Chapter 108 Personal Interrogation

“You should know that even if your identity as a secret agent is discovered, you were just a teenager back then, and you haven’t done anything wrong for the Military Intelligence Bureau over the years, nor have you taken a single penny of their funding. You don’t deserve to die.”

“But now that you have killed Liu Han, the crime is much more serious, even though Liu Han was a spy.”

"I think you're hiding the truth. Your motive for killing Liu Han doesn't make sense either. What are you hiding?"

Qiu Jingwen was still a little nervous.

After all, Chen Sheng, like Shao Jian, had doubts about his killing of Liu Han.

Qiu Jingwen naturally had to explain his motive for murder, and he gave the exact same explanation he gave to Shao Jian at the Hongqi Factory guesthouse.

He composed himself, then looked at Chen Sheng and Shao Jian and said:

"Boss, I didn't expect Liu Yihan to be so greedy, wanting me to complete the task. I have already reported this to Team Leader Shao."

Shao Jian picked up the conversation:

"Qiu Jingwen, you need to tell our leaders the truth again."

Shao Jian corrected Qiu Jingwen's inappropriate word choice, replacing "report" with "explanation" instead of "report".

Upon hearing this, Qiu Jingwen blushed slightly, feeling embarrassed.

He knew he hadn't grasped his role correctly. He was now a prisoner with two charges, and when he tried to explain his situation to the police leaders, he called it a report, which showed he hadn't understood his place.

"Okay, I'll tell you right away."

Qiu Jingwen immediately changed his tune, no longer using the word "report," and then recounted how Liu Han had once again demanded cash from him, and how, under the guise of the "hidden group," he was tasked with sabotaging the Hongqi Factory's production workshop and even destroying the explosives depot.

"Two leaders, over the years, I have long forgotten my identity as a secret agent. I have worked and lived in the Hongqi Factory for many years, and I have a wife and children. I also have deep feelings for the Hongqi Factory. How could I possibly agree to Liu Han's request to sabotage production and blow up the explosives depot?"

"So, I lured Liu Han to the forest in Orange Gully. I warned him first, but he not only ignored my warning, he also threatened me with the lives of my son Qiushou and daughter Qiuchan."

"At that time, I really couldn't bear it anymore, so I had no choice but to kill him."

"After killing Liu Han, I also regretted it--I really didn't intend to kill him---".

When Qiu Jingwen got emotional, tears welled up in his eyes and were about to fall.

He wasn't trying to be sentimental, nor was he acting; he was just speaking from the heart.

He even believed that he had killed Liu Han, because he thought that only in this way would the leaders believe that he was the murderer and not suspect his wife, Jiang Yuping.

After a period of silence, Shao Jian handed Qiu Jingwen a cigarette, and it was the Pegasus cigarette that Qiu Jingwen usually smoked.

Qiu Jingwen took the Pegasus, and Shao Jian got up and walked over to him, striking a match so he could light his cigarette.

Despite still being handcuffed, Qiu Jingwen was deeply moved, and he looked at Shao Jian with teary eyes.

"Thank you, boss!"

After saying that, he took two quick puffs of his cigarette, almost choking on them.

Shao Jian returned to his seat and looked at Chen Sheng:

"Director Chen, is there anything else you want to ask?"

After taking a couple of puffs of his cigarette, Chen Sheng stared into Qiu Jingwen's eyes.

"Qiu Jingwen, can you tell us about your parents and your sister?"

As soon as her parents were mentioned, Qiu Jingwen burst into tears.

Over the years, he has always kept his parents and sister in his heart.

However, twenty or thirty years have passed, and there has been no news of my parents or sister. All my memories are stuck in the pre-liberation era and my childhood.

Seeing Qiu Jingwen in tears, Chen Sheng and Shao Jian knew he was a man of deep emotions, with a profound attachment to his parents and sister. They didn't urge him on, but instead let Qiu Jingwen release something through his tears.

About two minutes later, Qiu Jingwen seemed to return to reality from his memories.

He recounted his memories of his parents, as well as the fabric shop and tailor business they ran, without reservation.

After listening to Qiu Jingwen's parents' story, Chen Sheng turned to Shao Jian and instructed him:

"Comrade Shao Jian, please arrange for someone to send Qiu Jingwen back to the detention cell. Be careful to keep it a secret. We'll discuss your idea later."

Shao Jian grunted in agreement, then walked out of the interrogation room and arranged for two police officers to take Qiu Jingwen away from the interrogation room.

After seeing Qiu Jingwen off, Shao Jian returned to the interrogation room and said to Chen Sheng:

"Director Chen, Wu Dinghuai, and Qian Weidong went to Qiu Jingwen's house and searched it before dinner, and then they also searched his workshop office."

Chen Sheng asked:

"Did you find any valuable clues or items during the search?"

Shao Jian shook his head and said:

"There are no clues about the Hidden Group. The only thing we found was a photo of Qiu Jingwen's family of four when they were young."

"Shao Jian, call Xiao Wu later and ask him to send over the photos. Tomorrow I will go to the provincial department to report on Qiu Jingwen's situation, including the photos, Qiu Jingwen's surrender, and a detailed report on Liu Han's murder case, as well as Niu Dajiang's last words. All of these should be included in the report."

Shao Jian agreed to do so, then looked up and asked:

"Director Chen, regarding the identity of Qiu Jingwen's parents, has the provincial department sent anyone to Beijing to investigate?"
