Chapter 72 Anonymous Letter

The full text of the whistleblower letter is as follows:

Respected leaders of Hongqi Factory

I know who killed barber Liu Xianghai. They are Qiu Jingwen, the director of the third workshop of your Hongqi Factory, and his doctor wife Jiang Yuping.

Don't ask me how I know, anyway, it was that the couple who killed Liu Xianghai.

Murderers must pay with their lives. Please bring Qiu Jingwen and his wife to justice.

The letter was anonymous, and the handwriting was delicate, resembling that of a woman.

There was no date or name written on it.

After reading the letter, Liang Damin looked at Zhou Huaihai and asked:

"Boss, where did this letter come from?"

Zhou Huaihai glanced at Yi Baoguo, then told Liang Damin:

"The letter was sent to the Political Work Department. After Lao Yi read it, he immediately contacted me. I felt that this was a very serious matter, so I immediately called you over for a quick meeting to discuss how to handle this letter."

At this point, he sighed for Liang Damin and Yi Baoguo.

"As you know, I watched Qiu Jingwen grow step by step, starting as a team leader and rising to the position of workshop director. I have a very high opinion of his character and personality. It's impossible for him to have committed murder. Think about it, why would he kill an unrelated old man? Why would he kill that barber?"

"Such a perfect, enviable family, why would they commit murder? I really don't understand. Besides, I often go to see his wife, Jiang Yuping, for medical treatment. She's gentle and kind; she doesn't seem like a murderer at all."

"But this anonymous letter is so certain, directly pointing out the murderer instead of just suspecting him. What do you think we should do with this anonymous letter? Should we hand it over to the investigation team that's handling the case, and give it to Comrade Shao Jian?"

After hearing Zhou Huaihai's words, Liang Damin understood that Shao Jian had not discussed the case with Zhou Huaihai.

In other words, Zhou Huaihai was unaware of the situation of the deceased Liu Xianghai. He did not know that his original name was Liu Hanhan, nor did he know the specific details of the Hidden Group, let alone that Shao Jian had been monitoring Qiu Jingwen.

As the deputy head of the investigation team, Liang Damin looked at Zhou Huaihai and shared his suggestions and thoughts.

“Secretary Zhou, such an important anonymous letter should of course be handed over to the investigation team and given to Director Shao Jian.”

Zhou Huaihai stared at Liang Damin and asked:

"If we hand it over to Shao Jian, wouldn't that mean they'd investigate and monitor Qiu Jingwen and his wife, or even arrest and interrogate them?"

Liang Damin really wanted to tell Zhou Huaihai that Shao Jian had been monitoring Qiu Jingwen and his wife.

But Shao Jian's request for secrecy at the meeting made him temporarily abandon the idea, so he looked at Zhou Huaihai and said:

“Leader, I am the deputy head of the investigation team. If I didn’t know about this, I would have no right to ask how you and Director Yi handled this letter. Now that I know, it would be irresponsible of me not to report to Director Shao Jian.”

"Besides, they've already sent an anonymous letter. If we don't even investigate Qiu Jingwen and his wife, they might write to higher authorities to expose them. At that point, our factory leaders and everyone else will probably be in a difficult position."

Zhou Huaihai asked:

"If we hand it over to Shao Jian, wouldn't that be unfair to Qiu Jingwen's family? Investigating them based on an anonymous letter without any concrete evidence, I'm really worried that it might mislead the investigation team's direction and hurt Qiu Jingwen and his wife's relationship."

"Besides, haven't we been through enough over the years? There have been too many instances of fabricating stories and exposing each other for different interests. How many comrades have been wrongly imprisoned, even---sigh, never mind, I came to you because I wanted to hear your opinion."

Yi Dingguo, who had been silent until now, took over the conversation, looking at Zhou Huaihai and saying:

“Leader, I understand your feelings. You don’t want him and his family to be hurt because he is such a good cadre in our Hongqi Factory and has been a model worker every year. However, as the saying goes, a clear conscience fears no accusation. If Qiu Jingwen is innocent, the investigation can clear his name. Wouldn’t that be better? Moreover, it can also show from the side that someone is trying to frame Director Qiu and his wife Jiang Yuping.”

Liang Damin also agreed with Yi Baoguo's suggestion, and looked at Zhou Huaihai, saying:

"Leader, Director Yi is right. Actually, I'm just like you. I would never believe that Qiu Jingwen and his wife have any problems, let alone that they are murderers. But, Director Shao Jian said that the more likely they are enemy agents, the more skillfully they disguise themselves, and the less likely they are to be found out."

After saying that, Liang Damin wanted to slap himself.

In fact, that was not his intention; he did not believe that Qiu Jingwen and his wife could have faked it so perfectly.

Listen carefully to what he's saying, and Zhou Huaihai glared at Liang Damin after hearing it.

Clearly, Liang Damin's words were pointed, as if Qiu Jingwen's excellence and model worker status were all a facade.

So he frowned, looked at Liang Damin, and asked:

"Liang Damin, tell me honestly, has your investigation team already discovered that Qiu Jingwen has a problem?"

Liang Damin naturally couldn't leak the secret, much less tell Zhou Huaihai that Liu Han was the deputy leader of the Military Intelligence Bureau's infiltrated group in Duliang, especially with Yi Baoguo from the Political Work Department present.

"Boss, please don't misunderstand. I think that since someone is writing anonymous letters, it's not without reason. It's better to be cautious."

As Liang Damin spoke, he took out a pack of cigarettes, handed one to Zhou Huaihai and one to Yi Baoguo, and then lit one for himself.

That morning, he was bombarded with information, all pointing to Qiu Jingwen, which made him suspicious of both his friend and his chess partner.
