free meal card
The next afternoon in English class, Nanqi's stomach kept rumbling. When she read aloud, her stomach would rumble rhythmically with each word she read. Guo Chao, who was sitting next to her, couldn't help but laugh, but he had to pay attention to classroom discipline and try his best to hold it in. It was extremely difficult for him.
She began to regret having dinner at the same table as Song Zhao. The green leafy vegetables on her plate were not enough to fill her up, and she had to drink four bowls of free soup before she could barely feel full.
Sigh, my sister's stomach is more important than my sister's. If I were eating with Li Jia and Duan Peng, I could mooch off their food and wouldn't be starving like this.
Despite her thoughts, as soon as class ended and Song Zhao stood up, she couldn't help but follow her. Song Zhao went up to the second floor and went to the office of her homeroom teacher, Zhao Rui.
Nanqi decided not to follow any longer and sat down on the last step. All sorts of meat images floated through her mind, and the more she thought about it, the louder her stomach growled.
Perhaps her brain was affecting her sense of smell, because for some reason she smelled the aroma of a hamburger.
Looking up, I saw Song Zhao walking over with a chicken leg hamburger, still unpacking it.
My God, do you expect me to just watch her eat?
Song Zhao waved the hamburger in front of her, "Do you want it? I can sell it to you."
"I'm not buying it." She wasn't just being spiteful; she genuinely didn't have the money.
"I don't want your money, you just need to do the work."
Nanqi's eyes lit up as she stared at the hamburger.
Song Zhao continued, "It's my turn to clean today, so you'd better clean the house for me."
Nanqi looked at her in disbelief: "You're not trying to set me up, are you?"
"Since you're so afraid, then forget it."
Just as Song Zhao was about to put the hamburger in his mouth, Nan Qi snatched it away, took a big bite, and said, "Deal."
After school, Nanqi cleaned with the other students on duty, and she even worked harder than them. She didn't want her employer to point out her mistakes, since she was indebted to them. Meanwhile, Song Zhao, who wasn't doing any work, was diligently writing her homework at her seat, completely unaffected by the surrounding noise.
After the duty was completed and everyone else had left, Nanqi confidently let her inspect the results.
"How about it?"
Song Zhao looked at the clean floor and nodded in satisfaction. "Not bad." Then, she took out a meal card. "I have more money in this meal card than I can spend. It would be great if someone could get up early to queue up and buy me breakfast."
Nanqi was quick to understand; she took the meal card and said with a grin, "I didn't expect that even you good students can't get out of bed."
"I use my brain a lot during the day and need plenty of sleep at night, unlike some classmates who don't like to use their brains..."
"Who are you calling brainless? My grades have always been average, and occasionally even above average."
"You're talking about class grades, right? And that's in Class 4. If you were in Class 2, your grades would probably be the worst."
"You!" Nanqi had just extended her finger but then withdrew it, closed her eyes, and held back her anger.
Forget it, whoever is in charge this month, you're my ancestor or my richest man. After this month, I won't put up with any more mistreatment.
Song Zhao was packing her textbooks into her bag when Nan Qi, seeing that she had finished her homework, shamelessly asked, "Can I borrow your notebook to take a look?"
Song Zhao was amused by her, "What, do you want me to lend it to you to copy?"
"I'm just learning from this, understand?"
"If I don't understand, I won't lend it."
"Hey, putting aside our past grievances, I'm now a member of Class Two, and you're my class monitor. You have a responsibility and obligation to help me improve my grades. How can you refuse a classmate's request for help? That's so irresponsible..."
Nanqi rattled off a whole bunch of things, and Song Zhao's ears hurt from the noise, so he pulled out his notebook and said, "I'll borrow this from you."
"Forehead…"
"You don't want it, huh? Fine then." Song Zhao put away the notebook and said coldly, "Don't say I don't care about your grades."
"Yes, yes, yes," Nanqi muttered softly, "Something is better than nothing."
When Nanqi got home, she opened Song Zhao's notebook. The handwriting was neat and strong, in standard regular script. Different knowledge points were marked with different colors. The notebook was even more beautiful than a textbook.
Now she understood why good students' notebooks could be sold for money.
"Dinner's ready!" Yueyue called out.
"They're here."
Seeing that her mother and sister were not saying anything, Nan Yue deliberately pouted and said, "This steamed fish is my sister's favorite. Mom, what about my favorite sweet and sour fish?"
"What, you think I'm going to make one for each of you?" Wu Hua said.
"No, that's not necessary. I just feel that Mom loves my older sister more," Nan Yue said, deliberately glancing at Nan Qi with her eyes.
