Amidst the rousing war drums, Ackerman rose to his feet, climbed to the watchtower on the city wall, and shouted to the Crusaders behind him, "Heavy infantry, advance! Prepare for battle!"
Fully armed orcs and tauren, carrying their tower shields, strode heavily up the city wall and firmly wedged the hooks at the bottom of their shields into the slots in the wall.
Ackerman knelt behind the tower shield, peering through the observation holes between the shields at the approaching undead army below the city wall. He took a deep breath and shouted, "Dragon God above! For my king!"
"By the Dragon God! For the sake of our King!"
Amidst shouts echoing across the battle lines, the undead finally reached the city walls and engaged the Crusaders in close combat.
Looking down from the sky, the "black sea" composed of the undead stirred up a surging tsunami, crashing against the white city walls and dikes, and was firmly stopped outside.
A charred and mangled undead bear crashed into the tower shield, causing the shield to creak.
Ackerman picked up the spear beside him and stabbed it forcefully into the belly of the undead bear.
Unexpectedly, the undead bear completely ignored the spear's damage and instead slapped the spear in half.
Just then, a long sword pierced directly into the bear's mouth and emerged from the back of its head.
Ackerman turned around and saw Randall, clad in dragonbone armor, sheathing his longsword and nodding at him.
Carroll, wielding a giant axe, chopped off the head of a necromancer that had climbed onto the tower shield and shouted to Ackerman, "Watch out for that spiky guy!"
Ackerman asked, puzzled, "A thorny thing?"
Aldenan, holding a crossbow, squatted down next to Ackerman and pointed at a gray-blue figure on the battlefield, saying, "See that thing?"
Ackerman stared intently and saw a monster with a human head but the limbs of a wild beast.
It has no hair on its body, but is covered with dense white spikes, making it look like an agile hedgehog.
The undead crawled to the front of the shield wall, crouched down and straightened its back. A bone spike shot through the tower shield like a cannonball and embedded itself in the shoulder of the orc behind the shield.
Ackerman snapped to attention, quickly drew his bow and shot an arrow at the Bone Spike Necromancer.
He hadn't expected his opponent to be so agile, leaping into the air and narrowly dodging the arrow.
With a soft exhale, Ackerman drew his bow again, aimed at the Bone Spike Necromancer, and fired three arrows in quick succession.
The Bone Spike Necromancer dodged the first arrow, but unable to dodge in mid-air, it was pinned to the ground by the next two arrows.
Aldenan clapped his hands: "Excellent archery!"
Ackerman looked at the bone spike undead lying motionless on the ground and secretly breathed a sigh of relief. He then turned his attention to hunting down these high-ranking undead.
This close-quarters defensive battle lasted a full forty minutes.
When the last undead fell in front of the shield wall, Ackerman looked at the empty quivers scattered around his feet, and collapsed onto the ground, exhausted and covered in sweat.
Carroll looked at his battle axe, which was now badly damaged and dented, wiped the blood from his face, and let out a long sigh.
Aldnan climbed to the top of the tower, looking at the undead remains scattered throughout every corner of the battlefield. He stroked the tangled hair on his chin and muttered to himself, "Four hundred thousand eliminated? No, at least five hundred thousand..."
Randall, sitting on the ground and leaning against the city wall, wiped the bloodstains off his sword when he suddenly heard the faint sound of an explosion still coming from the east.
Is the war on the Eastern Front not over yet?
With these worries in mind, Randall was about to stand up when he suddenly heard the sound of horns ringing out from the tower once again.
What happened?!
Randall and Ackerman looked at each other in bewilderment.
Aldenan, who was standing on the top of the tower taking stock of the battlefield, was suddenly startled by a scene in the distance and fell down.
He shouted, "They're here again! They're everywhere!"
Ackerman quickly flipped over and climbed up the tower, looking into the distance with wide eyes.
On the far southern plains, even more undead are marching toward Twilight City.
They were so numerous and overwhelming that they stretched as far as the eye could see, their scale being several times larger than the previous attack.
