Yueyue's "shameful deeds"
"How is Sister Nanqi feeling?" Xiao Hou brought over some fruit.
"Hmm, much better. You and Zhao Zhao have work to discuss, you two go ahead and do your work, don't worry about me."
Song Zhao said, "Let's talk outside."
"Actually, it's nothing. It's just that Sister Cindy said I can't go back if I don't bring you back." Xiao Hou scratched his head, his voice getting softer and softer. As he spoke, he looked at Nan Qi with pleading eyes.
Song Zhao frowned and gave Xiao Hou a cold glare. The chill in his gaze made Xiao Hou instinctively shrink back.
"Zhaozhao, go ahead and do your work. Yueyue is here to keep me company."
Song Zhao sighed softly, hugged Nan Qi, and said gently, "Then I'll be back as soon as possible." After saying that, he bent down and kissed her forehead, then turned around and whispered some precautions to Nan Yue before putting on his sunglasses and mask and returning to his work mode.
After Song Zhao left, Nan Qi listlessly flipped through her comic books, reading page by page absentmindedly, which made the time pass a little faster. However, Song Zhao didn't return that night, and without his familiar presence beside her, she tossed and turned, unable to sleep soundly. The next day, she wanted to call Song Zhao, only to find that he had taken her phone.
"Yueyue, can I borrow your phone?"
"What are you doing?"
"Call your brother-in-law."
"Oh." Nan Yue dialed Song Zhao's number directly and then put it on speakerphone. "I've dialed it for you, go ahead and say it."
Hiss~, there's a ghost.
"Yueyue, is Nanqi feeling unwell?" Song Zhao asked anxiously on the other end of the line.
"Don't worry, I'm fine," Nanqi chuckled, her tone reassuring. She cut to the chase: "Do you have my phone?"
"Let me look for it, oh, it's really here with me, I accidentally brought it with me."
"It's alright, as long as nothing's lost. How's your situation going? Is it complicated?"
"It's alright, there are a lot of things to do, but we can handle them."
"Yes, Yueyue is here with me, so you don't need to worry about me. Focus on your work."
"Okay, I'll go back as soon as I'm done. You need to eat well, sleep well, and listen to the doctor, okay?"
"I heard you, I will, don't worry. Love you."
"Love you."
After hanging up the phone, Nan Yue quickly put it away. Looking up, she saw Nan Qi staring intently at her, making her feel uneasy.
"What exactly are you hiding from me?!" Nanqi asked with a serious expression.
"Sis, what are you doing?!"
"one"
"two!!"
Nanqi's tone grew increasingly harsh, and Nanyue was on the verge of tears, saying aggrievedly, "What are you doing? I don't understand anything about my brother-in-law's affairs. If you don't ask her, you'll just bully me..."
"Then give me your phone."
"No."
Nanqi's eyes widened instantly, her gaze sharp, as if she were about to devour her alive.
Nan Yue looked at her, her skin crawling with fear, and she shakily handed over her phone.
Nanqi took her phone, opened Weibo, but it wouldn't load. Then a text message popped up saying she was in arrears.
She was speechless. "You're out of credit right after making a call? How long has it been since you topped up your phone?"
Nan Yue wiped away her cold sweat and chuckled, "I just topped up 100 last time, it was about two months ago..."
Nanqi put down her phone and leaned against the edge of the bed, feeling frustrated. She knew something serious must have happened, otherwise she wouldn't have kept it from Nanyue. But besides sitting there, watching the IV drip slowly, there was nothing she could do.
This hospital bed was like an invisible cage, completely isolating her from the outside world. This suffocating feeling of having something on her mind but knowing nothing about it was even more torturous than when she was in detention.
"Sis, why don't you read some more comic books?"
Nanqi rolled her eyes at her irritably and turned her head away.
"How about I tell you a joke?"
"Shut up!"
Nanqi clearly didn't want to listen to her right now.
Nan Yue sat on the edge of her bed, shrugged and said, "Well, I can't use my phone anymore anyway. You're not going to talk to me. How are we going to get through this day?"
"Then you should go back."
"Hmph, you're always saying such inhuman things." Nan Yue paused and said, "There's something... I've been keeping from you for a long time, and you must be curious."
Seeing that Nanqi didn't refute her anymore, she continued, "The time I followed my brother-in-law, I skipped a class, not to see you sooner."
Nanqi turned her face back, genuinely curious about what she had said.
