Chapter 392 Nation and Family (Page 1/1)
"Your Majesty, the defense of Holy Guard City has been a resounding success!"
Holding the battle report, Huggins jogged over and pushed open the half-closed door of the king's audience chamber, excitedly shouting.
When he saw that not only the king was sitting in the room, but also another familiar woman was standing, he couldn't help but shut his mouth.
Todd gestured for Harkins to bring over the battle report, glanced at it briefly, and nodded to indicate that he understood.
Backing out of the audience room, Huggins slowly closed the door, stared at it for a long while, and finally frowned and turned to leave.
Todd opened the battle report, saw a passage, and smiled as he said to Rachel, "It also mentions your Alien Association."
Rachel brushed a stray hair behind her ear and asked with interest, "What does it say up there?"
"Before the war, the church alliance secretly contacted the remnants of the nobles in the city, planning to dig a tunnel at the foot of the mountain where the palace is located and take the city from the inside." Todd patted the battle report and said happily, "Thanks to the Alien Association and Gordon of White River Fortress, they found the tunnel in the city in time and captured the inside man."
Rachel shrugged: "In reality, the war only lasted two days. Even if the tunnel had not been discovered, the kingdom's victory would not have changed."
“That’s not how it works. If the war reaches a stalemate, or if there’s another ambush, this tunnel could become a major hidden danger.” Todd picked up his pen and wrote on the paper as he spoke. “The people you arranged deserve to be rewarded.”
Rachel walked over to Todd, took the hand holding the pen, and said softly, "I have something more important to ask you than that."
Todd looked at Rachel and asked, puzzled, "What do you want to ask?"
A look of hesitation crossed Rachel's face: "Do you really want to return to the Shadow Kingdom?"
Todd put down his pen and nodded to Rachel.
"You should have thought about what this country would be like when Muxi City has no king?"
Todd sat up straight: "A country doesn't necessarily need a king to run everything. When the government is functioning properly, the king becomes more like a symbol, a sign, for the country."
Rachel shook her head in confusion: "I don't understand what you're saying. How can a country not need a king?"
Todd rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. He could perhaps reach some consensus with Emerson on the matter of the form of government and political system, but when he talked to Rachel, although the latter was intelligent, he found it difficult to understand the complexities involved.
“Ratchet, let me put it simply. I am a mortal, a mortal with many flaws.” Todd said with a wry smile, “I greatly admire those omnipotent and wise monarchs in history who were able to foresee everything and grasp the situation.”
Todd pointed to himself and shook his head helplessly: "But I don't think I can do what they do. I'm a bit dull, a bit lazy, and maybe even a bit insecure. In the near future, Twilight City may face its most brutal war yet. Rather than sitting in the city as king, I should go to the Shadow Kingdom and use my transformation ability to win some victories for this country..."
“I don’t understand why you would think that way!!” Rachel raised her voice. “Your achievements are enough to prove to everyone that you are a great monarch. Do you really think that after you leave, you can make this country better simply through citizen self-governance?!”
Seeing that he could not persuade the other party, Todd opened his soul space and brought Rachel into the conference room.
Seeing Todd turn on the 3D projector, Rachel frowned and asked, "What do you want me to see?"
"The impending disaster facing Muxi City."
Todd projected his memories of military events from the gunpowder age onto the screen.
Knights' flesh and blood were torn apart in the steel storm of muskets; the castle's solid walls were reduced to ruins in the smoke of gunpowder under the bombardment of cannons; and massive warships turned cities into a sea of fire with their cannon fire.
Looking at the scene before her, Rachel's face turned pale. In a trembling voice, she asked, "Is this the gunpowder weapon you once talked about?"
"Throughout the Kingdom of Muxi, everyone is immersed in an era of iron and blood. They are completely unaware that in the not-too-distant south, our neighboring country has entered a new era, an era of firearms."
Todd turned off the screen and sighed softly: "I lived through that era and saw how those weapons could have such a huge impact on history. Although Muxi City now has superpowers, it has almost no chance of winning against gunpowder weapons."
Rachel sat there quietly for a long time, then suddenly said, "At least I know what your unease really stems from..."
Todd gently grasped Rachel's hand: "I know what you're worried about. You're concerned that after I go to the Shadow Kingdom, the kingdom will change its original route and formation, and instead carry out a purge of the alien races, completely destroying all the achievements you've made today."
Rachel closed her eyes: "The aliens are like a bunch of rats crossing the street, never welcomed by anyone. Wherever they go, they are only met with sticks and deception. They finally found a place to stay in Twilight City, but because of the king's departure, their future is once again fraught with difficulties."
"Believe me, none of this will happen. First of all, the mutants have already integrated into life in Muxi City. They can be found in all walks of life, and people have accepted their existence..."
To Todd's words, Rachel smiled and questioned, "Back in ancient Tyre, the aliens also integrated into the Empire and even controlled many seats in the Supreme Council. In the end, weren't they still driven out and slaughtered?"
"...Secondly, I can still use the soul space to hold meetings with the Royal Cabinet and adjust the country's policy direction in a timely manner."
Rachel stood up, walked to Todd's side, and gently kissed his lips: "On the condition that you survive safely. If anything happens to you, everything that exists will vanish."
Todd spread his hands and said helplessly, "Ratchet, the alien race is like a huge family, but Twilight City is not just a family; it also shelters many ordinary people. If you have to make a choice between the future of the alien race and the safety of the kingdom, you should know what I would choose."
Rachel hugged Todd and said gently, "I understand. You are the king of Twilight City. You must not only protect the safety of the alien races, but also ensure the future of the Twilight Kingdom. This is your responsibility, and it is your destiny."
Todd pulled Rachel into his arms and said softly in a heavy voice, "I know you can understand me."
Rachel stroked Todd's back, rested her chin on his shoulder, looked into the distance and murmured, "I understand, I understand everything."
