To the north of the Falling Star Mountains, on a winding mountain road, dozens of black-armored knights escorted a caravan of carriages northward.
Barbara leaned out of the car window, her bright red dress, delicate features, and pointed ears making her stand out against the backdrop of the white snow.
Why don't we take a boat? Wouldn't that be faster?
Randall, sitting in the driver's seat, turned around and said with a smile, "The port is crowded and noisy; it might attract some unnecessary trouble."
Barbara said "oh" and sat back down in the carriage.
In the carriage behind Barbara, Wayne Dunlop looked at the black-armored knight sitting opposite him and swallowed hard: "Lord Alfonso..."
Alfonso, arms crossed, glanced at Wayne and said, "Save your breath. Save what you have to say for when you see His Majesty."
Wayne said in a low voice, "I don't mind being a prisoner, nor do I mind dying in jail, as long as His Majesty agrees to let me continue my experiments, I don't mind anything else..."
Hearing Wayne's words, Alfonso stared at him and asked, "You should have known long ago that His Majesty was going to take you to the north. Why didn't you escape?"
Wayne smoothed his disheveled hair with his long, slender fingers: "His Majesty knows me too well. He knows I won't run away. Because only His Majesty can answer the questions that keep me up all night; only His Majesty can build the machines that will help me further discover the mysteries of life. My lifelong pursuit and dreams can only be realized under his guidance and inspiration..."
Seeing Alfonso's noncommittal expression, Wayne said with a wry smile, "For me, what I fear more than having His Majesty imprison me by his side is that he will exile me to a distant place forever and never allow me to return. That would make my life even more miserable and hopeless."
Alfonso closed his eyes: "Remember what you're saying now. When you see His Majesty, you'll find that lies are as fragile as snow under the scorching sun in his presence."
Aldenan, perched on the roof of the carriage, basked comfortably in the sun while glancing sideways at the vigilant guards around him.
“Carol, look at the way these people are looking at us. It’s a miracle that we’re not shackled! Aren’t they worried that we’ll run away?”
The orc, sitting alone in the carriage, heard his companion's voice and said in a muffled voice, "You can give it a try."
Aldenan shook his head and chuckled, "I bet these knights are thinking the same thing... But I'd better stay put. I've seen the speed of those horses, and I've seen the power of those black tentacles..."
Sitting in the carriage, Carol stretched out her hands to her eyes and said calmly, "Look at us. Is there any place that would accept us? Rather than living like savages in the wilderness and hiding like rats in the streets, I would rather go to a place that will take us in."
Aldenan let out a drawn-out nasal sound, gripped the edge of the carriage with both hands, and stuck his head upside down into the carriage, looking at Carol and laughing: "Your language skills have improved a lot, is it because of those love poem textbooks?"
"roll!"
After crossing the Falling Star Mountains, the convoy traveled north for three days and three nights.
In the early hours of the fourth day, after cleaning up the traces of their campsite, the team set off northward again.
As the journey progressed, the forest grew so dense that the sunlight could not be seen overhead, and the clear roars of wild animals could be heard from time to time in the wind.
Suddenly, Aldenan climbed onto the top of the carriage, stood up, pricked up his ears, and sniffed hard.
Carol opened the car door and saw the werewolf looking like he was facing a great enemy. She asked, "What's wrong?"
“There’s a smell in the air, the smell of wild animals,” Aldenan said, puzzled. “Lion? Leopard? No… I’ve never smelled this before.”
Before the words were even finished, the horses pulling the carriage began to stir restlessly, pawing at the ground with their hooves and shaking their heads uneasily.
Barbara, dressed in a light red hunting outfit, walked to the passenger seat of the carriage, stood next to Randall, and asked in a low voice, "What's going on?"
“This is the road I took south. Everything was normal when I set off, and nothing happened.” Randall drew his sword and said quietly, “But so many months have passed, and no one can guarantee that something might happen along this road.”
Upon hearing this, Barbara nodded, and the light blue tattoos on her body slowly brightened. She raised her arms slightly, palms facing upwards, and two blazing fireballs tumbled rapidly in her hands.
Just as the group was on edge, a huge figure leaped out of the forest and appeared before them.
Upon seeing the figure's true form, Barbara's eyes widened, her jaw involuntarily agape in utter astonishment: "This thing is... a wolf?! But what's with its size?! It's enormous!"
A giant wolf, over eight meters long, stood in front of the convoy, warily watching the uninvited guests.
Its sharp claws, like long knives gleaming with a cold light, can easily cut down a tree as thick as a basin; its crimson mouth contains a set of sharp teeth the size of a pointed hammer, capable of effortlessly crushing hard rocks.
Looking at the behemoth before him, Aldenan gasped and whispered to Carol, "According to the rumors among the sailors of Twilight City, this thing should be the legendary war beast of the Northern Lands! Just one! Just one! Could wipe out the entire army of a minor lord!"
