Chapter 409 Wayne's Little Experiment

Dusk falls in the western city, in the cabinet council chamber.

Emerson flipped through the list in his hand, asking without looking up, "Is the first batch of superhuman bacteria inoculation complete?"

Wayne grunted in agreement and then began reading the report: "The first batch of recipients totaled 105 people, including 15 who received the X-ray vision ability and 21 who received the regeneration ability..."

Emerson carefully compared the numbers and then asked, "Are there any rejection reactions among those who were vaccinated?"

“Several people experienced allergic reactions.” Wayne scratched his messy hair. “One of them was a 21-year-old woman who experienced severe breathing difficulties and limb convulsions due to an allergic reaction when she was inoculated with the light-gathering bacteria. Although we did our best, we were ultimately unable to save her.”

Emerson stopped what he was doing, remained silent for a long while, and then said, "Some people have died because of the vaccination..."

Wayne said dismissively, "The development of new things always comes with necessary sacrifices. Besides, that woman deliberately concealed her family's medical history during the pre-vaccination medical examination, causing the medical staff to misdiagnose her..."

“The death of a person will cause public panic about bacterial inoculation!” Emerson looked at Wayne and said in a deep voice, “Besides, no one wants to see a life disappear like this.”

Wayne shrugged: "Prime Minister, it's your prerogative to see things this way, but this inoculation with the supernatural bacteria can be considered a perfect trial."

Emerson shook his head and said, "It's too early to be happy. The most troublesome problem is how to control ordinary people who have gained superpowers."

"Control?"

"Having power, one craves to acquire more wealth and satisfy endless desires; this is a common human failing." Emerson patted the paper in his hand: "Few can resist this temptation."

Wayne stood up from his chair: "What I care about is exploring the unknown. I have absolutely no interest in the worst aspects of human nature. The inoculation with the foreign bacteria has been completed, and my mission is done. The subsequent control work is naturally none of my concern."

Watching Wayne turn and leave, Emerson frowned and muttered to himself, "This guy always makes me a little uneasy..."

Before he could finish speaking, a knock at the door drew Emerson's attention away.

"Please come in."

Huggins pushed open the door and walked in, carrying a stack of documents, which he placed on Emerson's desk.

The latter asked with some confusion, "What are these?"

"The entire Xi'an Bureau's tracking report on those who have received superpowers." Huggins's expression wasn't too good: "His Majesty has already seen these things in the Soul Space, and he wants the Prime Minister to see them as well."

Emerson picked up a few reports, glanced at them, and his face immediately darkened.

A citizen of Muxi who was given the ability to see through objects sneaked into a casino and cheated while playing dice, winning a large sum of money; another person who was given the ability to move quickly went to the market late at night and openly robbed other people of their goods.

Emerson put down the report, sighed, and looked at Huggins, asking, "What did His Majesty say?"

“His Majesty had anticipated that something like this would happen, but he didn’t expect it to happen so quickly,” Huggins said seriously. “His intention is to have the Grand Court of the Twilight accelerate the implementation of the ‘Supernatural Ability Control Law’ and have the members of the Supernatural Association act as reviewers and supervisors to assist the Cabinet in its work.”

Emerson nodded and said, "I understand. So, according to His Majesty's wishes, should the ability inoculation continue?"

"We will continue, but we need to be more stringent in the selection and registration of those who will receive the vaccine."

——————————————

Wayne left the cabinet office area and returned to his laboratory in the port area.

He first gave himself a simple disinfection in the washroom, and then went into a completely sealed laboratory.

Sitting down at the lab table, Wayne had a glass bottle that was more than half his height in front of him. Inside, besides a special preservative liquid, was a human brain, as well as eyeballs, spinal nerves, peripheral nerves, and other tissues.

Wayne prepared a series of surgical tools and began to slice and examine the brain.

Several hours passed. Wayne stared at the brain, damaged by black, mesh-like fibers under the microscope, his head throbbing. He closed his eyes and muttered, "The Tyrant Virus can modify the human body, but it destroys human nerve tissue..."

Setting the brain specimen aside for the time being, Wayne took a roster from the bookshelf.

Turning to the first page, you see three names: Betty, Aldenan, and Carroll.

Wayne turned to the second page and wrote the following on the blank sheet of paper:

"The kingdom selected 105 people to be inoculated with the supernatural bacteria. After carefully reviewing everyone's files and comparing their physiological characteristics, I selected three people from these 105 as subjects for this experiment: Betty, Aldenan, and Carol."

"In addition to the single type of foreign bacteria inoculated into these three people, I also secretly injected a small amount of the Tyrant Virus into their bodies, without telling anyone else."

"The reason I did this is because I drew inspiration from the construction of alien warships. If the Tyrant Virus can fuse alien bacteria and parasitic cells to form a completely new and more powerful parasite, then what about humans? If we combine humans with the Tyrant Virus, could it create an even more powerful new species?"

However, the experiment did not begin smoothly. One of the three test subjects, a 21-year-old woman named Betty, died suddenly less than two hours after being inoculated with the Tyrant Virus.

"Using some special methods, I obtained Betty's body. After dissecting her brain, I discovered that while the Tyrant Virus can modify organisms, it also damages their nervous systems. Strangely, why wasn't the parasite's nervous system damaged? I have a hypothesis: the Tyrant Virus causes 'sexual' damage; the nervous system of higher organisms is its target. Because of its simple structure, the parasite's nervous system lacks a suitable environment for the virus to infest, thus allowing it to escape."

"So, here's the biggest problem! How can we make the Tyrant Virus abandon or ignore its attack on the human nervous system, thus allowing the modification of humans to proceed smoothly?"

"To be honest, I have absolutely no clue. Perhaps the two surviving test subjects—Aldenan and Carol—can provide me with the answer."

P.S.: There's something else I need to figure out how to properly handle the experimental subjects. If two more people die out of the 105 subjects, it will certainly alert the kingdom, which is something I don't want to see. —Wayne Dunlop
