Alfonso ran in the lead, followed closely by Leslie, Todd, and Karin. The constant clanging of metal made him anxious and reminded him of Wilder's words.
"The drawbridge of Watchtower is controlled by a room called the Winch Room, which contains four enormous winches, each wound with an iron chain. These four chains work together to hold up the drawbridge. If all four winches are destroyed, the drawbridge will be lowered completely, creating a bridge across the ravine. The barbarians from the north will then be able to use this bridge to storm Watchtower. At that point, it will be all over..."
A sharp cracking sound made everyone's ears tighten; the first iron chain had broken.
"Faster!" Alfonso, carrying his greatsword, waved to the people behind him.
Running along the city wall toward the source of the sound, Todd began to analyze the entire incident from beginning to end.
This small-town outbreak, which looked like a terrorist attack targeting residents, was actually a meticulously planned invasion.
First, they used parasites to create chaos in the town and weaken the forces at Watchtower Fortress; then, they used the "puppets" gathered at the south gate to attract the guards' attention; next, they changed control, ordering the corpses of the castle's defenders to attack the remaining defenders; finally, taking advantage of a lull in the fighting inside the fortress, they sneaked into the winch room, cut the chains, lowered the drawbridge, and allowed the barbarians from the north to enter the fortress.
Just as they were thinking this, another piercing cracking sound came from afar, making everyone realize something.
