Soul Space, Conference Hall.
Cumberland pointed to the holographic map floating in mid-air: "Fifteen kilometers east of Holy Guard City, in the hilly area, we dug three eight-kilometer-long trenches and set up a large number of traps and troops to stop the advance of the undead army."
"Just now, the frontline troops and the vanguard of the undead made their first contact."
Todd looked at the map and nodded toward Cumberland.
Cumberland said, "I'm now showing you the battlefield footage, which is from a Valkyrie on a bombing mission."
Soon, the map slowly disappeared, and a huge screen slowly rose from the center of the conference table.
The screen lights up, and the first thing you see is a blue sky and a griffin beneath you. This is the first-person perspective of a Valkyrie riding a griffin.
Her eyes took in the entire war and sent it all to Todd's soul space.
In the distance, at the edge of the field of view, huge black waves rise from the horizon and surge toward the defensive line.
Corpses possessed by black parasites—humans, cattle, horses, cats, dogs, rats… there’s something for everyone.
They were like maggots attracted by flesh and blood, spreading out and filling all the space on the earth.
They had no formation, no tactics; their only instinct was to charge forward.
Directly above the hill, a defensive force composed of Saint Guard soldiers and Crusaders surrounded the entire hill with earth, stones, and fences, forming a towering and sturdy temporary fortress.
The undead surged towards the hill defense line like a tidal wave, causing considerable unrest among the Holy Guard soldiers in the defending forces. Small-scale desertions occurred among the frontline troops, but the desertions were stopped under the control of the supervisory team.
"The Holy Guard's army has been lax for too long," Cumberland said with dissatisfaction.
Todd shook his head: "No army can be fearless when faced with an enemy beyond imagination."
As Cumberland watched the screen, he said, "The undead have reached the first trench."
Thousands of undead, covered in black parasites, frantically fell into the first trench.
The roars of humans, the barking of cats and dogs, and the mooing of cattle and horses echoed and amplified incessantly in this trench nearly ten meters deep, sounding like the sounds of hell emanating from the depths of the earth.
Bugles sounded from the military camp on the hill.
Soon, a flaming arrow streaked across the sky and shot straight into the first trench, igniting the firewood and oil placed inside.
A raging fire erupted in an instant, and the crackling sounds of bones and flesh exploding under the intense heat echoed throughout the entire battlefield.
The undead army's charge was firmly blocked outside the trench by the fire.
Seeing this scene, Todd and Cumberland did not breathe a sigh of relief; instead, they frowned.
Todd asked Cumberland, "You just said that this is the vanguard of the undead."
"The undead coming from the direction of Tero City, after sweeping through the surrounding countries, have gradually expanded into an army that cannot be counted."
"This army is mainly divided into three routes: one heading east towards the desert; one heading north towards the snow-capped mountains; and the last one heading west towards us. The western route is the largest in number."
"And the undead that are currently attacking Holy Guard City are the smallest of the vanguard of this army."
"The reason we chose to fight outside the city this time is to allow our army to adapt to the undead's attack patterns and find corresponding solutions."
As Cumberland spoke, the undead army continued to charge into the sea of fire, showing no fear of the flames whatsoever.
The bodies piled up higher and higher in the trench, soon exceeding the height of the trench itself.
The undead behind them, stepping over the still-burning corpses in the trenches, charged straight through the first line of defense.
Soon, the second bugle call sounded.
The Valkyrie, the owner of the first-person perspective, put her hand to her mouth and whistled.
The griffin beneath her flapped its wings and soared into the sky, before swooping down towards the ground after reaching its maximum altitude.
The undead army drew ever closer to the griffins, so close that they could even see the parasitic limbs writhing on the corpses.
The Valkyrie suddenly pulled the clasp on the griffin's back, and dozens of spore bombs fell to the ground from the net under the griffin's belly.
The Valkyrie patted the griffin's head hard and then whistled loudly.
The griffin flapped its wings forcefully, instantly raising its entire body several meters in height, and flew straight towards the clouds.
Behind them, accompanied by a deafening explosion, a huge shockwave shook the Valkyrie and her mount.
A few seconds later, the Valkyrie turned around and looked behind her. A huge fireball rose from the ground, and limbs and blood washed over the ground like a torrential rain.
The entire battlefield fell into a deathly silence.
Just when everyone thought the dust had settled, the undead army moved once again.
Reefs can block the waves, but they cannot block the entire ocean.
The black sea of parasites, passing through the smoke and flames, continued its charge towards the hilly position.
The Valkyrie, in first-person perspective, quickly piloted her mount to fly backward. By the time she replenished her spore bombs and flew back to the front line, the undead had already filled the second trench and were charging towards the last trench.
Arrows, rocks, and oil canisters were constantly being hurled from the hilly positions, like pebbles thrown into a pond, occasionally creating small ripples, but ultimately doing nothing to help.
