Chapter 691 The First Showdown with Death (Part 2)

Cumberland said to his adjutant, "Pass down the order: prepare for battle!"

As the long horn sounded, the knights of the Twilight Knights began to urge their warhorses forward, slowly advancing towards the battlefield.

As the march progressed, the knights adopted an unusually loose formation, with the gaps between them widening.

After the Knights had advanced three hundred meters, the drums of the Crusader army also sounded to signal their advance.

The first and second formations, one after the other, were almost touching and moved simultaneously, beginning to catch up with the Knights at a very slow pace.

The knights marched forward for about two kilometers and gradually dispersed into more than a dozen squadrons.

Meanwhile, the first and second phalanxes of the Crusader were already nearly a kilometer behind the Knights, trailing far behind with no intention of increasing their speed.

As for the Crusader's third-party formation, the lizardmen, ratmen, dwarves, and others remained in place, not moving an inch.

Standing atop a makeshift watchtower on the city wall, Cumberland looked into the distance through a monocular telescope and said to his adjutant, "Tell those lads to remember that keeping their distance and using speed differences is the most crucial thing."

The adjutant nodded, and the honeycomb communicator on his dragon bone armor began to emit a faint beeping sound.

After relaying the instructions, the adjutant glanced at the binoculars in Cumberland's hand and said in a low voice, "Sir, the Hawkeye ability is a very convenient power."

As Cumberland observed the battlefield, he waved his hand and said, "I don't like all that nonsense. In the end, the only things a knight can rely on on the battlefield are his sword and his horse."

The adjutant glanced at Cumberland's dragonbone armor, shrugged, and said nothing.

The knights marched another three kilometers before finally stopping on a grassland about five kilometers from the walls of Muxi City.

Just then, on the distant horizon, black dots appeared one after another, followed by a large, dark mass of undead swarming in, growling as they staggered toward them.

The undead had rotting flesh and glaring white bones. Violently writhing black parasites, like tentacles, swayed incessantly on their bodies. If you looked closely, you could still vaguely recognize their appearance before they were born.

Farmers, artisans, soldiers, nobles—their original identities are no longer of any use in the face of death.

Besides the original humans, what was even more striking was a large herd of livestock and wild animals.

Cats, dogs, cows, pigs, wolves, bears...

The fur on these animals had long since rotted to a grayish-white color, revealing blackish-purple decaying flesh.

Cumberland, who was observing the undead, put down his binoculars and said in a low voice, "There are more of them than I thought."

The adjutant leaned closer and said, "As the horde of zombies moves, it will continuously absorb those wandering undead, so its numbers will grow larger and larger; moreover, when the Valkyrie counts the numbers from high above, large targets such as humans and livestock are easy to calculate, but small targets such as cats and dogs are easy to overlook."

Cumberland said, "There's no use thinking about this now. Get the Valkyries airborne. We need their support... Operate according to the original plan."

Adjutant: "Yes, Commander!"

Dozens of Valkyries riding griffins slowly rose into the sky from the city, and the Knights of Twilight began their advance.

More than ten squadrons, consisting of hundreds of knights, began to approach the horde of zombies from multiple directions.

As for the first and second phalanxes of the Crusaders, they were now more than three kilometers away from the Knights.

Just then, an order was issued to every soldier of the Crusader Army—remain where you are and do not move.

At the forefront of the battle formation, the orc Carol, who had been ordered to stop, gripped his double-bladed axe tightly, craned his neck to look ahead, and asked, "Why are we being told to stop?"

Aldenan, the werewolf standing next to him, said nonchalantly, "What's wrong with that? If those on horseback can take care of the undead, we can just watch."

Carol glared at Aldenan.

At this moment, a dozen or so knightly legions approached from all directions, closing in to within 500 meters of the zombie horde.

Finally, some of the undead noticed the approaching knights.

With a deafening roar, the undead began to rush madly towards the nearest knight legion, and the entire horde of corpses was instantly torn apart, turning into dozens of hordes of corpses running wildly across the grassland.

The knight commander, who was leading the knightly regiment, used the beehive on the keel to send a signal, and the entire regiment quickly turned its horses around and retreated in the opposite direction.

And so, a dozen or so knight squadrons led the scattered horde of corpses and began to run in different directions, to the southeast, northwest, and northeast.

Two of the knightly squadrons attracted about three hundred undead, causing them to retreat towards the Crusader's phalanx.

Standing atop the watchtower, Cumberland stared at the undead charging towards the Crusaders and said, "It's their turn to contribute."

The adjutant, who was using the cellular communication system, suddenly looked up at Cumberland and said, "Grand Commander, the Ninth Squad has discovered a rapidly mutated undead."

Upon hearing this, Cumberland quickly picked up his binoculars and looked. Among a group of undead in the northwest of the battlefield, there was one undead wearing a gray-white top. It was running on all fours like a leopard, almost at the speed of a hybrid warhorse.

Cumberland said in a deep voice, "Take care of him!"

Seconds later, a Valkyrie, who had been circling in the air, directed her griffins to approach the Ninth Knights Squadron. She raised her bow and arrow, aimed at the relentlessly pursuing, rapidly mutated undead, and pinned it to the grass with a single shot.
