The Second Story, The Dancing Neighbor (Revised)
On a rainy night many years ago, the exact time is no longer known, Dr. Hu, who was still a young man, was quite excited to sit in front of a row of telephones in the duty room for the first time.
The two nurses who were also on night shift were older than her, and they couldn't help but laugh at her expression of being so new to everything. It just so happened that they had a few minutes of free time at this hour, so they each held a cup of hot tea and sipped it in their spare time.
At that time, Dr. Xiao Hu was still a silly intern. The biggest scene she had seen since she was admitted to the hospital was a few days ago when a social worker who was in a hurry to get off work accidentally broke his head while passing through the green belt and came to the emergency room in a panic to get stitches. She curiously looked over to see the team leader washing his hands and preparing for the operation, and she was very anxious. However, the team leader nodded at her and smiled and told her to first recognize how to protect various precious equipment, and then learn how to answer emergency calls.
Doctor Xiao Hu responded honestly, but he was a little confused. He thought to himself that the equipment was just for use, and he had already touched and understood them during the training. Some large items could not be easily carried by two or three adults, so why did they need to be specially protected? It was not like he was going to the battlefield.
Could it be that the teacher was afraid that he would accidentally drop the video laryngoscope? No way, it's a small thing that costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, and he wouldn't want to bump it if he dropped it, that would be sheer stupidity.
As for guarding the emergency phone, anyone with hands and feet can do it. Xiao Hu was still worried about the deeper meaning of the teacher's advice, so he didn't take it too seriously. He just wanted to perform well on the first day of duty.
She took a deep breath with trepidation, but unfortunately, despite being very busy that night, nine out of ten calls to the hospital were purely for trouble.
After hanging up three drunken calls to harass the hospital, one who was said to have pressed the button accidentally while in a daze, two couples who were arguing and asking the doctor to prescribe BDSM, and one who was sneaky and trying to sell drugs, Dr. Xiao Hu was exhausted both physically and mentally.
Also, why don’t you want the red-crowned crane?
Just when I was wondering why my career was not serious, another phone call came in.
This time it was a wrong number.
The voice on the other end of the phone was that of a little girl, very young, probably only in kindergarten, with a sleepy tone in her crying voice, and she started by saying:
"Uncle police, help me."
Doctor Xiao Hu was stunned. How did the police call the hospital? But when he heard that it was such a young kid, alone and helpless, and that the case was serious, he decided to believe it. He calmed down and asked the other side where the address was, what happened, and whether the adults were around. After asking all these questions, he explained his identity.
The little girl became even more confused by her question. After a long while, she called out "sister" uncertainly. After thinking for a while, she said that she secretly got up to make the phone call because someone was dancing on the other side.
Is the person opposite dancing?
Doctor Xiao Hu was a little doubtful about his ability to understand. After years of hard study, how could he not understand what this kid was saying?
Fortunately, she was just inexperienced and not a complete fool, so she started playing music immediately and gave the nurse next to her an honest look, asking for help.
The two older nurses were much calmer, and seemed to be used to it. One of them took over, coughed dryly, and then raised her throat, and whispered a few words to calm the person on the other end of the phone. After asking carefully, I found out that the little girl was talking about the neighbor across the street.
According to the confused kid, it was late at night and there was a constant clattering sound of footsteps next door, which continued for half the night.
The little girl was a light sleeper. She rubbed her eyes and got up to see what was going on. She was like a newborn calf who was not afraid of a tiger. She actually moved a stool by herself and looked out through the peephole of the security door.
When I looked outside, it was pitch black and I couldn't see anything.
The security door of this kid's house was the old-fashioned one, with a small movable window around the peephole, only half the size of a palm. The little girl didn't think twice and stretched out her hand to open it. When she looked again, it was still pitch black, very evenly black.
The little girl was stunned when she saw this, and tried to peel it off, only to find that the outside of the cat's eye seemed to be covered with something, which blocked her vision. She poked it and found it was wet, soft but tough, as if it was cardboard with thick glue on it.
"Well, then, then..." the little girl said with difficulty. Maybe because she was in the period of changing teeth, her front teeth were a little loose. "I poked it open with scissors and saw that there was no light on the opposite side. It turned out that there was a person sitting on the doorstep."
"Oh, I mean, I mean, the door is open."
The neighbor across the street left his door open and sat in the dark in the middle of the night? And according to what the kid said before, the neighbor was walking around at one point, making noises like dancing. What the hell is going on?
Doctor Xiao Hu felt strange and a little scared. He didn't know whether to say that the kid was brave or stupid. Picking the cat's eye in the middle of the night, he was not afraid of some classic horror scene and picking out a ghost eye.
Besides, the child's description seemed a little too accurate and detailed, so she subconsciously asked, "It's so dark, how do you know there's someone sitting at the door?"
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a moment. The little girl seemed puzzled and said innocently, "Because he came over and saw me."
