Chapter 678 Old Friend

Marcus carefully picked up the dagger, gently stroking the patterns on it, muttering something indistinctly.

Rachel lowered her head and whispered to Karin, "He seems to still retain human memories, but he just doesn't know how to express them."

Karin turned her head and said, "That means he's not dangerous, right?"

Rachel shook her head and said, "No, in my opinion, his behavior is more like that of an immature child who could change his temperament at any moment over a small matter. I don't think that's a safe sign."

Karin said, "In my memory, Marcus was like a gentle and humorous older brother, always loyal and patient with his friends."

Rachel closed her eyes, then opened them again and said, "Todd told me that the testing on Marcus should continue."

Karin: "Continue testing? How?"

Rachel made a gesture, and the knights quickly chased away the onlookers, clearing a path.

Leading Marcus toward the monastery's cemetery, Rachel used her telekinesis to open a hidden tunnel door in the cemetery, revealing a long, sloping passageway.

Without needing anyone to urge him, Marcus crouched down and entered the doorway, stepping into the dark and long passageway.

He knew every corner of the passageway by heart, and even every pothole on the ground was as familiar as if they were his own.

At the end of the passageway, a large door gleaming with metallic luster appeared before Marcus.

These four sentences are engraved on the door.

"As if it were inside;"

"As if they were abroad;"

"As if it were above;"

"As he is below."

Marcus reached out a trembling hand and slowly pushed open the door.

The statue of the Father stands tall at the head of the underground sanctuary, the dim firelight filling the space with a faint warmth.

An elderly man with white hair and beard, dressed in a gray monk's robe, smiled as he looked at Marcus as he entered the room and said slowly, "You've finally returned."

Marcus stood frozen in place, looking at the old man in disbelief.

The old man said reproachfully, "Did you sneak off somewhere to play again? It took you so long just to deliver a letter to Watchtower."

Marcus opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

A smile returned to the old man's face: "Never mind, it's good that you're back safe and sound, Marcus."

Marcus knelt down, finally managing to squeeze out a single word through a sob: "Father..."

The old man vanished in an instant, like grains of sand blown into the sky by the wind, leaving no trace.

Rachel, who hadn't seen any old man or noticed anything unusual from beginning to end, looked at Marcus kneeling on the ground and muttered to herself, "Perhaps Todd is right."

A figure emerged from a corner of the room, leaning on a cane, looking at the enormous Marcus with suspicion and uncertainty.

The figure stepped into the firelight; it was none other than Huggins.

Huggins walked around to Rachel and asked in a low voice, "Are you sure...?"

Rachel nodded: "I'm sure, it's Marcus."

"He's a necromancer," Huggins said in a low voice.

Rachel: "Strictly speaking, he is different from those undead outside. According to Theodore's notes, he was the only one who survived among the first batch of test subjects converted into undead successors."

"After him, the process of necromancy was gradually perfected, which led to examples like the throat bone and Myris being transformed into perfect necromancy."

Huggins stared at Marcus's back: "So, Marcus is the first undead, but because the transformation wasn't perfect, he has physical and mental defects?"

Rachel: "That's right."

Huggins asked hesitantly, "So what exactly does Your Majesty intend to do...?"

Ritchie: "Todd wanted to test how much humanity Marcus still had, and whether there was any possibility of cooperation."

Huggins glanced at Marcus again, then turned to the corner and said, "What are you hiding for? Come out, all of you."

Soon, three people walked out from the other end of the room.

They are Edgar and Raglan, a married couple.

These people present were all members of the San Sidlow Abbey gathering and also old acquaintances of Marcus.

Even with his goatee, Edgar still lacked any semblance of composure.

He picked up a twig, intending to try poking the motionless Marcus.

Huggins stopped him in time and pulled him to the corner.

The Ragrens, with trembling little steps, huddled against the wall among the knights, refusing to come out even a step further.

Faced with all this, Huggins sighed helplessly and turned to say, "His Majesty only sent us, but what should we do now?"

Rachel, who had been observing Marcus closely, said, "Actually, you don't need to do anything, just stand here."

Huggins asked, puzzled, "Standing here? But..."

Before he could finish speaking, Huggins noticed that Marcus had actually stood up and was walking straight toward him.

Harkins assumed a defensive stance, ready to run away at any moment, but Marcus simply stood in front of him without making any further moves.

Marcus scrutinized Huggins' face for a long time, then said haltingly, "Bread...Master..."

Huggins smiled wryly at Rachel, who looked puzzled, and said, "Marcus used to give me a nickname because I always carried food with me..."