"Can't you eat properly? Eat it or not, it's up to you," Wu Hua scolded her.
Seeing Nan Yue get roasted, Nan Qi smiled smugly. Actually, her anger had long since subsided these past few days. It was just that neither she nor Wu Hua would back down, especially after being cold to each other for so many days, neither of them wanted to be the one to speak first.
Yueyue understood what she meant. This fish was a way for her mother to give her a way out, and she had to take that step. She picked up a piece of fish and put it in Wu Hua's bowl, and Wu Hua naturally picked it up and ate it as well.
Nan Yue was finally free from being caught in the middle, and happily ate her rice.
With Song Zhao's meal card, Nan Qi's days became much easier in the next few days. They had agreed that Nan Qi would only use Song Zhao's card in the mornings, but Song Zhao bought breakfast and didn't return the card, then went to queue up for lunch again at noon.
Song Zhao readily accepted, finding a table in advance to sit and wait for her. The two ate together at the same table. Nan Qi could eat meat at every meal, while Song Zhao could save time and effort. Over time, they even developed a tacit understanding while eating.
One day at noon, Nanqi had just entered the classroom when she saw a boy chasing Song Zhao around the room, with others joining in the fun. Confused by the scene, Nanqi asked Guo Chao, "What's going on?"
"Jiang Hongnan confessed his feelings to the class monitor," Guo Chao pointed to the roses on the ground. "Unfortunately, he was rejected by the class monitor."
Nanqi racked her brains for a moment, and realized that Jiang Hongnan was the one who had harassed Song Zhao at the school gate last time. Come to think of it, she had been following Song Zhao all this time and hadn't seen this guy do anything, but today, while she was getting a scolding, he had chased her all over the house.
The rest of the class were cheering and shouting, "Together!" Song Zhao was eventually forced to sit in a corner with a red flag hanging above her head. A group of people surrounded her like Jiang Hongnan's lackeys, while Jiang Hongnan stood in front of her, staring at her like a wolf with an extremely lewd smile. Even though she looked unwilling, those people seemed not to see it, and their voices grew louder and louder.
"Stop yelling, all of you!" Nanqi couldn't explain why, but this farce was inexplicably annoying her.
Everyone turned their attention to her.
"Are you all blind?! Can't you see the squad leader doesn't want to?!"
Nan Qi forcefully pushed through the crowd, grabbed Song Zhao's wrist, and said, "Class monitor, let's go." Jiang Hongnan, who was standing next to her, tried to struggle, but Nan Qi's piercing gaze silenced him.
"If you still can't understand human speech, I'll cut your tongue out."
Nanqi's reputation for fighting was well-known throughout the school. Although some people would talk about her behind her back, all the upperclassmen were afraid of her in front of them, while the lowerclassmen didn't know her well because they would avoid her as soon as they heard her name. No one dared to approach her.
Nanqi glanced around and noticed that it was indeed much quieter.
She pulled Song Zhao all the way to the school playground before letting go of his hand.
The two sat on chairs, gazing up at the azure sky and watching the drifting clouds. A gentle breeze swept across the playground, making them feel refreshed and relaxed. Just then, a faint scent of jasmine wafted into Nanqi's nose. She turned her head and saw that the fragrance was coming from Song Zhao's windswept hair.
"Are you feeling better now?" Nanqi asked.
"Mmm, much better," Song Zhao replied contentedly, smoothing her short hair behind her ear.
"Sigh, I really don't understand why you have so many suitors."
"I don't understand either," Song Zhao said with a wry smile.
"Thank you for earlier."
"Wow, I thought I misheard. It was you who thanked me."
"I never thought I'd thank you one day." Song Zhao smiled sincerely at Nan Qi, her bright eyes and white teeth making her exceptionally beautiful.
Nanqi felt her heart pound against her chest. She quickly turned around, thinking: "Good-looking people attract not only men but also women." She realized she had become a member of the "looks-matter" club.
“Actually, I knew it was you who invited me to take a taxi that day,” Song Zhao said with a smile.
Nanqi was pulled back to reality by her words, "So you deliberately went all that way to mess with me?"
Song Zhao gave a dismissive "hmm," adding, "I feel perfectly justified."
Nanqi laughed and said, "Then I can use your meal card with a clear conscience now."
Song Zhao extended his hand, saying, "Let bygones be bygones."
Nanqi also reached out and shook hands with her, saying, "Let's call it even."
Song Zhao's hands were delicate and smooth, without any flaws except for the calluses on her middle finger.
