“I always felt that your purpose in returning to the Presbyterian Council was not as simple as you said.”
Sabrina, sitting on the windowsill with her legs crossed, tossed the dagger in her hand and looked at Rachel, who was busy in the room, and asked him suspiciously.
Rachel opened the old book in front of her, carefully reading the words as she said, "Tell me, how did Clarence put up with your suspicions and nagging when he was with you?"
"That fool who loves watching the show?" Sabrina sighed softly, speaking with a nostalgic tone, "That guy is indeed awful, but I have to admit, once you figure out his temperament, he's actually a very easy person to get along with... Unlike you, you always give me the feeling of luring people into a trap..."
After finishing the ancient book in his hand, Rachel tossed it into the pile of books at his feet, picked up another book from the desk, and began to examine it.
“Sabrina, you and I share the same goal, isn’t that enough?” Rachel said, referring to the diagrams in her notes while quickly scribbling something with her pen. “After we achieve our goal, you and I will both be free.”
Sabrina jumped off the windowsill and took a closer look. Rachel's notebook was filled with a bunch of incomprehensible symbols and diagrams.
What are these?
Rachel closed her notebook and asked Sabrina, "Do you believe in God?"
Sabrina took a few steps back and said in a low voice, "Your question and tone make me uncomfortable."
“I don’t believe it.” Rachel patted the notebook cover and said coldly, “I only believe that everything that exists has a reasonable explanation.”
"I'm increasingly confused. What exactly are you trying to say?"
Rachel did not answer the question, but stood up and walked out.
Sabrina quickly followed, asking, "Where are you going?!"
Rachel gently opened the door a crack, pointed to the two masked servants standing in the doorway, and said to Sabrina, "Do you have a way to deal with them?"
The latter widened his eyes and said, "Take care of them?! Do you know what you're saying? These two were sent by Iliad to protect us!"
“Protection, but also surveillance.” Rachel closed the door again and turned around to say, “It seems that even though I spoke with Eliad, I still haven’t put his guard down.”
Sabrina covered her forehead and swayed: "Richie, you've completely confused me! Didn't you come here to win over Elder Eliade, help Twilight City, and get rid of Eleanor?"
As Rachel walked toward the inner bedroom, she said, "That's partly true."
Seeing Rachel kneeling on the floor, groping for something under the bed, Sabrina asked, "What did you mean just now? What do you mean by 'part of the reason'?!"
Rachel looked up and, seemingly ignoring the question, said to Sabrina, "When Mia and I were little, our favorite thing to do was play hide-and-seek. While playing, we explored every corner of this ancient palace. There are mechanisms and secret passages here that have existed for thousands of years, but no one knew about them..."
Rachel jerked her right hand upwards, and a dull thud came from underground.
With a screeching sound, the stone slabs under the bed slowly parted to the sides, eventually revealing a stone staircase hidden in the darkness.
Sabrina asked, her scalp tingling, "You've always known there's a secret passage under the bed? What's inside...?"
Rachel took out the torch she had prepared beforehand, crawled under the bed, and climbed down a few steps of the stairs.
A moment later, she turned around, poked her head out of the ground, and said to Sabrina, “This secret passage leads to the Elder Council’s greatest secret, and what’s inside is enough to completely destroy Eleanor… So, would you like to come with me?”
Sabrina stared at the dark entrance and muttered to herself in frustration, "Sometimes, I really hate my own jinx. I know it's a trap, but I just can't control my legs..."
After much hesitation, Sabrina finally resigned herself to her fate and followed Rachel into the secret passage.
The dark, damp passage led all the way underground. The stone steps were at a 45-degree angle and narrow, allowing only a sideways step.
Rachel, holding a torch, walked ahead and descended the ladder.
Sabrina followed cautiously behind her, listening to the wind rushing past her ears, and couldn't help but say, "I've lived in the council of elders for over a hundred years, and I never knew there was such a secret passage."
“Don’t even mention you, I’m afraid even the past elders didn’t know these passages existed.” Rachel said as she stepped down the stairs, “Based on my guess, these mechanisms and secret passages may have been built before the Great Purge of the Alien Species.”
Sabrina stopped in her tracks: "Do you know what you're saying? Back then, the alien races were still living peacefully in the Tero Empire, and the so-called Great Purge was still just a figment of some people's minds!"
Rachel asked in a calm, soft voice, "What if the aliens already knew about this purge plan?"
Sabrina shook her head in disbelief, saying, "You knew all along?! How is that possible?"
“I have checked the sentencing records from the ancient Tyro period. In the three years before the start of the alien purge, the Tyro Elder Council sentenced a total of 4,500 prisoners to exile. This abnormal number far exceeds the average number in previous years.”
"So, you suspect that before the purge plan, the alien leaders in the council were secretly transferring aliens out under the guise of exile?"
