With all his might, Carol held the tower shield firmly against the front while shouting, "Maintain the line! Maintain the line! Don't let a single undead crawl over!"
The dense horde of corpses crashed against the shield formation, looking from above like a thin breakwater blocking a tsunami in a storm.
Aldnan, the werewolf, stood on tiptoe and raised his body, like a hunter searching for prey, his eyes wide as he stared at the surging undead outside the shield wall.
He suddenly raised the crossbow, put his finger on the trigger, and shouted, "Thirty meters ahead, Swift Alien Undead!"
A crossbow bolt shot out with a gust of wind, accurately piercing the freak's forehead.
He threw the crossbow in his hand behind him and then reached out and took the second crossbow from Carol's back.
Aldenan raised the second crossbow, about to continue searching for the next target, when he suddenly noticed movement behind him.
Turning his head, the werewolf saw a human soldier trembling and at a loss for what to do.
"Idiot! How long are you going to stand there like that?!"
The human soldiers, as if waking from a dream, hurriedly picked up the crossbows on the ground and began to load them with arrows in a flurry of activity.
More and more undead are surging outside the shield wall, piling up on top of each other, some even climbing up the tower shield to the very top of the shield.
Carroll picked up the giant axe, aimed at a dead hound climbing up, and swung it in a wide arc, cutting it in two.
The spearmen standing behind the shield wall also moved forward, stabbing down the undead climbing above the shield formation.
Carol wiped the parasites crawling all over his face with his arm and shouted to the orc heavy infantryman beside him, "As in pre-battle training, one round every half minute, retreat five steps to leave space!"
Aldnan fired another crossbow bolt, pinning a stone-skinned undead to the ground, and shouted to Carol, "Left front, eleven o'clock, seventy meters, spherical undead!"
Upon hearing this, a human squadron commander rang the bell at his waist: "Grenadiers! Weight seventy! High trajectory!"
A group of soldiers in light armor picked up tools similar to slings, filled them with small, fully encased spores, and then swung the ropes to throw them out with force.
With each parabola-like trajectory, the spore parasites fell into the horde of corpses in front of the shield wall, and the shockwaves from the violent explosions made the entire defensive line shake violently.
After the explosion, Carroll immediately felt that the pressure from in front of the shield wall had decreased significantly.
He caught his breath and said to his orc comrade beside him, "Raise the shield wall, prepare to retreat!"
As soon as he finished speaking, a sharp bone spike shot out from the horde of corpses, pierced through the tower shield, and pierced directly into the head of the orc in front of Carol.
As he watched his orc comrade slowly fall to the ground, Carol's eyes widened, as if he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
Aldnan's warning rang out at that moment: "A new type of undead covered in bone spurs is approaching!"
Carol dropped his giant axe, watched his orc comrade slowly slump to the side, grabbed the tower shield next to him that was about to collapse, and shouted to Aldnan, "Kill that guy!"
The werewolf raised the crossbow, took aim, and fired the bolt, but the bone spike necromancer was extremely fast and dodged the bolt by turning to the side.
With only two hands, Carol struggled to support the two tower shields, using all her strength to desperately resist the onslaught of the undead outside the shield wall.
Aldnan raised another crossbow bolt, looked up, and saw that the bone spike undead had gotten within twenty meters of the shield wall.
The bone-spiky undead dodged round after round of crossbow bolts and the attacks of more than a dozen spears, climbed up the shield wall, and jumped directly into the defensive line eight meters away from Carol and Aldenan.
Seeing the Bone Spike Necromancer break through the shield wall and jump into the crowd, but not take any offensive action, just lying motionless on the ground, Aldenan subconsciously sensed something was wrong.
Dropping the crossbow, Aldenan yanked Carol to the ground, yelling, "Get down!"
In an instant, the bone spikes on the Bone Spike Necromancer's body shot out in all directions like a rain of flowers, instantly turning the space within a radius of several meters around it into a death zone.
Bone spikes carrying immense kinetic energy can easily penetrate steel and flesh; only multi-layered composite dragon bone armor can offer any degree of protection.
Under such attacks, a large number of orcs and humans fell instantly.
Carroll stared in disbelief at everything in the distance, then suddenly turned to look in the direction of the defensive line.
The collapse of one shield triggered a chain reaction, tearing a huge gap in the entire defensive line.
Thousands of undead swarmed in from the rift and began slaughtering all living beings before them.
An orc commander dropped his shield, completely abandoning his defense. He wielded his axe with both hands, disregarding his own life, and slashed down dozens of undead. However, he was held back by even more undead and was eventually tackled to the ground, dismembered, and devoured.
Having witnessed all of this, Carol got up and let out a deafening roar. He kicked the charging undead to the ground, then picked up the giant axe and tried to rush forward to join the battle.
Aldenan grabbed him: "Are you crazy? The defense can't hold! Did you hear me?! The defense has already fallen!"
Carol shoved Aldenan aside, strode over the pile of corpses, swung his giant axe, and cleaved one undead in two from head to toe. Then, with a punch, he smashed the head of another undead to pieces.
