Chief Blackskull and Chief Claw, one old and one young, stood at opposite ends of the dueling platform, assuming combat stances and facing each other.
The Valkyries' obstruction and the indifference of his people completely extinguished Croft's will to flee. To survive, he calmed himself, his face no longer showing panic, but instead determined to fight to the bitter end.
Huggins took the dry cloth handed to him by his subordinate, wiped the bloodstains off his armor, and went to Todd's side, asking in a low voice, "Who will win between the two of them?"
“One person’s purpose in fighting is to survive, the other is for honor. I don’t think I can give you a definite answer.” Todd took a sip of the hot water in his cup. Although his words were directed at the two duelists on the field, his eyes were fixed on the Valkyries beside the dueling arena.
These female warriors were beautiful, with well-proportioned figures and not an ounce of excess fat. Their height, nearly identical to that of the men, inexplicably reminded Todd of the Victoria's Secret Angels who walked the runway in his previous life. Putting aside these conflicting thoughts, the Commander-in-Chief focused his attention on their combat capabilities.
Shooting down crossbow bolts with a bow and arrow—this archery technique, resembling something out of Arabian Nights, is simply unbelievable.
Could they really be Valkyries under the command of the gods of the Northern Islands? Is that why they gained divine power?
After a moment's thought, Todd dismissed the idea. At least since arriving in this strange world, he had never witnessed a divine manifestation. Explaining the unknowable world with idealism was not his style.
So, there's another possibility: these Valkyries are mutants, a group of mutants with special abilities.
Todd put down his water glass, touched the bridge of his nose and thought carefully, "So what kind of superpower could make someone shoot down a crossbow bolt flying at high speed?"
A gasp rippled through the crowd, interrupting Todd's train of thought.
Crofts used his shield to stir up dirt, distracting Morgan's vision, then kicked him hard in the knee. The man with the centipede-like scars on his face was severely injured and involuntarily knelt on the ground, barely managing to deflect the Claw Chieftain's attack with his shield. When he stood up again, he limped and lost his balance; the situation instantly turned unfavorable for the Blackskull tribe.
“Morgan! You and your father fled Blackskull Island like stray dogs. On the day you fled, I brought your brothers here, and on this very ground beneath your feet, I personally beheaded them!” Crofts twirled his longsword in his hand and roared, “Today, you will join their ranks!”
Morgan, his face flushed, roared and charged at Crofts, only to be tripped and knocked to the ground by the Claw Chieftain.
Huggins gripped his sword tightly, about to stand up, but Todd pressed his shoulder down.
The latter gestured for the knight to look to one side of the arena, where the silver-haired Valkyrie's gaze remained fixed, and she had nocked an arrow.
Huggins angrily lowered his sword and said to Todd, "That Crofts was so scared just now that he didn't even dare to go to the battlefield, but now he has the courage. It's really strange!"
Todd laughed and said, "People only remember their survival instinct when they are pushed to the brink of death. The Claw Chief's previous fear stemmed from the unknown about our group. Now that his opponent is Morgan, this glimmer of hope has given him courage, so none of this is surprising."
Just as Huggins and Todd were talking, the situation on the field changed again. Morgan entered berserker mode, his muscles under his skin twisting like water pipes, and his limbs swelling as if they were being injected with air.
Todd frowned when he saw this.
The experienced Crofts dodged the berserker's attacks one after another, and began to wear down Morgan's stamina by circling and running in circles.
Todd understood that at this point, he had to find a way to remind the Blackhead Chieftain of his predicament.
Feigning anger, he threw his now-cold water glass into the dueling arena, shouting, "Morgan! Fury will only take you further away from victory!"
The cold water splashed on Morgan's head, bringing him back to his senses.
Suppressing his rage, the Black Skull Chieftain considered the tactical advantages of both sides and began to use his youthful energy to wage a war of attrition against Crofts.
After an hour-long battle, the old patriarch of the Claws finally succumbed to exhaustion, and Morgan seized an opening, piercing his chest.
Crofts struggled on the ground for a while before finally ceasing to breathe. The Valkyries walked up to Todd, looking down at him.
Todd was extremely dissatisfied with his current situation. As the Grand Master of the Knights, he had to look up at the woman in front of him. However, the reason was twofold: firstly, the Valkyries of the North Island were incredibly tall, and secondly, Todd had not yet begun to grow taller.
"Chief of Twilight Town, the Claw Chieftain is dead. I must confirm that you will not harm the other Claws, otherwise my sisters and I will carve inscriptions on your tombstones with bows and swords!" The silver-haired Valkyrie took down her spear and looked at Todd.
Todd glanced at the elderly, women, and children slowly gathering around him. They raised their weapons again, and even Morgan's warriors cast hesitant glances his way. He realized that if he ordered an attack on the Valkyrie now, these people would undoubtedly protect their spiritual leader with their lives.
Todd raised the cross on his chest, nodded to the Valkyrie, and said, "The culprit who attacked Twilight Town is dead. I swear in the name of the Father that I will not harm these people."
