The people of Muxi City felt their souls being ripped from their bodies, rising continuously until they finally arrived at a pure land above the clouds.
There, there is no sun or stars, but everything is as bright as day, and the warm light shelters every soul like the winter sun.
There is a huge city, perched high in the clouds.
From afar, the light emanating from that city was brighter than anything else in the world. It was like an extremely expensive gem, shining so brightly that it was impossible to look directly at it.
Emerson followed the people of Muxi City, subconsciously walking towards the city, as if an unknown force was calling him forward.
As he got closer to the city, he heard shouts coming from the crowd.
"Look there! Look at those people!"
Emerson looked in the direction of the sound and saw a large procession leading the citizens of Muxi City.
The group marched in neat rows towards the Sky City.
Upon closer inspection, Emerson noticed that many of these people were familiar faces.
Some were heroes who died protecting their country during riots, some were soldiers who chose to betray their country for money, and others were pirates and mercenaries who were killed and executed.
And the pirate king, Barbarossa, was positioned at the very front of the entire group.
Emerson quickly realized who the group of people were; they had all died in the last two days.
After guessing the identities of the group, many citizens of Muxi City quickened their pace and ran towards the city, wanting to find out where the dead had gone.
As he ran closer to the city, Emerson looked up, panting, and discovered that the city walls were made of jade, and the streets made a crisp sound when stepped on. Upon closer inspection, he realized that all the paving stones were cast from refined gold.
The city wall has twelve foundations, each bearing the name of one of the twelve apostles from the Bible, and each foundation is decorated with a different gemstone.
The entire city stretches for over four thousand miles on each side, with three gates in each of the four cardinal directions. Above the twelve gates, countless angels soar through the sky, their heads adorned with holy halos, wings of light emerging from their backs, and their bodies clad in holy armor formed from solidified light. They observe everything on the ground.
Emerson followed the dead to a gate in the west city, where he watched as a female angel with wings sprouted from her back slowly descended to the ground.
The devout believers among the citizens, with tears streaming down their faces, knelt on the ground, overwhelmed with emotion, and loudly recited hymns of praise.
The female angel was otherworldly and ethereal, yet her face emitted a blinding light, obscuring her true features.
She walked up to the dead man and said, “This is God’s holy place. There will be no more night or curse. No unclean dead person, or who has done anything abominable or deceitful, shall enter this city. Only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life shall enter.”
Following behind the female angel and the procession of the dead, Emerson and many other citizens of Twilight City slowly walked toward the city gates.
Under the watchful eyes of numerous angels of varying appearances and attire, this group of souls from Twilight City finally arrived at the vast square in front of the city gate.
A four-winged archangel, almost the same size as the city gate, stood before the gate, holding a thick book in one hand and a huge scale aloft in the other. As the procession of the dead approached, he announced, "The trial begins."
Emerson watched as a legion commander of the Twilight Knights slowly floated into the air and approached the four-winged angel from among the ranks of the dead.
“That’s Ennis.” Emerson looked at the commander’s face and murmured, “If I remember correctly, he was the last one in the Knights to fight against the rebels.”
The four-winged archangel opened the book, and scenes from Ennis's life unfolded in the book like a slideshow.
His helpfulness, his dedication to duty, and his unwavering piety all came back to life as the pages of the book were turned.
Meanwhile, the scales in the archangel's other hand swayed and rocked incessantly as the pages of the book were turned.
The scene of Ennis being assassinated from behind by a traitor on the night of the rebellion in Twilight became the final lament of his life.
As this scene slowly turned gray, the scales stopped swinging, and the pan finally tilted towards the side of good.
The four-winged archangel glanced at the scales and said softly, "The trial is over. You may enter the city."
Ennis nodded blankly, his body floating in the air, drifting forward past the souls on the ground, entering the light of the city gate and disappearing without a trace.
He has entered heaven!
Some citizens of Muxi City murmured their praises, and almost everyone knelt down, clasped their hands together, and silently prayed towards the city gate.
The angels, oblivious to all this, maintained order in the procession while choosing the next person to be judged.
"Barbarossa Hayreddin."
The burly pirate king was brought out of the dead by the angels and led before the archangel.
Barbarossa's life story, presented as a slideshow on a book held by the archangel, caused the scales to sway incessantly.
Upon seeing the images appearing in the book, everyone present screamed in terror.
Looting cities, selling slaves, massacring prisoners, attacking merchant ships... Barbarossa spent his life in violence and killing; his hands were stained with blood, and his body was surrounded by the corpses of the dead.
