Ghost (Edit)
A faint burnt smell from the keyhole spread with the wind. I froze in place, not daring to look up, for fear that the thing behind the door would know that I had noticed something unusual.
Time suddenly became incredibly slow. I didn't feel anything when I looked around just now, but once I realized that this door was useless, my fear suddenly surged out, as if something was pinching my heartbeat and starting to count down, making it a little hard for me to breathe.
A voice was shouting in the little sanity I had left, asking repeatedly if there was anything behind the door. Was it holding the door handle on the other side, standing there quietly, looking at me through the half-open door? All it took was a gentle push -
When people are anxious, their palms sweat and become sticky and slippery. At this time, I felt an itch on my hand, as if something leaked out from the keyhole and dripped onto my palm. Suddenly, my whole body trembled, and I subconsciously let go of my hand and threw it out. I felt a very uncomfortable texture on my skin.
Then another drop, with a very sticky smell of metallic powder, fell slowly and almost silently to the ground, almost hanging on my cheek.
When I looked in the direction of the flashlight, my hair stood on end. I saw a small ball of damp black liquid spreading on the ground and seeping into the outline of the long shadow bit by bit.
Damn it, what black umbilical cord, what skinny ghost shadow, it was obvious that something had eaten away and melted the molten iron and wax that had been poured into the keyhole, and over time it dripped down, gradually flowing down the terrain and forming a puddle of strange shape.
However, there was not much liquid in it to begin with, and it dried up quickly after seeping into the ground, leaving only the metal powder that had been severely rusted and stained black.
I didn't even need to calculate. I just quickly thought about it in my mind and realized that this long and narrow ghost shadow extending all the way to the street light under my feet represented a protracted tug-of-war.
This is just like marking the safety warning line of the highest water levels in history to prevent floods. This ghost shadow is an extremely eye-catching, dynamic warning picture that grows passively.
Combined with the fresh burnt smell that was still lingering and the mucus on the base of my thumb, my head started buzzing, my back bones went numb, and I thought something was wrong.
I'm afraid that just recently, someone came to check it for the second time, but they didn't repair the missing seal and the damaged lock core. There was no warning information left.
Where is that person now? Did he leave long ago and not know about the changes here, or did he meet with an accident?
Is it like me now, when I was handling the door lock, I suddenly found something wrong with the lock core. As a result, I was attacked without any preparation and was dragged into the door.
Is the person behind this iron door... really Nian Huairen, who could kill even a seven-year-old child with a blade?
I suddenly felt a little uncertain about what I was going to face. Did I really just get separated from Zhang Tianyi, Sanyi and the others?
My frozen body had almost no strength left at this point. I controlled all unnecessary reactions, slowly got up from the ground, straightened up and stepped back, staring at the dark crack in the door.
One, two, three, I counted silently in my mind, please, please, don't come out, don't move, no matter what is behind me, I want to quietly retreat, the farther the better. We have been living in peace for so long, just give me another ten seconds.
Before he could finish his thought, the light in the room flickered, flickered twice and went out.
I was startled, and before I could react, my hand suddenly felt hot, and it made an extremely ominous hissing sound. I was so scared that I cursed in my heart, because I had already taken away the bottom cover, and I could see at a glance that the battery inside had bulged at some point, as if it had been rapidly swollen in the mist. Then a yellow light spurted out, and the flashlight exploded in the next second.
In the exploding sparks, I was burned and my hand fell off. My entire wrist was burning with pain and I soon lost most of consciousness. I had no idea where I was hurt. I took several steps back in panic and the remains of the flashlight flew out and hit the iron gate with a loud noise like thunder.
At this time, there was another ghostly panting sound, but it was not from the draft, but came from the small window above the head.
I looked up suddenly, but before I could see anything, the light was gone. I only heard a creaking sound, as if an iron door was slightly pushed open, and I was plunged into complete darkness.
This time I didn't need to think at all. I held back the scream in my throat and turned around to run. In a panic, I never knew the way so well. I just relied on my memory to climb over the rusty railing and rushed into the fog like crazy.
I don't know why, but the resistance was still huge in the thick fog. I felt like I was going to cough out my lungs. I almost tripped over my left foot and fell to the ground while running, but I didn't dare to stop and kept running with all my might.
A series of panting sounds behind me passed through the weeds and dissipated into the fog, as if they were hooked by the remaining metal pieces of a flashlight, and they were chasing me quickly with a clanging sound.
My brain exploded. Damn it, how could this son of a bitch be Nian Huairen? Fuck you! The youngest man in your family looks like a 40-meter-long python. Did you hear that Zhang Tian changed three times in one year? Fuck you! He fell down again while cursing, and then with a bang, he hit a metal pillar directly.
I was caught off guard this time, stars appeared in my eyes, tears burst out, and I thought my nose was crooked an inch. I immediately got up and ran, but then I was so unlucky that I stepped on some debris and almost slipped and flew out.
I rushed out a dozen steps and accidentally kicked a fallen fluorescent warning tape. Then I realized that the one who had attacked me was just a street lamp. It had exploded for some reason. Fortunately, I didn't step on the broken glass under my feet.
