Looking at Yu Wanwan, his eyes were filled with obvious love. His gaze was pure, and he showed his utmost sincerity, completely like a young man experiencing his first love.
Yu Wanwan's mind exploded, going completely blank.
She never expected that Lan Yin, whom she considered just a good friend, would suddenly confess her feelings to her.
Without even having time to think further, she immediately waved her hand and said in a panic, "No, no, I only see you as a friend, I've never had that kind of thought. You're a very good person, but... we're not suitable for each other."
She was incoherent, and so excited that she almost bit her tongue several times while speaking.
Lan Yin's eyelashes trembled, and the light in his eyes dimmed rapidly at a visible speed, as a strong sense of loss enveloped him.
Yu Wanwan sensed that he was about to cry, but she had no idea how to handle the situation.
After a long while, Lan Yin finally spoke: "Is it because you hate me that you refused?"
His voice was very soft, like a cloud that would dissipate with a gust of wind.
Yu Wanwan shook her head and said honestly, "It's not that I hate it, it's just that I've already promised my partner that I won't look for another beast husband, and we're really not suitable for each other."
She doesn't belong here. She'll be leaving once her mission is complete, so how could she possibly find a partner here?
If he agrees, what will happen to her after she leaves Lanyin? That would be too unfair to him.
"Is there even the slightest possibility? I'd rather be your suitor than not. I'll stay by your side forever." Lan Yin's voice was bitter as she made her last, humble effort.
Before yesterday, he had been full of anticipation and imagined today's scenario, fantasizing about their future over and over again in his mind, but he just didn't dare to think about what would happen if he was rejected.
Just thinking about it makes him feel suffocated with sadness and helplessness.
As it turned out, the thing he least wanted to happen still happened today. He was rejected by the little female without hesitation, without even the slightest thought.
It turns out she really didn't like him.
Yu Wanwan lowered her head, wishing there was a crack in the ground she could crawl into, so she wouldn't have to face such an embarrassing situation.
Rejecting someone's sincerity is a difficult and cruel thing, especially when it comes to Lan Yin, who has always taken such good care of you.
Overwhelmed by guilt, Yu Wanwan thought of her partner waiting for her to return home a thousand years in the future. Despite feeling extremely guilty, she still chose to resolutely refuse.
"No, not even suitors."
She knew that in the Beastman Continent, female suitors were looked down upon. Lan Yin was truly an excellent male; he was sincere and kind, and he deserved a better female to match him, instead of being ridiculed and spending his life clinging to an impossible hope.
Lan Yin looked away helplessly, then looked at Yu Wanwan.
So... does he really have no hope at all?
His expression was still somewhat dazed, and his mind was not even able to properly process this merciless rejection.
Reason told Lan Yin that he should let it go with a smile, because Wanwan was soft-hearted and would be troubled by his confession. But he didn't want to make things difficult for the little female, and he hoped she could be happy.
Lan Yin struggled to force a smile, but the muscles in his face seemed to be out of control. After trying for a long time, he ended up with an expression that was uglier than crying.
"Lanyin, I'm sorry." She lowered her head and expressed her apology very sincerely.
"It's okay, Wanwan, I know everything."
Lan Yin managed to utter those words with difficulty, and finally managed to smile: "We're still good friends, it's good to be friends from now on."
Even if there's no chance, it doesn't matter; he just wants to see her.
"Here, this is for you. I told you it was for you." Lan Yin handed the flowers over again.
It seemed like he would keep holding it up like that if she didn't take it.
Yu Wanwan had no choice but to reach out and take them, but before her hand could even touch the flowers, the pearls and shells on them scattered and drifted to the ground.
Yu Wanwan quickly reached out, but only managed to catch one piece.
Lan Yin remained motionless, watching helplessly as the seashell flower shattered completely. The once pristine white seashells were now covered in seabed silt, losing all their luster.
Just like him now, Wanwan refused to take him, and he was like an unwanted orphan, standing alone in the same place.
"It seems I can't give this to you either." Lan Yin smiled bitterly, as fragile as a piece of glass.
Lan Yin forcefully pulled Yu Wanwan, who was about to bend down to pick up the fish, and said, "Wanwan, it's already dirty, it will get you dirty."
Yu Wanwan frowned slightly, her eyes filled with heartache: "It can be fixed."
She didn't know how much time Lan Yin had spent doing all this, but she didn't want Lan Yin's good intentions to go to waste.
Crouching down, Yu Wanwan picked up all the seashells and pearls, carefully wiping away the mud, and said to Lanyin, "Actually, they are very beautiful, aren't they?"
Lan Yin stared at her blankly, nodded, and forced a gentle smile, just like always.
"Lanyin, you are more beautiful and precious than these seashells and pearls. You are also an excellent male, and you will definitely meet a better female in the future. When that time comes, you will be happy."
Yu Wanwan tilted her head to look at him, offering her sincere wishes.
In the end, however, she underestimated the orcs' determination to choose a partner and also underestimated Lan Yin's stubbornness.
His love was more passionate and sincere than Yu Wanwan had imagined.
