ground with his hand.

"I buried my mother here, and I'll take you to see it if you pass by."

Xue Ling: “…………”

Luckily I'm a zombie now and don't have to react.

Otherwise she really didn't know how to deal with this situation.

Wen Jiuze did not expect Xue Ling, who had turned into a zombie, to give him any comfort.

And he looked very calm, as if he didn't need comfort.

He turned his head and looked into the distance. From here he could also see the inpatient building of Anxi Wenkang Hospital.

There are dozens of ward windows facing the cemetery.

This hospital was funded by the Wen family, and his mother received treatment in this hospital for eight years.

When Wen Jiuze was a child, he and his mother lived in the neighboring city of Gulan, and their life was extremely difficult.

My mother suffers from heart disease and cannot work hard. She cannot do any job for long and needs to take medicine frequently. Sometimes when her condition is serious, she has to lie in bed and cannot even get up.

Since he was very young, Wen Jiuze knew how to get medicine for his mother, boil water and cook. Although he was very young, he always played the role of a protector.

After being brought back to the Wen family at the age of twelve, his name was changed and his mother was admitted to the Wen family hospital for long-term treatment.

The director of the hospital is my cousin Wen Xuan’s uncle.

So no matter how Wen Xuan provoked him or deliberately bullied him, he could not resist.

Wen Xuan proudly told him that if he didn't obey, his mother would suffer.

The Wen family controls his mother and indirectly controls him.

My mother always cried and said that her illness had implicated him, but when he mentioned taking her away, she would shake her head and refuse to agree.

She felt that since he was adopted by the Wen family, he should stay in the Wen family to have a better future, otherwise he would suffer more if he was alone with her outside.

She always advised him to be patient and wait until he grew up and got his grandfather's approval.

It's not that she didn't notice the frequent injuries on his body, but when they lived outside, Wen Jiuze often fought with gangsters on the street and had injuries on his body as well.

No matter what, the Wen family is wealthy and powerful, and being a child of the Wen family is better than going back to live in a dilapidated building and being called a wild child.

Wen Jiuze sometimes felt that his mother's one-sided stubbornness was a little stupid, just like when she was tricked into getting pregnant by that playboy and irresponsible scumbag of the Wen family, and she still thought that man truly loved her.

Insisting on giving birth to him and not being able to complete my studies because of it was also an unwise decision.

If she hadn't been injured giving birth to him, and if she were healthier and prettier, she would definitely be living a better life than she is now.

But when this is mentioned, my mother would say: "You are my child, how could I regret giving birth to you? I just regret not being able to give you a better life. I don't know how long I can live with this disease. As long as I can see that you have a promising future and live a good life, I will die with peace of mind."

Wen Jiuze's days at the Wen family were just like his mother's illness, lingering and dying.

He went from being angry and unwilling to enduring the days numbly, like a seed dormant in the frozen soil, waiting for a new life, or waiting for his mother's death.

Beneath his indifference and calmness, there lies a volcano that may erupt at any time.

"Wen Jiuze, if, I mean if, if we are still together in a few years, would you want to marry me?"

——Xue Ling asked him one day, pretending to be indifferent.

She didn't know that her eyes were shining with anticipation when she asked this question.

Wen Jiuze felt that he was not good to her, but she still wanted to include him in her future.

He was happy and unhappy.

"What will marriage bring you?" He smiled casually, "It will bring you a bad man."

Xue Ling, whose temper was getting worse and worse, frowned, asked him if he was itchy again, kicked him and walked away angrily.

Wen Jiuze looked at her back and suddenly didn't want to wait any longer. He didn't want to continue following the Wen family's arrangements.

He returned from Yu City to the Wen family in Anxi City. His grandfather, Old Master Wen, had "suddenly died" during that time, and the Wen family fell into chaos.

Everything was going well, but the appearance of zombies disrupted his plans.

The end of the world came suddenly, and he decisively abandoned the Wen family's arrangements and prepared to transfer his mother away in the chaos.

But the zombies exploded too quickly, and the hospital was the first to fall.

It was like a purgatory and was immediately sealed off. No one dared to go in.

After he managed to get into Anxi Wenkang Hospital, he saw his mother's body in her ward.

Fortunately or unfortunately, she was not infected by the zombie virus, but died of a heart attack.

She was frightened in the chaos of the hospital and suddenly fell ill, but no doctor came to give her emergency treatment, so she died peacefully in the ward.

He took his mother's body away, watched it burn to ashes, and finally buried her here.

Because when he went to visit her before, she smiled and pointed to the cemetery here and told him that if she died in the future, she would be buried there. It was close to the hospital and convenient.