I learned my lesson this time. While running wildly, I waved my hands forward and left and right in a very funny way, which avoided the second collision. I don't know how long I ran, but finally I heard the tinkling sound behind me getting farther away.
Before I could breathe a sigh of relief, the thing suddenly stopped moving in the fog. After a while, there was a clang, as if the iron sheet of my loyal flashlight had scraped against something else and had fallen off and stopped working.
After this sound, the surroundings fell into terrible silence again.
My eyes went dark and I stood there for a while due to lack of oxygen. My brain was almost blank and I couldn't tell where the thing chasing me was lurking.
The thick fog and darkness reduced my senses to the lowest level. It seemed that I couldn't do anything at this time. I just felt my heartbeat almost reaching my throat and my chest was about to explode. I knew that if something came out of the fog and tried to bite me, I probably wouldn't have the strength to hide and would just die on the spot.
No way, is it the end of it?
I always feel a little bit unconvinced. I think to myself that I haven't even used the two masters yet, which makes me think that all my hard work has been in vain. Don't I even have some unethical means to die together?
After two seconds of despair, I sighed, slapped my face hard, forced myself to lie down, and began to organize my thoughts.
Never mind, there is no point in being afraid, it will only make you look cowardly. Let that thing come if it wants to, no matter what tricks it has, I need to think about it carefully now, and enjoy my original intention of getting to the bottom of it with tears in my eyes.
First of all, where did my two brothers who were invincible in the world go?
I turned over on the damp ground and forced myself to cross my legs, trying to look more stylish and not too embarrassing.
I said to myself seriously, that’s not right. I was so scared that I didn’t have time to think all the way. Did I miss something?
Did they get lost and take my cat with them?
...Or did I suddenly disappear?
It's so familiar, I must have seen this scene before. I know why this incident happened.
While I was thinking, the thick fog was stirred like water, and a series of panting sounds slowly approached, sometimes far away, sometimes near, just not far away from me.
I ignored it with a stiff face, turned over and continued thinking, treating myself like an ostrich.
"...Brother? Dongzai?" I muttered in the thick fog, my voice still a little trembling, trying my best to ignore the ghost thing chasing me out of the door, "I have an idea, if you are here."
As I was talking, the thing had already stopped, right in front of me. It was so close that the fog was not enough to hide it, and I could vaguely see an indescribable outline in my peripheral vision.
I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, and let the gentle exhalation sound touch the back of my head.
Something wet and sticky touched my back. I could feel that what came out of the door and lingered in the fog was an unnatural giant, its body was also long and narrow, very similar to the long shadow like the dripping black umbilical cord.
It was impossible to control my fear. I gritted my teeth and thought through all the angry and ecstatic moments in my life. But I found that they were of no use and I had to recall all the embarrassing and awkward moments in my history.
Perhaps when people are so ashamed and angry that they want to die, they always have the last bit of courage to get up from the brink of death. I slowly let go of my emotions, and temporarily let go of all my perceptions and fantasies about the ghosts around me. Then, even more slowly, while sweating profusely, I raised my middle finger to that thing.
If you have the guts, just bite me. Before I take my last breath, let me take off your underwear and die together.
I said silently, and I gritted my teeth and regained some of the malice I had when I was a naughty kid. I turned my head and looked at the darkness around me. I couldn't help but touch my shoulders, which were a little sore:
"...Dear brother, dear cat, am I suddenly unable to see you?"
There was no answer from around me. I let out a long sigh, knowing that I looked like a lunatic who was escaping from reality after a mental breakdown.
But I was not joking. “I don’t think it’s right. Nian Huairen shouldn’t be like this, and my situation shouldn’t be like this. But to say that all this is my fantasy or hysteria, I don’t think it fits.” The ghost in front of me must be real, but I have not yet realized the logic behind its behavior, and I don’t know what the underlying rules that restrict it are.
However, this did not prevent me from becoming more and more certain of one thing amidst the irresistible tension:
The fact that I'm living such a miserable life after being separated from my friends doesn't fit with my image as a think tank who is extravagant, indulgent, and lazy.
Not to mention Zhang Tianyi and Sanyi who brought me here personally, even any of my more familiar friends (including Pingping's friends and her phantom) would not let me fall into this situation. Even if I was imprisoned in a place too deep for the weird talk, at least the little fat cat would be by my side.
To be frank, this is an iron rule that has never been violated in my lucky and selfish life. It is a favor given by all the people I love, and it is more faithful to promises than ghost stories. If "Xu Ranxing" has its own rules to abide by, this must be the first one. I can always be confident about this.
Then, maybe I should calm down and think about it the other way around. Is it possible that Zhang Tianyi, Sanyi, and Dongzai are really right beside me, facing this inexplicable and terrifying ghost with me?
In fact, something suddenly went wrong with me and I was unable to recognize their existence normally.
It’s like... a sudden flash of enlightenment came to my mind and said: Just like Zhang Tianyi and Sanyi can’t see Pingping?