"I went to your school to see so-and-so..."
Upon hearing this, Nanqi's anger flared up. Liu Xiaodong was a sophomore in high school at the time, and his school ended half an hour earlier than hers. No wonder Nanyue insisted on skipping class; it was all to see that scumbag!
She thought her good sister was doing it for her sake, and ended up getting beaten up for nothing.
"If I'd known you were here to see scumbags, I should have broken your legs that very night!"
"Don't be angry. I really regret making you get beaten up. I wanted to tell you and Mom later, but I didn't know how to say it..."
"Why would you go see him? Are you just asking for trouble?"
"Um…"
"Ha... you're a fucking masochist."
"I was so stubborn back then. I just wanted to confirm whether he was really with someone else so I could finally give up."
"As soon as I arrived at your school gate, I saw him and that girl with their arms around each other, looking very intimate. When he noticed me, he even greeted me with a grin, acting like nothing had happened."
“I was standing there feeling really sad, but then I thought about it and realized it wasn’t worth it. From then on, I gave up on him completely and never contacted him again. Two years ago, he suddenly called me, but I didn’t answer. After that, I just blocked him. Out of sight, out of mind.”
"You're smart enough to know your place, otherwise you really would have become Third Sister." Nanqi got angrier the more she thought about it. "No way, stand up and let me kick you a couple of times."
"Oh no! This is a hospital! How embarrassing would it be if a nurse came in and saw us?"
"Now you know you care about saving face? Why didn't you care about saving face when you did something stupid back then?"
"Well, I know I was wrong. Everyone has been young and ignorant at some point."
"That won't do either. This is what you owed me back then, and I have to pay it back."
Nan Yue pouted, stood up slowly, turned her back to her, and deliberately put her hands on her hips: "Okay, okay, hurry up."
Nanqi showed no mercy and kicked her hard in the buttocks.
"ah!"
Nan Yue suddenly leaned forward, staggering and grabbing the bedpost. She winced and cried out in pain, thinking to herself: Sure enough, she never shows me any mercy! She rubbed the spot where she had been kicked, turned around angrily, and said, "You really went all out!"
"Turn around and stop talking nonsense!"
Nan Yue immediately put on a tearful expression, slowly turned around and stood up straight, even dramatically closing her eyes.
"Wow, you're pretty fearless, aren't you?"
Nanqi snorted, but this time she only lightly tapped her with the ball of her foot and said indifferently, "Alright, I'll let you off the hook."
Nan Yue suddenly opened her eyes, her face filled with disbelief: "You..."
"What? Want to take another hit?"
Nan Yue quickly waved her hand and said, "No, no more..."
"Okay, we're even now, I forgive you."
After their argument, Nanqi's pent-up anger dissipated considerably. Gazing at the sunlight outside the window, she suddenly realized that if it weren't for Nan Yue's messy affairs back then, perhaps she and Song Zhao would never have met. It seems that fate has already arranged things in the dark.
Wu Hua brought lunch today. She first asked Nan Qi if she was alright, and then took out several changes of clothes from her bag. The mother and daughter didn't say much, afraid that they might say something inappropriate and cause awkwardness between them.
Nanqi noticed Wu Hua's hesitation, but since Wu Hua didn't bring up the topic, she didn't want to bring it up either.
After lunch, the nurse came in with the IV drip to give her the injection. Wu Hua left only after seeing that she was on the IV. As she was leaving, Nan Qi suddenly felt an urge to hug her, but she found that she could no longer act like she did when she was a child, acting all cute and affectionate. It was as if an invisible chasm had silently stretched between the mother and daughter.
For the rest of the time, Nanqi could only stare at the medicine bottle in a state of restlessness. Her mind was filled with Song Zhao's image, which made her anxious and unable to sit still.
She couldn't help but wonder about Song Zhao's situation, and her fingertips unconsciously clenched into fists.
"Sis, don't clench your fist so tightly, it's causing your blood to flow back!"
Nanqi reluctantly let go of her hands and placed them on the blanket. She especially hated the feeling of her hands being restrained at this moment, feeling uncomfortable all over. She simply closed her eyes and forced herself to fall asleep.
She was fast asleep when a sudden, urgent knocking on the door startled her awake, and also woke up Nan Yue, who was nestled next to her.
The door was suddenly pushed open, and Cindy appeared in the doorway, saying urgently, "Nanqi, Xiaowei needs you."
