Chapter 307 Admonition Before the Tombstone

Cumberland and Emerson stared at the beautiful woman before them with suspicion.

Cumberland looked Dion up and down and said to Todd, "Your Majesty, are you sure? Sending someone like that to the Holy Guard City will probably result in him being devoured without a trace, not even bones left."

Dion patted the sword at his waist and raised his head: "Commander, my swordsmanship is sufficient to protect myself."

Todd laughed at this point: "I can guarantee that. As the executor, Dion often has the opportunity to hone his swordsmanship."

Emerson stroked his mustache, pondering as he said, "However, Dion, your analysis of the struggle for the throne can indeed explain the series of events that have occurred. I believe this inference is highly reliable."

Todd paused for a moment, then asked again, "So, do you think Knight Dion is suitable to serve as the head of the Twilight City delegation?"

Cumberland glanced at the king and shrugged: "If Your Majesty deems it appropriate, I have no objection."

"Emerson, and you?"

"Knight Dion's intelligence gathering, analysis, and summarization abilities have surprised me, and his overall perspective fully meets the requirements of the mission leader." Emerson looked at the young man, who was only in his early twenties, and said with concern, "But if I remember correctly, you have always lived in the Papal States and have never been to Holy Guard City. You probably know nothing about the local customs and traditions, especially the relationships between the powerful and the weak. This will be detrimental to your work."

Seeing that he finally had a chance to escape his boring life of doing nothing, Dion was not about to let such a reason ruin his hopes for his mission: "Then, I request the accompaniment of a deputy envoy. With a guide who is familiar with the local environment, I am fully confident that I can gain a foothold in Saint-Guardian!"

Emerson and Todd exchanged a glance, the latter falling into deep thought, muttering to himself, "The deputy envoy?"

After a moment, Todd suddenly said, "I have someone in mind."

Two hours later, Mary arrived in the King's audience chamber and, upon hearing Todd's request, exclaimed in surprise, "You want me to be a member of the Muxi Mission to St. Guard?!"

Todd sat in his chair and wrote furiously: "The Kingdom of Muxi has never dealt with Holy Guard City. You are the only one among us who knows the situation."

Mary bit her lip: "Your Majesty, aren't you worried that after I return, I might secretly collude with the people of Holy Guard City and stand against the kingdom?"

Todd put down his pen, raised his head, and looked at Mary: "Since I'm willing to entrust this task to you, it means I trust you unconditionally. Besides, the purpose of Muxi City's mission this time is to provide food aid to Holy Guard City, not to declare war on them. You don't need to worry about any conflicts between the two countries."

“To be honest, I have no good fortune in my birthplace,” Mary said, sitting across the desk and watching the sun gradually set outside the window. She murmured as if in a dream, “From the moment I was born until the moment I got married, I was never allowed to leave that castle that was like a prison.”

"They saw me as a commodity to be sold. I couldn't go out in the sun because it would tan my skin. I couldn't run or jump because it would leave scars on my body. Like a bird kept in a cage, I preened my feathers and put on makeup every day, just so that one day I could be sold for a good price."

Todd gently put down his pen. The sorrowful face before him made his heart tighten. "Mary, if you resist this assignment, I can find another deputy envoy. All you need to do is give the mission a detailed introduction to the situation in St. Victory City before they set off."

“No, I will go. Why not?” Mary took a deep breath, like a mischievous girl climbing onto a roof, and looked at Todd with a smile, saying, “When you deliberately stay away from the painful places in your life, you will find that the nightmares in your heart will grow bigger and bigger. The best way to overcome fear is to face it, not to run away from it.”

Mary, her eyes crinkling with a smile, looked at Todd with unwavering resolve and certainty: "Besides, I am no longer the puppet I used to be, at the mercy of others. I have my own home, and things I am willing to protect with my life."

Seeing Mary's determined look, Todd nodded: "I understand. I will have Cumberland send the Knights' most elite troops to protect the safety of the entire delegation."

After dealing with the selection of the delegation, the sky was already filled with stars. Hungry Todd walked towards his bedroom and saw a familiar figure at the end of the corridor.

Because of a spinal injury sustained in the war, Huggins, who had difficulty moving, leaned against a pillar and repeatedly rubbed the muscles on his thighs with his palms to relieve the fatigue in his legs.

Todd walked down the corridor, coming up behind Huggins, and said, "You need a cane."

Upon seeing the king, the latter quickly straightened up, moved his legs and feet, and indicated that he was alright.

Todd walked up to Huggins, looked at his hesitant manner, and said in a deep voice, "Speak your mind."

Huggins lowered his head and said softly, "Mrs. and Mrs. Raglan are willing to donate a portion of their wealth to build a welfare hospital for immigrants outside the city in the name of the King."

Upon hearing this, Todd looked at Huggins with a sharp gaze: "Your idea?"

Huggins shook his head slightly: "It was Mr. Raglan's idea."

Todd's expression relaxed, and he sighed almost imperceptibly: "Take some money from the palace treasury, add it to their donations, and build a decent medical facility for the immigrants outside the city. Don't do it in my name; do it in the name of that couple."
