Chapter Forty-Two: The Dying Bird

She squatted down by the tree again, her stomach growling even louder; she ate several mouthfuls of snow but still couldn't fill her stomach.

If she waits here, she might starve to death in three days at most, or even less.

Yu Wanwan thought for a moment and realized that the animal skin bag might have been lost when she escaped yesterday, perhaps on the road or in the bear's den.

She didn't want to go back and risk it, but she was really hungry, her hands were starting to tremble, and a feeling of powerlessness from hunger washed over her and filled her limbs.

Yu Wanwan thought for a moment, then decided to go back and look around from a distance. If there was any danger, she would run away immediately! If there was no danger, she would retrieve the animal skin bag!

After a long internal struggle, Yu Wanwan finally decided to go back and find the animal skin bag.

Fortunately, it hasn't snowed since last night. The snow was thin on the section of road she ran, and there were still footprints on the snow, revealing the withered yellow grass underneath.

Yu Wanwan slowly walked back along the footprints, and surprisingly, she ended up back at the place where she had fallen yesterday.

Yu Wanwan hid behind a tree and looked down from where she had rolled down. A long line stretched all the way down, and her animal skin bag lay quietly on the snow below.

What Yu Wanwan thought was a bear's den yesterday was actually not a bear's den. Lying on the ground was neither a polar bear nor a brown bear, but a huge red object.

Yu Wanwan stretched her neck to look, and it seemed to be some kind of bird.

In her knowledge, no red bird could be that big.

If you get pecked like that, your head will be pierced right through.

That's too dangerous!

Yu Wanwan turned to leave, but her gaze couldn't help but fall on the animal skin bag again.

Her stomach growled again, and Yu Wanwan leaned against the tree, once again caught in a battle of wills.

You can either be pecked to death or starve to death.

Yu Wanwan didn't want to choose either of them, but she had to at this moment.

Yu Wanwan thought for a moment, and realized that the bird seemed to be sleeping very soundly yesterday, without moving at all.

She went around to the other side to look, and that's when she realized that the other side of the bird was almost entirely black, not the black of feathers, but the kind of black that comes from burning.

There was a large pool of blood in the charred area, which had dried by now. If the bloodstains hadn't been so obvious in the snow, Yu Wanwan wouldn't have known that it was blood.

So she was dying! No wonder she didn't wake up even when there was so much noise yesterday!

Knowing that the beast was no longer in danger, Yu Wanwan's mind immediately started working.

She found a good angle and slowly slid down, trying to avoid rolling down like yesterday. However, the slope was too steep, and Yu Wanwan couldn't stop herself. She rushed down and crashed into the red bird.

The bird's body was still warm at this time, and if you looked closely, you could feel some undulations; it didn't seem completely dead.

Having successfully bumped into things several times without incident, Yu Wanwan grew bolder. She picked up the animal skin bag and took out a flattened pancake. She ate it while circling around the red bird.

One side of the red bird was intact, while the other side was charred black.

The intact side has a very dazzling color. From a distance, the feathers appear bright red, but upon closer inspection, they shimmer and shimmer, making them very beautiful in the sunlight.

The charred side was a gruesome sight, with skin and flesh separated, blood congealed into clumps, and a strange, burnt smell emanating from it.

Most importantly, this bird actually has three pairs of wings! It has a beautiful crest on its head and long feathers at the end of its tail. Yu Wanwan was once again certain that there are still many differences between the beast world and Earth. She had never even heard of this mythical beast before, let alone seen it.

Yu Wanwan took a big bite of the pancake and couldn't help but sigh.

It's such a pity that such a majestic and beautiful bird has perished here today.

well!

Yu Wanwan shook her head and left. Suddenly, a faint chirping sound came from behind her. She turned around and found that the bird's eyes, which had been tightly closed, were open for some reason. They were dark and looked like obsidian.

The red bird called out again, its voice sounding somewhat like a swallow's, clear and harmless.

Unexpectedly, this bird could open its eyes. Yu Wanwan curiously approached and squatted down next to the red bird.

"Are you... are you alright?" Yu Wanwan asked.

Whether the red bird understood or not, the yellow bird opened its beak and let out another clear bird call.

It was amazing; Yu Wanwan felt that the bird meant her no harm, and it seemed to be telling her not to leave.

"Do you want me to save you?" Yu Wanwan asked again.

Yu Wanwan couldn't understand the red bird's call, but this bird was currently the only living creature in this area besides her, and Yu Wanwan couldn't help but want to get closer to it.

Unfortunately, the red bird did not respond this time and quickly closed its eyes.

Yu Wanwan rummaged through the animal skin bag and found the purple gromwell root.

This was given to her by the witch doctor when she had her period, and she kept it all. Because she was going out this time, Bai Jing put a lot of it in the animal skin bag.

Yu Wanwan set the purple herb aside, scooped up the snow in her hands to melt it into water, then moistened a corner of the animal skin and carefully wiped it.

After the dried blood clots were wiped away, there were signs of bleeding again. Yu Wanwan quickly chewed up some purple gromwell root and applied it to the wound, which stopped the bleeding.

The red bird had many charred parts, and Yu Wanwan wanted to clean them up, but she didn't have the tools and didn't dare to tear them apart, so she could only leave them as they were.

After doing all this, Yu Wanwan was actually sweating profusely, and her stomach started growling again.

Yu Wanwan took out the pancake and continued eating. During this time, the red bird opened its eyes again, so Yu Wanwan pried open its beak and stuffed the pancake into its mouth.
