Duliang is located in the hilly area of northern Jiangsu, and there are countless mountains of all sizes throughout the region.
When the country was building the Third Front, Duliang became a key area, with five military industrial enterprises built in the mountainous areas to the east, west, south and north of the county seat.
These military factories were all 30 to 50 kilometers away from the city. One produced medical equipment, another manufactured firearms, another manufactured artillery parts, and another produced pesticides and fertilizers. The Hongqi Factory was the only military factory that produced high explosives.
Since two nearby military industrial enterprises (military industrial codes 6372 and 7921) discovered that enemy agents were stealing military intelligence, guns were stolen, and sabotage was carried out, the Ministry of Ordnance and the provincial military industrial bureau have attached great importance to the matter. The security work of the several military factories is managed by local authorities, or rather, by joint management, in addition to each enterprise having a security department equipped with firearms. This is also the reason why the local public security bureau intervened in the whole case.
Shao Jian is a veteran police officer with rich experience. After accepting the task from the head of the investigation team, he was under a lot of pressure.
His biggest worry was that enemy agents were hiding inside the Hongqi Factory, waiting for an opportunity to sabotage it.
After all, this is a military enterprise that produces high explosives. If enemy agents were to sabotage it, the consequences would be extremely serious, and it could even cause a catastrophic and devastating event.
As for Shao Jian's suspicion of Qiu Jingwen and his wife, it wasn't because he found any suspicious points in the files, but because all three members of the Qiu family had interacted with the deceased Liu Xianghai. He was even certain that Liu Xianghai's death was related to Qiu Jingwen and his wife, but he couldn't find any evidence. This was why he asked his capable assistant Wu Dinghuai to arrange for people to secretly monitor Qiu Jingwen and his wife.
When the leader inquired about Qiu Jingwen and his wife's situation, Wu Dinghuai shook his head:
"Director Shao, so far, our people have not found anything unusual about Qiu Jingwen and his wife. They go to get off work and leave work normally and have not had any contact with other unrelated or strangers."
Shao Jian asked again:
"Dr. Jiang Yuping, did she leave the Hongqi Factory before Liu Xianghai was killed?"
Wu Dinghuai nodded and replied:
"Yes, but she was in the Hongqi Factory ambulance, escorting an injured worker from one of the factory's workshops to a city hospital. The worker had two fingers crushed by a machine and needed to have them reattached at the city hospital. Jiang Yuping's actions were part of her work duties and not unauthorized absences."
"What was her activity pattern after she went to the city hospital?"
"Director Shao, there's no way to find out the results. We can only call Jiang Yuping over and let her explain herself."
"Do not talk to her again until there is sufficient evidence to prove that she killed Liu Xianghai."
"Director Shao, do you really suspect she's the murderer of Liu Xianghai? Now that we know Liu Xianghai was a special agent, how could such a frail woman kill a veteran special agent?"
"Dinghuai, don't forget, Liu Xianghai's real cause of death was poisoning by potassium cyanide. Jiang Yuping is a doctor. If she got her hands on potassium cyanide, let alone Liu Xianghai being an old and decrepit spy, even if he were an elephant, he certainly wouldn't be a match for Jiang Yuping."
"But why would Jiang Yuping kill a special agent? I still can't figure it out."
"Perhaps my reasoning and judgment are flawed, but I hope it's all just my reasoning."
"Director Shao, stop beating around the bush and tell us your reasoning. Why did you set your sights on Dr. Jiang Yuping?"
“Dinghuai, didn’t you notice that Jiang Yuping is very calm inside, like someone who has been trained. She has a very strong mental fortitude, and the tension she shows is also deliberate.”
"Really? I didn't see that. Boss, please explain your suspicions and reasoning."
"It's not the right time yet. Continue to monitor Qiu Jingwen and his wife. Report any new developments to me immediately."
"Yes, sir, I guarantee the mission will be accomplished."
"By the way, did you take a picture of Niu Dajiang's letter?"
“I took photos, including the scene where Niu Dajiang hanged himself. I arranged for people to take photos at the time.”
After hearing this, Shao Jian raised his wrist to check the time:
“Niu Dajiang’s two daughters should be arriving soon. In a little while, you, Zhao Le, and Liang Damin will be responsible for communicating with their daughters and family members. You should know what information to ask, right?”
"Yes, Director Shao, no problem."
No sooner had he finished speaking than Liang Damin and a group of people stood outside the investigation team's door.
It was said to be a group of people, at least ten or so, including adults and children. Two middle-aged women were sobbing incessantly, their eyes red and swollen from crying.
Clearly, they were devastated upon hearing the news of their father's death.
Liang Damin and Niu Dajiang's two daughters started sobbing, then addressed the group:
"Please wait here. People can't be brought back to life. Don't be sad. I'll go and ask the police leaders for instructions."
In fact, after Liang Damin sent someone to inform Niu Dajiang's two daughters, he instructed them to wait for the two daughters and their families to arrive at the factory and wait for his arrangements.
As soon as Liang Damin finished speaking, Niu Dajiang's eldest daughter, Niu Jiazhen, wiped away her tears and began to complain loudly:
"You leaders of the Hongqi Factory, do you have any sense of reason? My great-grandfather is gone, and you won't even let us see him first. Why did you bring us here? Besides, my great-grandfather was perfectly fine. How could he have hanged himself? Is it because my brother isn't home, and my great-grandfather was murdered?"
(Note: "大" and "大大" in the Duliang area refer to the father.)
Liang Damin didn't say anything.
He knew that as a daughter, it was normal for her to say some extreme things after learning of her father's sudden death.
