Chapter 168 The Hidden One

Deep in the dark alley, looking at the tightly closed wooden door, Huggins turned to the monk beside him: "Is this the place?"

The latter nodded and said in a low voice, "When registering residents, the Holy Order Arbitration Tribunal needs to match the population with the address. When we found this alley, we discovered something strange. People were going in and out of the room behind the door late at night, but no one ever claimed to live there."

The cultivator glanced at the dimly lit alley and swallowed hard. "Normally, this wouldn't have been a problem, but a few days ago, some residents said they saw people here using supernatural abilities..."

"An unregistered variant?" Harkins winked at the monk, signaling him to move away, then turned to the 'Reconnaissance Successor' beside him and asked, "What's the situation inside?"

The latter, lying prone on the door, used his X-ray vision, eagle eye, and night vision abilities to observe the space behind the door, and said, "There are two people. One is sitting at a table writing something, and the other is lying on the bed with his back to the door, so I can't see his face. They both have weapons next to them and are wearing hard leather armor."

Huggins drew his longsword, raised his shield, gestured for his men to follow him, and then kicked the door open with a bang.

With a deafening crash as the door shattered, several angry curses and shouts came from inside the room almost simultaneously.

Before Huggins could even utter a word of surrender, a mud-stone ball, thirty centimeters in diameter, hurtled through the air with a whooshing sound, slamming heavily into Huggins' shield. The immense kinetic energy dented the iron shield, scattering fragments of stone and dirt that splashed onto the knights, causing chaos.

Huggins peered through the gap in the shield. The mutant who had been sitting at the table writing a letter reached his hand into the floor. The stone slabs and dirt melted and solidified like butter meeting a hot knife, forming clumps of earth that were then hurled at them. Another mutant also got out of bed. He was a pale-faced, emaciated man. He didn't pick up a weapon or join the fight; instead, he slashed his palm with a dagger, letting the blood drip onto the ground.

Harkins' innate combat instincts made him realize that the aliens throwing the clay balls were merely trying to confuse their vision; the real threat must come from the man who was releasing blood.

"Archers! Aim at the person behind!"

Thanks to the Knights of Twilight's usual training, Huggins' orders were immediately carried out.

The soldiers aimed their already loaded crossbows at the target and pulled the triggers.

The alien creature, which used mud as its weapon, roared and plunged both hands into the earth. The mud melted and solidified at its fingertips, forming a shield that blocked the barrage of crossbow bolts and sealed off all possible angles of attack.

These two alien species have undergone rigorous military training and combat coordination...

The thought flashed through Huggins' mind, and the knight leaped up and charged toward the enemy.

The withered man's blood pooled at his feet, gradually forming a small puddle. He spoke to another person. The alien who used the earth ball attack nodded, knelt on one knee, and threw a ball mixed with blood and dirt into the middle of the intruders.

The clay ball shattered upon impact with the ground, and bloodstains and dust mingled together, forming a pale red "smoke".

As Huggins charged, he inhaled the smoke and dust, causing his body to freeze. His head felt heavy and dizzy, as if he were drunk, and his limbs felt limp and unresponsive. Terrifying hallucinations began to appear before his eyes.

The soldier closest to the center of the "blood-red smoke" had a flushed face and let out a muffled growl. Moments later, he began swinging his weapon like a madman, attacking everything that moved around him.

Soon, this violent emotion spread like wildfire throughout the ranks, and comrades who were drinking and laughing together yesterday turned against each other in the blink of an eye.

The emaciated man, pale and unsteady on his feet, had lost a great deal of blood. He grabbed his companion, who still wanted to fight, pointed outside the door, then to the ground, and shouted something urgently. A sliding door in the corner of the room was flung open by the two men, revealing an emergency escape route leading underground.

Seeing that the enemy was about to escape, Huggins mustered all his strength and staggered toward them. His blurred vision and consciousness forced him to resort to the most extreme measures to gain a moment of calm.

Reversing his longsword, Haskins slowly slit his own throat with the sharp blade. A large amount of blood rushed into his respiratory tract and gushed from the wound. The pain, which he deliberately did not suppress, made the knight's consciousness slightly clearer.

Seeing the two enemies at the escape route, Huggins tossed his longsword into the air and caught it again, then threw it with all his might, using the motion of a javelin attack.

The maximum power of the 'Dragon Bone', combined with the explosive force brought by the pain, caused the longsword to strike like a silver meteor, heavily hitting the boulder-throwing alien that hadn't yet entered the tunnel. It then smashed through the wall and flew outside the room with undiminished momentum.

The enemy, struck hard, had gaping holes in his chest and back, and collapsed to the ground without even a cry of pain. Another mutant stared in disbelief at what had happened, then gave Huggins a deep look before disappearing into the tunnel.

As the blood mist slowly settled and dissipated, the soldiers of the Twilight Knights gradually regained their composure from their frenzy. Looking at the blood on their hands and their comrades on the ground, they wept and wailed. Several corpses lay scattered on the ground, blood and severed limbs everywhere, each bearing some kind of wound.
