Chapter 125 Decrypting the Identity

After Qiu Jingwen accepted Shao Jian's offer to defect, they communicated with the Municipal Bureau and returned to the Hongqi Factory. Unless there were special circumstances, they would no longer contact the investigation team directly, except for social occasions in public.

However, the letter in his hand made Qiu Jingwen uneasy. He felt that since he had decided to atone for his crimes, the contents of the letter should be handed over to Shao Jian for processing. After all, the letter contained a lot of information. On the other hand, Qiu Jingwen also had his own selfish motives. The part of the letter in which Liu Han mentioned his parents as revolutionaries made him feel more confident and proud. He was originally the descendant of underground workers. From a legal point of view, even if he was dealt with, he would not be treated like a regular agent.

In Shao Jian's view, the anonymous letter pointed to the existence of someone codenamed Butterfly, suggesting that the writer was an enemy agent. Butterfly was likely the leader of the covert operation, the person in charge of the entire covert operation. If both of them were infiltrating the Red Flag Factory, and Qiu Jingwen had been turned and frequently contacted the investigation team, it would certainly arouse suspicion among the agents. Would Qiu Jingwen have been turned by the public security department? After all, spies are not fools; many are elites. The leader of the covert operation would certainly be a veteran agent, and likely of a lower rank.

Seeing that Qiu Jingwen acted first and reported later, Shao Jian was naturally somewhat displeased, but he thought that Qiu Jingwen was, after all, a teenager back then. Although he had received training, his consideration of issues was still inadequate.

"Director Qiu, is there something you need?" Shao Jian asked, almost as if he already knew the answer.

"Boss, I have something important to report."

Qiu Jingwen nodded at Shao Jian. As a trained special agent, he naturally knew it was not advisable to take the initiative to contact Shao Jian and his group. However, the incident was sudden and the information was so important. He felt that Shao Jian was inside the Hongqi Factory, and they had had several previous contacts without much impact. After all, this was a peaceful era, not the White Terror and cruel environment before liberation.

Shao Jian looked at Qiu Jingwen and nodded: "Comrade Qiu Jingwen, sit down and let's talk. What's the important matter?"

Now that Qiu Jingwen has been won over, it's not unreasonable for Shao Jian to call him "comrade." Besides, if the spies find out that he, Shao Jian, calls Qiu Jingwen "comrade," it only means that Qiu Jingwen's identity has not been exposed.

Qiu Jingwen did not sit down, but took the letter out of his toolbox and handed it directly to Shao Jian.

After reading the letter, Shao Jian's expression was one of utter astonishment. Like Qiu Jingwen, he hadn't expected that Liu Han had been an underground party worker before liberation, and later became a traitor. At the same time, he recalled the meeting convened by provincial leaders, where Liu Han's special identity was mentioned. Now, he realized that this special identity must have referred to these things, though he lacked supporting evidence.

Based on what Liang Damin learned from Wei Dongmei, Shao Jian had assumed Qiu Jingwen was either a revolutionary martyr or his descendant. However, he hadn't expected that Qiu Jingwen's father, Qiu Zhongjing, was a high-ranking underground worker with a special identity. Shao Jian imagined that if Qiu Jingwen's father hadn't been betrayed by Liu Han and sacrificed his life (which he believed was warranted), he would likely be holding at least a provincial-level leadership position after liberation, or even now, given that he was the secretary of the Xuhuai District Committee at the time. What surprised Shao Jian even more was the letter's mention of Jiang Yuping possibly being a top-tier agent trained by the Japanese Mei Agency in her youth?

"Impossible, right?"

As a veteran police officer, Shao Jian couldn't believe that Jiang Yuping was Kawashima Eiko's Japanese. However, based on Liu Han's letter, he felt that Liu Han wrote the letter to Qiu Jingwen with a repentant attitude and it was impossible for him to deliberately mislead people.

After carefully reading the letter, Shao Jian looked at Qiu Jingwen again and had an indescribable feeling.

In fact, after Liu Hanhan was murdered, and after Qiu Jingwen took the initiative to confess that he was the murderer and that he was a spy codenamed Cobra, Shao Jian returned to the Municipal Bureau and, together with Chen Sheng, carefully studied Qiu Jingwen's history and files, and considered Qiu Jingwen's ordinary life of working hard and making progress over the years.

They concluded that Qiu Jingwen was young and naive, and forced by circumstances, he was dragged into the mess by Liu Han. After liberation, he was essentially a kite with a broken string. The attempt to win Qiu Jingwen over also involved him gaining merit, and they deduced from Wei Dongmei's words that Qiu Jingwen's parents must have been revolutionaries before liberation.

Now, Liu Han's letter to Qiu Jingwen has completely confirmed their initial judgment. Although the final answer will be brought back by the provincial police officers who went to Beijing, Shao Jian believes that the fact that Qiu Jingwen's parents were revolutionaries should not change.

"This content is very important. I will go back to the Municipal Bureau to report in a while. This letter should be a breakthrough in deciphering many things."

Shao Jian's certainty was not just empty talk. He had investigated a case involving enemy agents before liberation and had been to the Xuhuai area. During this time, he had inadvertently come across a case involving a cloth shop near Jing'an Temple in Shanghai. However, that case seemed to be unsolved. It was a mystery who betrayed the cloth shop owners. This letter could undoubtedly unravel the mystery of that year.

In Shao Jian's brief thought process, Qiu Jingwen's father was betrayed by his own man, Liu Yanhan, back then. It was just that no one knew Liu Yanhan was a traitor; this was merely Shao Jian's conjecture. He also believed that sending this letter to higher authorities would greatly help, and perhaps even lead to breakthroughs, in solving many cases from that time.

Qiu Jingwen didn't linger any longer. He said goodbye to Shao Jian and Wu Dinghuai, then turned and left.

Wu Dinghuai looked at Shao Jian with curiosity: "Director Shao, what important information did Qiu Jingwen bring?"

Shao Jian didn't hide anything from Wu Dinghuai and handed the letter to him, saying, "Dinghuai, take a look for yourself. It will definitely surprise you."
