Twilight City, Wayne's secret laboratory.
Hearing the shrill screams coming from inside the door, Aldenan continued gnawing on a raw lamb leg without a care, while Carol, squatting on the ground, covered her ears with her hands.
Aldnan handed the half-eaten food to the orc and asked, "Want some?"
Looking at the bloody raw flesh in front of him, Carol shook his head listlessly.
Aldnan leaned against the corner of the wall, squatted down next to Carol, and nudged him with his elbow.
Carol looked annoyed: "What?"
"Thanks for that time in the woods..."
"Huh? Which time?"
Aldnan rolled his eyes: "You jumped out and knocked that soldier over!"
Carroll recalled that scene, first nodding slightly, then waving his hand weakly, indicating that the other party didn't need to worry about it.
Aldenan said with a smile, "At that time, I thought you had already run far away."
Carol glared at him: "How could I run away when my friend is in danger?!"
Aldenan blinked in surprise, then nodded and said nothing more.
A werewolf and an orc squatted side by side in the cold underground passage, listening to the screams coming from the door beside them, each lost in their own thoughts.
After about ten minutes, the sounds in the room grew fainter and fainter until they became completely silent. A little while later, the sound of bottles and jars being smashed and Wayne's furious roar came from inside the room.
Aldenan and Carroll exchanged a glance, both looking somewhat tense, because they knew that the experiment had failed once again.
Hesitantly pushing open the door, Aldenan put on an innocent smile: "Mr. Dunlop, is there anything we can help with..."
"Damn it! Why? Why?!"
An expensive glass flask shattered against the stone wall beside the gate with a crisp, loud cracking sound.
Wearing a blood-stained lab coat, Wayne clutched his hair and screamed hysterically, "The reagent formula hasn't changed at all! Temperature! Humidity! Everything is the same! Why is my nervous system still being destroyed by the virus?!"
Carroll followed behind Aldenan and glanced into the room. The gruesome sight of flesh and blood on the operating table terrified him, and he closed his eyes tightly.
After venting his anger, Wayne looked at the two people at the door and immediately lost the will to shout. He sat down in a chair dejectedly and looked at the ceiling of the laboratory.
Aldnan pulled Carol into the lab, standing cautiously beside Wayne, looking around for a topic to discuss.
Seeing a book spread out on the table, Aldenan glanced at it and asked in a low voice, "Mr. Dunlop, I've never seen the words in this book before. They look like a series of squares."
"That script is called Chinese, a language from the realm of the gods... Just recalling it and copying this book took me two whole months." Wayne glanced at the werewolf and said coldly, "Stop looking. You can't even write Common Tongue, and you expect to understand Chinese?"
Aldenan chuckled awkwardly.
Wayne sat in his chair and sighed deeply. "Sometimes I really wish I could find a worthy partner in academic research. But those who are capable don't recognize my research; and those who do recognize it can't understand it."
Aldenan chimed in, “Mr. Dunlop, you are the most brilliant scholar I have ever met! If your research succeeds, the entire kingdom… no, the whole world will tremble at your feet…”
Before Aldenan could finish speaking, he noticed Wayne looking at him like he was an idiot.
"I...did I say something wrong...?"
Wayne held up two fingers: "You're wrong about two things. First, there are many people smarter than me, but there's only one I truly admire and respect: the King of Twilight City. All my current achievements are thanks to his research. Compared to him, I'm like an infant standing before a giant."
"Second, I have no interest in conquering this world... Becoming the master of this world would bring me no benefit whatsoever. What I care about is the completion of the human form."
Aldnan asked in confusion, "Human form?"
"When God created humankind, He used clay and bones. Although He endowed us with intelligence, He gave us a terrible physical body."
Wayne pointed to the disemboweled corpse on the operating table and said loudly, "Look at humans! Skin, muscles, nerves—doesn't everything represent vulnerability?! Floods, plagues, fires... even a minor cold can take a human life! Moreover, in a short lifespan of a few decades, humans can only learn basic knowledge. By the time a person truly begins to delve into academic studies, one foot is already in the grave."
"Therefore, I want to use my experiment to tell the whole world that God made a big mistake when creating mankind. Humans should be the product of a combination of high intelligence and strong body, not the defective products we are now, which would be crushed to pieces with the slightest touch!"
Upon hearing Wayne's words, Aldenan and Carroll gaped in astonishment.
"You want to play the role of God and change humanity?!" Carroll looked at Wayne in disbelief, her tone full of doubt.
“I am not playing God, my child. My mission is to clean up God’s mess and correct his failed works to the right form.”
Carroll stared at Wayne, shaking his head vigorously: "You, there must be something wrong with your thoughts and actions!"
Seeing Wayne on the verge of exploding, Aldenan jumped in to act as a peacemaker: "Actually, I think Mr. Dunlop has a point. The human body is really too fragile. The day before I was given the ability, I just got caught in the rain and started to have a fever, and then I fainted."
Carol looked at Aldenan in surprise: "Getting a fever from being caught in the rain? Me too."
Wayne's expression froze, then he suddenly grabbed the two people in front of him like a madman and shouted, "Explain in detail!"
Aldenan nodded hurriedly and said, "The night before the power infusion, I went to the underground fighting arena to participate in a competition. Because I unintentionally won the predetermined championship, I was knocked unconscious by a group of people in an alley when I came out. In the middle of the night, it rained heavily in Muxi City, and I was soaked all night. The next day, after receiving the power infusion, I had a high fever as soon as I got home and I fainted."
Wayne turned his gaze to Carroll, his face filled with urgency.
Carol scratched the back of her head: "That night I had a huge fight with my family, and I ran out into the street alone, with nowhere to go in the pouring rain. Later, after receiving the superpower, I returned home with a high fever..."
Wayne slowly released the two, his expression as if he had seen the door to a new world: "Rain, fever, immune system, nerve block... So that's how it is, so that's how it is!"
As Wayne laughed and began his experiment, Aldenan and Carroll exchanged a glance, both completely bewildered.
