Chapter 248 The Gate of Darkness

A booming sound echoed throughout the hall, growing louder and louder as it approached, like ten thousand warhorses simultaneously galloping onto a battlefield or countless boulders tumbling down from the mountaintop.

The ground shook, dust billowed down from above, and Rachel lost her balance, falling to the ground along with Todd on her back. Looking at the cracks appearing in the ground, she began to wonder if, in the next second, this place would collapse into a living tomb.

Just as Rachel was filled with doubt and uncertainty, something even more astonishing happened: the cracks in the ground in front of the platform grew wider and wider. It was as if some force was dragging the floor, splitting and shrinking the entire hall's floor, revealing the true face beneath.

Rachel leaned over the edge of the platform, looking ahead, and the sight before her made her forget to breathe.

A massive black hole, thirty meters in diameter, appeared in the center of the hall. The surging seawater flowed and surged clockwise, and the water level rose higher and higher within the black hole, gradually forming a huge vortex.

Rachel's lips were bloodless. She grabbed Meredith's sleeve and asked in a trembling voice, "Could this be... this is..."

The latter nodded: "This is the 'Gate of Darkness' of the Shadow Kingdom, and also the final link in the three trials—the 'Trial of Fate'."

"You're all insane!!!"

Rachel held Todd tightly, pressing her cheek against his forehead, and stared at Scáthach and Meredith with the look of someone who had lost their mind, roaring, "This is not the entrance to the underworld! This is a whirlpool created by ocean currents! Anyone who goes in here will only die!"

Scáthach looked at the man and woman at her feet with a blank expression, as if she were watching a scene she saw every day.

Meredith crouched down beside Rachel and said calmly, “I have indeed seen many people jump from here and never return; but I swear by the name of the Old Gods, I have also seen two people return safely to the mortal world and obtain the power of the gods. And, to put it another way, at this point, he doesn’t have much time left, does he?”

Rachel shook her head vigorously, about to say something more, when the person in her arms—Todd—suddenly tugged at her sleeve.

The former leaned down and heard the latter whisper in her ear, "Ratchet, thank you..."

As soon as he finished speaking, Todd used his only intact arm to brace himself against the ground, and amidst Rachel's heart-wrenching cries, he tumbled off the platform and plunged into the endless vortex of darkness.
