Seeing the beacon tower begin to activate, Todd knew that time was running out.
He signaled to Evie, then flapped his dragon wings and charged at full speed toward Sutherland.
As Todd rapidly approached, Sutherland used his limbs to contact the beacon tower while extending the enormous parasitic tentacles from his body, lashing out at the attacker like whips.
“If I wanted to kill you, I would have a thousand ways to do it,” Sutherland’s voice boomed. “You should learn to accept your fate instead of fighting against God.”
Todd opened his massive maw, and the flames he spewed out instantly filled the entire space in front of him.
However, these parasitic tentacles, which resembled steel cables, did not react to the attack of flames and continued to lash out at Todd.
With a sound like metal shattering, the dragon scales and blood on Todd's body scattered like petals fluttering in the air.
The excruciating pain in his body caused Todd to roar. He stopped charging and could only barely parry Sutherland's attacks with his body and dragon wings.
Sutherland's voice rang out again: "Through countless cycles of reincarnation, I have slowly learned a lesson—there must be sacrifice for redemption..."
"The idea of saving everyone in situations of scarce resources or harsh environments is naive and unrealistic."
"Only by selecting the strongest and wisest individuals and ensuring their survival can we guarantee that the flame will continue."
Sutherland shifted closer to Todd, his voice filled with emotion: "In the age of the gods, I made that same mistake, which brought about the destruction of my people. Now, I will not repeat it..."
Torn wings were covered in lacerations, and there wasn't a single patch of intact skin on his body. Todd barely managed to support himself as he flew through the air.
He growled breathlessly, "Who lives and who dies is not something you or I can decide... It all depends on the laws of nature. In the end, you're just using so-called reason to cover up your selfishness!"
Sutherland's countless eyes were fixed on Todd's figure as he whispered, "When you become a god, you will understand everything I've said."
Just then, Evie, who had been lurking on Todd's back, suddenly sprang up.
She charged up the dragon's spine, stepped onto the parasitic tentacles that resembled steel cables, and, spear in hand, raced toward Sutherland's true form.
Using her time-slowing ability, Evie dodged Sutherland's layers of tentacles and limbs.
Taking advantage of the latter's unpreparedness, Ivy leaped up, arching her body backwards, gripping the spear tightly with both hands, the spearhead pointing downwards.
Using all her strength, Evie rammed straight into Sutherland's chest, and the spear also pierced a gap between the carapaces, the tip of the spear going in five centimeters.
Enraged, Sutherland slammed a limb as thick as a steel bar into Evie's body, sending her flying like a kite with a broken string.
"You lowly servant!"
"When the gods were in power, you were nothing more than a bunch of slaves who poured wine and did chores!"
"How dare you point your weapon at its original owner!"
The vicious words came from Sutherland's mouth as he raised his limbs toward Evie, poised to deliver a fatal blow.
Todd flew at full speed, caught the falling Evie, and shielded her with his body.
Sutherland stared at Todd and said in a deep voice, "This is your weakness. You risked your life for a servant..."
Todd said coldly, "She is no longer your servant, and you would never understand the value of life."
Sutherland stared at Todd for a long while before finally saying, "You should be glad you're still useful to me."
After saying this, Sutherland turned around and continued to use his limbs to activate the beacon tower.
Covered in wounds, Todd carried Evie as they struggled to fly to a protruding platform inside the cave.
Carefully putting Evie down, Todd, despite the pain in his body, knelt down to examine her wounds.
Evie's chest was completely sunken in, and the irregularity of her skin surface clearly showed that her ribs were broken and dislocated.
Todd used his X-ray vision to look at Evie's body. Her bodily functions had been severely damaged, but fortunately, vital organs such as her brain and heart were still functioning normally.
Evie: "Sorry... I couldn't..."
Todd shook his head, signaling Evie to be quiet, and said in a low voice, "Don't blame yourself, you've done very well."
Evie struggled to turn her head and look in Sutherland's direction.
Blue light filled the air, and a faint metallic resonance could be heard.
Ivy said softly, "I couldn't stop him..."
Todd looked at Sutherland and tried to flap his dragon wings, attempting to launch another attack.
The tears in his dragon wings and the wounds all over his body caused him to stumble and fall to the ground, unable to fly any longer.
Todd's claws gripped the ground tightly, leaving several clear scratch marks on the hard rock, his crimson-gold dragon eyes filled with resentment and hatred.
Suddenly, the ripples on the surface of the beacon tower grew larger and larger, even spreading to the entire tower.
A tiny crack appeared in the very center of the ripples and slowly expanded at a speed visible to the naked eye.
Ultimately, a circular black hole with a radius of less than one meter appeared on the surface of the beacon tower.
The originally faint metallic resonance suddenly grew louder, gradually drowning out all the surrounding noise.
Sutherland stretched out the limbs of the parasites, passing through the black hole in the beacon tower and penetrating directly into the tower's interior.