It was really chaotic at that time. He had no time to grieve. After burying his mother, he hurried back to Yu City to find Xue Ling.

As airplanes and high-speed trains were suspended, he drove back. The journey was dangerous and he was delayed for some time.

When he returned to Yu City, he couldn't find anyone.

Later, he kept looking for the person around Yu City. Unexpectedly, after such a long time, when he had given up hope, he saw the person he was looking for in Anxi City.

Why is she in Anxi City?

Xue Ling was no longer able to give him an answer and Wen Jiuze didn't want to think about it.

I think she might be looking for the answer from him.

The last time they met was not a pleasant one. What was her mood when she came to see him?

Did she come here during the most chaotic period? Was she scared when she couldn't find him? What did she go through to become a zombie?

The two people he wanted to protect the most and cared about the most, one was buried in the mud under him, and the other was beside him, both were dead.

Wen Jiuze suddenly wanted to laugh and swore silently. This damn life really played tricks on him.

He was originally sitting under the tree, but gradually he lay down, stretched out his legs, nonchalantly resting his head on the pine needles, and closed his eyes.

Xue Ling pretended to be wandering around nearby. After watching him being quiet for a while, she approached him quietly and found that he was actually asleep.

Is he pretending to sleep? Xue Ling moved closer, opened her mouth wide towards his neck, and waited for a while, but Wen Jiuze didn't move.

His breathing was even and there was no expression on his sleeping face.

Really fell asleep.

Xue Ling was speechless. He was too careless. He just fell asleep like this? Just sleeping here?

There's a zombie next to her, so he's not afraid that she'll be chewed by him.

Moreover, there are other zombies around even though the sky is covered with corpses!

When Xue Ling thought of this, she turned her head and saw a zombie coming over following the scent.

Xue Ling turned around and glared at the sleeping Wen Jiuze, then walked towards the zombie.

She changed her stiff and sluggish appearance in front of Wen Jiuze and even walked faster. Her movements were slightly smoother than the zombie in front of her. She punched the zombie man who was staggering towards her and knocked him off the head, then kicked him hard in the knee.

After a while, Xue Ling, cursing in his heart, dragged the fallen zombie behind the tombstone to avoid being discovered by Wen Jiuze.

Wen Jiuze woke up immediately. He squinted his eyes because of the light falling through the gaps in the pine trees. He raised his hand to his forehead and thought, I wasn't bitten.

There was no sound around. He stood up and saw Xue Ling still wandering around.

Why doesn't it bite him? Does it have no appetite for food that doesn't move?

He took a nap and felt hungry.

Wen Jiuze walked over and sat on the steps next to Xue Ling.

He opened his backpack and took out canned meat, canned oranges, self-heating noodles and a piece of bread in a simple package.

He has been to so many places. All the bases, big and small, first ensure food. Different bases produce different convenience foods to exchange for supplies.

The easiest to preserve compressed biscuits are the most widely available and cheaper, while other tasty canned breads are more expensive.

Wen Jiu opened the can and walked over to Xue Ling: "Do you want to eat?"

Xue Ling sniffed the long-lost food aroma twice without leaving any trace.

It had been so long since she had eaten human food that her mind was salivating but her body had no reaction to this kind of food.

Wen Jiuze saw that she had no reaction, so he ate it himself.

He opened the self-heating noodles, poured in water, waited for a while to mix it, and passed it to Xue Ling to let her smell it.

"Does it smell good? Do you want to eat it?"

Xue Ling: It smells good, but I don’t want to eat it.

Wen Jiuze withdrew his hand and ate this portion of noodles as well.

Noticed Xue Ling's lifeless red eyes on the bread.

"Do you want some bread?"

He stuffed the bread into Xue Ling's hand and watched her reaction.

Xue Ling holding the bread: She doesn’t want to eat bread, but if I remember correctly, this guy can’t eat bread because he will have an allergic reaction and get a rash.

It's the end of the world, food is precious, so don't waste it.

She struggled for a moment, then let go of the bread, letting it fall back into Wen Jiuze's arms.

"Okay, you don't want to eat the bread either, I'll eat it myself." Wen Jiuze finished the bread in a few bites, rubbed the back of her head and sighed.

"Why don't you eat anything? Aren't you hungry?"

Of course she was hungry, probably like she had been hungry for two meals, with a burning sensation in her stomach, but it was not to the extent that she would lose her mind and eat humans.

And after so long, I've gotten used to being hungry.

Otherwise why does she like to lie in one place without moving? Because that way she will feel less hungry.
