Age of Empires From Scratch - Chapter 5

[Chapter 5 Superb Archery Talent]

There is no way to determine it for the time being. David complained in his heart about his own golden finger. It was so unclear that he had to spend a lot of effort to figure it out. Wouldn’t it be better to just give him a system? It doesn’t need to be complicated. Even if there is only a prompt interface, it is clear and straightforward.

“The golden finger is not good!”

He came to the edge of the forest with Lao Fo. Looking at the towering trees standing in front of him, David retracted his messy thoughts: golden fingers, rewards and so on can be slowly figured out when there is time. For now, let’s study how to build a house!

“These are all good woods.” Lao Fo observed carefully for a moment and determined that these woods are very suitable for building houses.

After all, he is a paladin who led the army and fought against orcs. He has commanded his men to cut down trees and build camps. He still has this vision.

“The next step is to cut down trees.” This is not an easy job. They not only have to cut down big trees, but also clear the branches on the trunks, and then carry the whole thick log back to the village.

Although the village is not far from the forest, there is still a certain distance. David looked at the thick tree trunks and wondered if he could bear it.

“Oh, there is one thing I forgot to ask.” Lao Fo was still looking at the surrounding environment. He saw that the trees here were very thick, and the forest was so vast that he could not see the edge at all, which meant that they did not have to worry about whether there was enough wood.

“What’s the matter?”

“What is the name of our village?”

“…” David was stunned when he heard this question. He had never thought about this question.

Although the pioneer camp has been established for nearly two years, it has not been established as a real village because the development process was not smooth and the number of members continued to decrease. Therefore, the village has not been given a formal name.

“Because of various problems, there has been no formal name.” After answering Lao Fo’s question, David also thought about what name he should give the village? He

didn’t think about it before. He wanted to give up at that time. Now that he has decided to stick to it and has thought about the direction of development, the name of the village must be determined as soon as possible.

It is not only convenient to introduce it to the people who come later, but also the official village name needs to be filled in on the pioneering certificate, so that it will be convenient to report to the official of the kingdom in the future to obtain various rewards.

“Is that so!” Lao Fo has already chosen a big tree, and then swung the axe to start cutting wood: “Then you have to give it a good name.”

“I’ll think about it carefully.”

David also took out the axe and prepared to start chopping trees, but after a few cuts, he found that his efficiency was too far behind Lao Fo.

His current physical fitness is not bad, otherwise he would not have been able to survive two winters. As a hunter, he has never lacked meat since he was a child, and with years of exercise, it can be said that he is now much stronger than his previous life.

But compared with Lao Fo, who came from Azeroth, a human being created by the iron life created by the Titans and baptized by the Holy Light, he is a super weak chicken.

After Lao Fo chopped down a tree, he cleaned up the branches and leaves, and David was still struggling with the first tree trunk.

“By the way, there isn’t much food left in the village! I think we should collect and store more food.” The old Buddha saw that David’s physical fitness was much worse than his own, but he still waited until David cut down the first big tree before making his suggestion.

“Huh~” David knew that the old Buddha had good intentions. The efficiency difference between the two people in cutting trees was too obvious. It would be better to separate and do different tasks, so as not to affect the progress of cutting trees and ensure that there would be no shortage of food: “Then I’ll leave it to you.”

“Don’t worry, this kind of work is easy for me.” The old Buddha, who was once respected, was not opposed to rough work such as cutting trees. Since he was determined to live a relatively ordinary secluded life, he could no longer regard himself as the lord of Hearthglen in the Kingdom of Lordaeron.

The old Buddha is now an ordinary “farmer” who is ready to create a new life with his own hands.

Thinking of this, he felt that cutting trees was not so boring, and even became more motivated. The speed of the big trees falling became faster.

David, who was separated from the old Buddha, moved westward along the edge of the forest.

The river is in this direction. If you walk along the edge of the forest to the river bank and then walk north along the river bank, you will not get lost and it will be easier to find large animals.

This route is not absolutely safe, so David always holds the hunting bow in his left hand and his right hand always stays above the quiver hanging on his waist, so that he can take out the bow and arrows at any time to attack.

Suddenly, he caught a glimpse of a shadow passing by with his right hand, and he immediately took out an arrow with his right hand, and completed the action of nocking the arrow, opening the bow and aiming in the shortest time.

