Chapter 47 Playing on the Edge

In front of Qiu Jingwen, Liang Damin addressed Zhou Huaihai, the head of the Hongqi Factory, as "Old Zhou," and sometimes as "Boss Zhou."

Zhou Huaihai's original name was Zhou Dazhu. He was the deputy company commander of the vanguard company when he participated in the Huaihai Campaign. After liberation, he served in the army for more than ten years. Later, when the Third Front factories were built, he was assigned to the Hongqi Factory, a military industrial enterprise under the military organization.

To commemorate his participation in the great historical event of the Huaihai Campaign, he changed his name to Zhou Huaihai on his household registration book. He started as the director of the political department and has worked his way up to the top position of Party Secretary.

The quick-witted Qiu Jingwen quickly realized that Liang Damin was not testing him. He and his colleagues in the investigation team, including Zhou Huaihai, genuinely trusted him and had no suspicions that he was a secret agent.

But the fact is, I am a secret agent.

Although he had never done anything wrong over the years, never carried out a mission for the Military Intelligence Bureau, never had any contact with the undercover team, and never received a single penny of so-called party and state funds, he knew that none of this could change his identity as a secret agent.

He was initially recruited into the Military Intelligence Bureau training program by Liu Yihan and later became a member of the covert group. This history and his personal information must be documented on the Taiwan Strait side. As the investigation by public security personnel deepens, the situation of the covert group will inevitably come to light sooner or later.

That's only one aspect. More importantly, now, his wife has killed Liu Han.

As the task force delves deeper into the murder case, who knows when the wife's identity as the murderer will be revealed?

Qiu Jingwen didn't dare to think any further.

He handed Liang Damin another Pegasus, without saying or asking anything else.

Liang Damin didn't stand on ceremony and reached out to take the cigarette.

To avoid wasting cigarettes, Liang Dashi skillfully emptied a few strands of tobacco from one end of the cigarette, then attached the unfinished cigarette butt to the whole cigarette, carefully twisting it a few times to connect the two cigarettes smoothly, making them fit together seamlessly as a single unit.

After successfully connecting the two cigarettes, Liang Damin put them in his mouth and took two puffs. Judging from his expression, he was enjoying the sense of accomplishment that came with the successful connection.

After taking a few puffs, Liang Damin stared at Qiu Jingwen and suddenly said:

"Old Qiu, actually, I came here not for your son's autumn harvest, but for your wife Jiang Yuping."

Upon hearing Jiang Yuping's name, Qiu Jingwen instinctively tensed up.

Liang Damin summoned him because of his wife, Jiang Yuping?!

Could it be that the task force has found a lead regarding the wife's murder and has identified her as the suspect?

Although he was very nervous, Qiu Jingwen had a strong ability to control his emotions, and there was no particularly surprised expression on his face.

"Old Liang, what do you mean by saying this because of my wife?"

Qiu Jingwen looked directly into Liang Damin's sharp, eagle-like eyes.

He tried his best not to let Liang Damin see any flaws in his tone and eyes.

When Liang Damin saw Qiu Jingwen's surprised and nervous expression, he smiled at him.

"Old Qiu, there's absolutely no problem with your wife's file. She has no connection to enemy agents, at least not to the infiltrator group hiding in the Duliang area. However, according to the police investigation, the deceased Liu Yihan had direct contact with your wife."

Qiu Jingwen showed a surprised expression again.

"Have you had contact with him? You mean my wife is listed as a suspect in Liu Xianghai's murder?"

Liang Damin immediately waved his hand.

"Old Qiu, no, no, no, you're overthinking things again. That's not what I meant. Don't misunderstand, and don't be nervous."

Qiu Jingwen quickly pressed for more information.

"Old Liang, what does that mean?"

"Old Qiu, according to the police investigation, Liu Xianghai went to the infirmary to see your wife Jiang Yuping, and it seems that it was more than once."

At this point, Liang Damin took a drag of his cigarette and continued:

"You know, in order to eliminate suspects, the police may question anyone who has had contact with the deceased Liu Xianghai. Do you think we should give your wife a heads-up beforehand so she can be mentally prepared and avoid any psychological trauma later?"

Qiu Jingwen deliberately frowned and thought for a moment, then looked at Liang Damin.

"Old Liang, although Jiang Yuping is a doctor, she doesn't even dare to slaughter a small rooster at home. Will the investigation team suspect that she is the murderer of Liu Xianghai?"

Although Qiu Jingwen had a good mental fortitude, he almost mispronounced Liu Xianghai as Liu Han.

Fortunately, Liang Damin didn't notice anything amiss and had no suspicions, because he felt that Qiu Jingwen wasn't referring to a person's name, but rather to Liu Xianghai, Liu 'Bo'.

It was only natural for Qiu Jingwen to address an elderly man as Uncle Liu.

"Old Qiu, please don't misunderstand. The police officers didn't list your wife as a suspect. Otherwise, I wouldn't have reminded you. This is a violation of discipline and a leak of information. Besides, it's not just your wife who needs to be questioned."

"Old Liang, are we going to question him today?"

"Old Qiu, although I am a member of the investigation team, this murder case is mainly handled by the police. I am just playing a supporting role, so I don't know when your wife will be questioned. Just wait for notification."

"Oh, I see. Thank you, Lao Liang, but I think it's best not to remind Jiang Yuping."

"Old Qiu, this is good. You can give your wife a hint. If the police find out, I'll have a hard time explaining it to them. We've been friends and chess partners for many years. I just thought of this myself, and I felt bad if I didn't tell you beforehand."

"Old Qiu, you're not very principled, but I still want to thank you!"

As soon as he finished speaking, a jeep pulled up in front of the office door, accompanied by the sound of its wheels scraping against the ground.
