The change happened too quickly.
The woman, who was just moments ago weak, has transformed into a man-eating monster in the blink of an eye.
Before anyone could react, the woman swallowed the flesh and blood in her mouth, then opened her bloody mouth again, and with a crisp crunch, bit open the soldier's throat with a second bite. Large amounts of blood bubbles gushed from the soldier's mouth; his limbs convulsed, and blood splattered onto the ground beneath him.
Alfonso reacted first, jerking to his feet and lunging forward several steps. His greatsword sparked as it sliced through the stone ground, unleashing a perfect crescent slash from below. A flash of cold light, splattered crimson blood, and the monster's head flew into the air.
With a thud as something heavy fell to the ground, the camp returned to silence.
A church guard stumbled and crawled to the soldier's side. The soldier's increasingly weak breathing and gradually cooling body made him turn around and shake his head.
With a barely audible sigh, Alfonso slowly walked to the monster's corpse, followed by his entourage.
Walton kicked the headless body, tilted his head, and asked his companion, "Leslie, in your opinion, is this woman a mutant?"
The boy with red markings on his forehead knelt down to examine the area, and after thinking for a moment, said, "It doesn't look like it."
The knight, sword in hand, found the woman's severed head in the camp and turned it over with his toe. Todd approached and, by the firelight, noticed something strange at the junction of the cervical vertebrae. Not only blood and nerve fluid were oozing out, but also something dark and murky. Curious, he crouched down to examine it closely. After seeing what it was, he felt a chill run down his spine and recoiled.
That wasn't some light black liquid at all; it was clearly countless tiny black insects condensed together!
Leslie walked up behind Todd and, upon seeing this, looked surprised. He then went to the knight's side and whispered something urgently.
The priest, who was a little closer, heard the words "puppet" and "relief society".
With his two swords clasped behind his back and his body facing the town, Alfonso said to his men, "You stay here and guard the carriage."
Upon hearing this, the short, stout man Walton and the woman in white robes Adelina immediately objected: "Boss, we want to go too!"
“You can’t help.” The knight moved his feet, only to find Leslie blocking his way.
"What about me? Surely I can help."
After a moment's thought, the man hidden behind the iron mask nodded and agreed to the boy's request.
To his surprise, Todd and Karin also came to his side and asked to come along. Perhaps he remembered something, he eventually agreed to let the two of them come with him.
The four of them packed their belongings, walked out of the camp gate, and headed towards the town engulfed in flames and wailing.
If Todd and Karin hadn't been here before, they would never have recognized that the scene before them belonged to Watchtower, a town famous for its tourism and food.
Overturned tables and chairs blocked the town's roads, and the scorching flames ignited the quiet garden. Dark red pools of blood and scattered human remains on the ground reminded visitors that a series of tragedies had recently occurred here.
As we walked, we could hear no human voices and see no one in sight. The streets were eerily quiet, with only the crackling of flames providing the sole background noise.
After turning a few corners in the alley and walking uphill for five minutes, the tall and majestic figure of Watchtower appeared in the distance at the edge of the town.
“If we can get there and find the guards inside, we’ll be relatively safe,” Todd told the others.
Shh!
Alfonso suddenly put his finger to his lips, gesturing for everyone to look up.
Karin turned to the side, looked up at the roadside, gasped, and opened her eyes wide in shock at what she saw.
A corpse was hung on a tree like stored food. Two people covered in blood squatted on the branches, their heads buried in the corpse's chest and abdomen. The harsh gnawing and swallowing sounds were chilling.
The knight took a step back, intending to find another way around the area. But then he noticed the priest behind him patting his shoulder heavily and pointing to both sides of the group.
Two groups of slow-moving infected individuals approached from above and below the slope, sandwiching the four-person team in the middle.
As danger drew closer, Todd's temples throbbed.
We're surrounded!
Alfonso turned around and began to survey the surrounding terrain. A small commercial street built on a hillside cliff path, with trees planted along the cliff on one side and rows of sturdy houses on the other, left him with nowhere to retreat or hide.
He turned and walked to the nearest house, touching the building's structural components. The walls were a mix of brick and stone, and the door was made of hard pine. He took a few steps back, positioned one shoulder against the door, and with a running start, slammed into it. The loud impact echoed through the street, and the small house shook slightly from the force.
but!
The door couldn't be forced open!
Todd peered through the crack in the door and finally understood why: behind the door, a steel bolt was embedded in the wall and the back of the door, firmly securing the door panel.
The priest clicked his tongue in astonishment. Wasn't it said that people in the past didn't pick up lost items on the road and didn't lock their doors at night?! What's the meaning of putting such a huge iron rod behind the door?!
The sound of the door being rammed attracted the monsters' attention, and roars echoed all around. Enemies at both ends of the road quickened their pace, and the two creatures feeding in the trees jumped down and pounced on the squad, the situation gradually deteriorating.
