The roars of wild beasts coming from the abyss started as just a few, then a group, and finally became the roar of all beasts.
The crowd lay prone on the ground and waited for a long time before the roars gradually subsided.
Vorgal stood up, waved his hand, and signaled everyone to leave the pit.
Upon reaching the outer cave hall, Todd frowned and asked him, "What are those?"
“The ancient Taro history books from a thousand years ago recorded this place as an active volcano, but the Ulster people preferred to call it the ‘Gate of Hell.’” Fugal moved his feet, looked at the crater behind him, and sighed: “No one knows how deep it is, but judging from the sounds of wild beasts, there must be countless war beasts lurking at the bottom of the abyss.”
Recalling his combat experiences, Todd asked, "War beasts? Like those mutated giant wolves?"
Vorgal first nodded, then shook his head: "Those huge monstrous wolves are indeed war beasts, but they are only the least threatening war beasts."
"In order to capture war beasts, the Kingdom of Ulster would look for some relatively good ventilation openings around the pits and mountains. They would cut up sick or dead slaves into pieces and leave them there to wait for lone war beasts to take the bait." Fugal made a fishhook shape with his hand: "It's like fishing, using flesh and blood to lure out the larger war beasts, then capturing and keeping them in captivity."
As Todd listened to Vorgal's account, his brow furrowed even more: "According to you, there's absolutely no idea what lies beneath this active volcano?"
Vorgal shrugged: "There have been warriors in the kingdom who have dived down the cliff to find out what's going on, but none of them have ever returned."
Todd sighed in disappointment. He had thought the Ulsters had mastered the method of breeding war beasts, but it turned out they were using capture as a method.
Perhaps noticing the other's disappointed expression, Fugal quickly said, "Actually, the Kingdom of Ulster has made another great discovery regarding the secrets of the war beasts."
Todd looked at him and asked, "What is it?"
Fulgari led him into the underground tunnels, navigating through a maze of forks in the path, until they finally came to a stone wall that shimmered faintly in the darkness. He raised his torch, pointed to a crevice in the wall, and said to Todd, "Look."
The latter looked as instructed and discovered that some black liquid was continuously flowing out of the stone wall.
“The Ulsters call this black water ‘the Dead Spring,’” Vorgal said in a low voice, taking a few steps back. “This black water comes from underground and is highly poisonous. Any creature, including humans, that drinks from this spring will die instantly.”
Upon hearing this, Todd seemed to realize something and a thought struck him.
"But interestingly, if a war beast drinks this spring water, it becomes even more ferocious and powerful." Vorgal continued, "But what's interesting is that if a war beast drinks this spring water, it will become even more ferocious and powerful."
Active volcanoes, war beasts, black water... By connecting these things, Todd had already formed a rough judgment.
This crater, once an active volcano, must contain a large number of 'Sutherland bacteria'. The beasts living here, eating the food and drinking the water from the surrounding area, unknowingly transformed into Inheritor-type beasts. Furthermore, since this crater is close to the Shadow Kingdom, the ocean currents brought the Tyrant Virus from near the Crystal Spire to the surface, where it seeped out from the cracks in the rocks, ultimately causing the continuous evolution of the war beasts.
Having figured all this out, Todd suddenly thought of a question: "Volgar, these war beasts you capture need flesh and blood as bait every time they are released. Haven't you ever tried to tame them?"
Fugal shook his head helplessly: "We tried to tame them as mounts and combatants, but we failed in the end. These war beasts are relatively quiet when they are with each other, but they immediately turn into bloodthirsty monsters once they encounter creatures outside the pit."
Todd suddenly caught a crucial question: "They're relatively quiet when they're together? What does that mean?"
Fugal scratched his head: "When we put the captured war beasts together, they don't fight each other. They even retain a certain degree of team communication and cooperation when facing external enemies."
Upon hearing this, Todd began to recall the scenes of his battles with the war beasts.
Whether in the arena or the barbarian camp, these war beasts do indeed have some kind of invisible communication mechanism with each other, which allows them to distinguish between friend and foe.
Todd crossed his arms and pondered deeply, wondering what the basis for mutual recognition among war beasts was.
Appearance? Smell? Sound? Or something else entirely?
Accompanied by the Alien Association, Todd, deep in thought, left the cave entrance. A creature that appeared before his eyes suddenly caught his eye.
Henry the griffin squatted on the ground, preening his feathers. When he saw Todd appear, he spread his wings and cried out.
Recalling his encounters with the Shadow Kingdom, Todd remembered that his first meetings with the griffins and manticores also began with battles. After that, the truly significant event that rendered these war beasts harmless was the completion of the soul link.
So, does that mean the soul link can eliminate the beast's aggression?
Thinking of this, Todd asked Vorgal, "Are there still any domesticated war beasts in the Ancient City?"
The latter replied, "Yes, there is a war beast breeding farm just below the cliff."
“Bring a war beast here.”
Vorgal paused for a moment, then looked at Todd again and saw that the other man's expression didn't seem like he was joking, so he nodded.