This was a child's innocent words, but Dr. Xiao Hu broke out in a cold sweat for no reason. She immediately lowered her voice and asked the child what else he had done and whether he had spoken to that person. "Baby," she wiped the sweat from her palm and said carefully, "No matter what, go wake up mom and dad first, just in case, let them call the police. Don't disconnect the call here, okay?"
The little girl was quite obedient and agreed to everything.
When asked about the physical features of her next-door neighbor, she was confused and couldn't describe it clearly. She only knew that when the man walked to the security door and looked at her, there were still footsteps in the dark room opposite, and the sound was very heavy and strange.
Doctor Xiao Hu was getting anxious and felt more and more uneasy. She was about to ask more questions, but the older nurse next to her frowned, held her shoulders, and silently mouthed, "Something's not right."
Another nurse stood up, covered her phone and walked slowly into the corridor. She calmly gestured that she was going to the corner to call the police, and told Dr. Xiao Hu to continue chatting, talk more and not hang up, so that the police could locate her later.
This series of reactions happened so quickly that Dr. Xiao Hu did not understand what was happening at all. He just did what he was told subconsciously. He naturally picked up the cup and drank two sips of tea. He then asked the little girl if she was thirsty and if she wanted a cup of hot water first before she could talk slowly.
The person on the other end of the phone was breathing softly, and after two seconds, he suddenly hung up.
The empty busy tone in the duty room lasted a long time. In the middle of the night, there was an indescribable ghostly and cold feeling.
Doctor Xiao Hu's heart skipped a beat and her hands and feet turned cold. She picked up the phone to call back, but the older nurse held her hand, shook her head and told her to wait.
"If she can't answer the phone now, we would be harming her if we called her," said the older nurse. The two looked at each other solemnly and both had a very bad premonition.
"Something is not right," the story came to this point. Everyone in the car who was originally drowsy looked at each other with bright eyes. Team leader Zhang Jia stroked his chin and said, "Doctor Xiao Hu, you may be confused because of the situation, but I think this kid is not honest. He avoided the important information and did not answer it."
I also said, "At the beginning, the child must have really asked for help. She knew to call the police and shouted for help. When she talked about the neighbor across the street, she spoke clearly as if she had prepared a script in advance. She was definitely not joking and couldn't tell the difference between the serious and the serious. But she was beating around the bush when asked about the following questions. I'm afraid there was already someone else next to her at that time."
Doctor Hu sighed. Now that the old story had been brought up again after so many years, she had naturally figured out many things. She said, "Yes, I didn't think much about it at the time, but later I realized that the child was really brave and resourceful. He had already said everything he needed to say. It just depended on whether we could understand it."
Wu Chou beside him also woke up, and was completely confused. He woke up late and only heard the second half. He quickly patted the wheelchair and called out "ancestor", then "aunt", and asked us what kind of riddle we were playing. No matter how mysterious and terrifying it is, don't keep us in suspense.
I explained it to him and sorted out my own thoughts, starting from the beginning, and told him not to just listen to what the little girl answered, but to see what she avoided answering.
Wu Chou thought for a moment and said hesitantly, "... Doctor Hu asked her where she lived and whether the adults at home had woken up."
I said yes, and if I didn't answer it would probably be inconvenient or impossible to answer, so I let him continue with his thought process.
Wu Chou began to figure out what was going on, and whispered, "My dear mother," "Doctor Hu asked her about the appearance of the man next door, but she evaded the question. We asked her to wake up the adults at home and call the police first, and the child promised to be a good kid, but she actually didn't do anything."
"Doctor Hu casually asked her to get a cup of hot water, but she hung up without responding!"
"She can't move? Can't leave that phone?"
Yes, I can’t tell where the person is; the adults in the house are not around or I can’t disturb them;
She clearly saw her neighbor through the door, but she didn't say a word about the other person's appearance and body shape. It is likely that she couldn't say it; the call for help happened to be made to the hospital. Couldn't she call the police?
Xu You also said simply: "She said that the neighbor has been sitting at the door, but there are still sounds of people walking around in the house, which means that there is more than one person on the other side."
"She also gave a few details: the door was open, she had a pair of scissors in her hand, and the other party came over and saw her."
"Doctor Hu, I'm afraid you misunderstood her at that time. Many of the things she said may have been literal." Xu You said.
"Let's put it another way:
A little girl is most likely without a parent or afraid to disturb the adults around her. It is dark around her, she does not know or cannot tell where she is, and cannot see the details of the house.
All she knew was that there was someone guarding the door, and there were other people walking around. The noise was loud for a long time, but it didn't seem to alarm the people upstairs and downstairs. She had a pair of scissors for self-defense and a phone at hand, but she didn't dare or couldn't call the police, and couldn't leave the phone."
“And this weird description, the cat’s eyes were covered with wet paper?”
"What do you think happened to her?"