At this moment, David felt as if everything in his sight slowed down, and at the same time, the not very clear shadow became clear and even enlarged a lot, so he could see it more clearly.

Not only that, there was a feeling that made him realize that he needed to move a few centimeters to the left, that was the correct “crosshair”.

His thumb loosened the bowstring, and as the arrow flew off the string and swam towards the target, David even felt that he would definitely hit the target, and there was no need to make up for it.

Everything that happened next was just as he felt. The arrow accurately hit a pheasant, killing the prey cleanly and neatly. From the time David pulled out the arrow to the time the pheasant was shot and killed, it was just a blink of an eye.

“My goodness, my archery ability has improved a lot.”

Even though he had previously guessed that he had gained archery ability from Crawford, he did not expect the improvement to be so huge. In addition to the surprise, he thought of one thing: it seems that my original talent in archery was not good, and the gap between me and this master who can kill the entire organization of the opposite side with a bow and arrow is too big.

“I thought I could become a hunter, and I have some talent for archery!”

Then he thought again, even if his talent was not good, with people like Crawford and Old Buddha who kept appearing to help him upgrade, his future was quite bright.

After retrieving the arrows and hanging the pheasant on his left waist, David prepared to continue collecting food. In addition to meat, he also wanted to find more wild vegetables, mushrooms, wild fruits, etc., to ensure a more diverse food for a healthier life.

“Although meat is delicious, no one can stand eating only meat.”

He was lucky and picked some mushrooms and berries. Even though he had to squat there and pick them one by one when picking berries, he was not impatient at all, but was full of joy.

Just as he was happily picking berries, he suddenly felt that something was wrong and reacted immediately – throwing down a handful of berries in his hand and pounced to the side, picking up the hunting bow at hand and rolling to pick up his body.

Although he was covered with a lot of dirt and grass leaves and looked very embarrassed, he perfectly avoided the attack of the beast – it was a sturdy gray wolf.

“…” Seeing clearly what kind of beast was on the opposite side, David immediately glanced around, and sure enough, he found more gray wolves in the bushes, behind trees, and other places.

Slowly moving his position, David moved towards the river to avoid being attacked from both sides.

The gray wolf on the opposite side seemed to have sensed his thoughts, and pounced on David again while he was still moving slowly. What greeted the hungry wolf were arrows that flew out almost at the same time.

David had been a hunter for so many years, and it was not to be said that he had no unique skills: he was very good at rapid shooting, and could grab three to five arrows at a time, shoot them all in the shortest time, and ensure that these arrows hit within a circle of the size of a human head.

Now that he had received the reward of archery ability from Crawford, he could even compress this range into a fist-sized circle. When he concentrated on aiming, it seemed as if everything around him was in slow motion, which meant that David could better lock and shoot the target, even if the target was moving at high speed.

He killed the first enemy easily, but now was not the time to relax. David immediately pulled out two arrows from his quiver, and this time his targets came from two different directions.

With a high degree of concentration, the slow-motion-like picture gave his brain “enough” time to make judgments: the wolf on the left had already jumped up and made a pounce, while the wolf on the right was still sprinting and accumulating power, and the distance was also farther.

Although this state did not allow David to move faster, it allowed him to make the best judgment in an instant to kill: first left, then right!

The two arrows were shot one after another. Although they did not kill the wolf with one arrow, they also stopped the two wolves from charging forward, giving David some time. In just one or two seconds, several arrows flew over and shot the two wolves to kill them.

David’s movements were very fast. Instead of retreating, he rushed to the wolf that he had shot dead first, stretched out his hand to pull out the arrow that had pierced the wolf, and then shot another wolf with a round of rapid shooting.

David, who had completed the consecutive kills, reached out to take the arrow, but when he drew his bow and arrow again, the wolves had turned their heads and entered the forest, and all ran away without a trace.

“Running so fast!”

The highly tense spirit relaxed a little. David observed the surroundings vigilantly, then packed up the scattered berries, tied up the bodies of several gray wolves together and carried them on his back, and then walked back along the river bank carefully.

“Thanks Crawford!”

After making sure that the gray wolves didn’t catch up, David let out a long sigh and thanked Crawford again for providing him with super archery ability.

At the same time, he was looking forward to the various magical rewards provided by Old Buddha and even those who will appear in the future.
