Chapter 11 Could you give me a ride along the way?
In front of her is her ex-boyfriend whom she doesn't want to acknowledge, and behind her is her stepson whom she doesn't want to acknowledge.
Caught between a rock and a hard place, Luo Xincheng momentarily considered turning around and taking the stairs.
But after hesitating for two seconds, she still entered the elevator as if nothing had happened.
Wang Chenyi followed closely behind, his probing gaze sweeping over the two people in the elevator who both wore the same cold expression.
"Does your sister know this gentleman?"
Luo Xincheng leaned against the elevator, looking down at her phone, and said dismissively, "None of your business."
Fu Zhiheng, who was drowsy and not quite in the zone, was hit on the head by this affected "sister".
Where did she get so many younger brothers from?
Seeing that the two didn't even exchange glances, Wang Chenyi quickly lost his curiosity about the strange man.
He lowered his head to face Luo Xincheng, and extended an invitation with a smile, "There's a really good afternoon tea place nearby, shall we go together later?"
Luo Xincheng replied without looking up, "I'm controlling my blood sugar."
"..." Wang Chenyi pursed his lips, then offered a compromise, "How about a cup of coffee?"
"I'm not caffeine tolerant, so drinking this at this time will keep me awake."
"That tea..."
"I am also intolerant to tea polyphenols."
Wang Chenyi was silent for a moment, then took a deep breath. "What about the juice? You won't be unable to sleep if you drink juice, will you?"
Luo Xincheng glanced at him dismissively, "Didn't I tell you at the beginning? I'm controlled by sugar intake. Can't you understand human language?"
"..."
The elevator suddenly fell silent.
Fu Zhiheng turned his head away silently, but Luo Xincheng still caught a glimpse of his obviously upturned lips.
What's so funny?
She looked down at her phone, ignoring both of them.
Before he could finish speaking, Luo Xincheng suddenly snatched his mask away.
He was startled and instinctively covered his face. Seeing her raise her phone expressionlessly, the ominous premonition in his heart grew stronger.
"What are you doing?!" He hurriedly raised his hand to cover her camera.
Luo Xincheng quickly dodged his hand and started editing, "I'm going to take a picture of your ugly face and post it in your fan supertopic, saying you're harassing me."
Wang Chenyi was immediately shocked and furious. "I just invited you for afternoon tea! You didn't have to treat me like this!"
Luo Xincheng stopped typing, glanced at him sideways, and remained silent.
Under her mocking gaze, he put his mask back on and said in a forced voice, "Okay, I won't bother you anymore."
The moment the words were spoken, the elevator descended to the first floor with a "ding".
Before the elevator doors had fully opened, Wang Chenyi impatiently strode away.
Luo Xincheng pursed her lips at his departing figure, turned off her phone, and was about to put it in her pocket when she caught a glimpse of Fu Zhiheng still there. She immediately turned her phone back on and pretended to look at it.
After a while, the elevator doors opened completely.
She lingered with her phone in her hand, and seeing that he showed no sign of moving, she assumed he was going to the basement and immediately stepped out before the door closed.
Stepping onto the gleaming tiles outside the elevator, before she could even catch her breath, a long shadow loomed over her, merging with her own.
Luo Xincheng: "..."
Why are you waiting in the elevator for so long if you're not going to the basement?
She took a barely audible breath, firmly remembering the amnesia setting, and walked forward without looking to the side.
Fu Zhiheng followed closely behind and asked cautiously, "Who was that just now...?"
"None of your business," Luo Xincheng was about to say when she turned her head to look at him, but her attention was drawn to the dark circles under his eyes.
The weariness was almost overflowing, even though it couldn't be hidden by his glasses.
The words that were on the tip of my tongue were inexplicably swallowed back down.
It is said that wealth nourishes people, but in the two days of their reunion, Luo Xincheng did not see much of the spiritedness in Fu Zhiheng.
Only a lingering weariness and a faint sense of melancholy seeped out from every crack in his skin, which wasn't hidden by his fine clothes.
Unable to articulate her exact feelings, Luo Xincheng looked away and simply replied, "My stepson."
The huge boulder that had been hanging over them all the way suddenly came to a stop. Fu Zhiheng's brows relaxed, and he carefully chose his tone before asking, "Are you here at the hospital today for a routine check-up after the car accident?"
She shook her head, still sparing with words, "My dad is in the hospital, I'm here to see him."
He asked with concern, "Is your father alright now?"
She nodded. "It's alright."
Anyway, he speaks with great force when he's lecturing people.
After a brief pause, she returned the favor by asking, "Where is Mr. Fu?"
Fu Zhiheng slowly adjusted his glasses, his lips slightly parted, as if he didn't know what to say. After a moment of silence, he said, "Grandpa had a sudden heart attack at two o'clock last night, and I came here with him."
Grandpa… Hearing his somewhat unnatural "Grandpa," and seeing his slightly stiff expression, Luo Xincheng suddenly recalled a day many years ago when, after struggling to organize her maternal grandfather's funeral, he had trembling hands as he pulled her into his arms, tightening his embrace, his chest heaving violently, his breathing like a leaky bellows, rapid and heavy.
"Luo Xincheng, I don't have a grandfather anymore."
"Luo Xincheng, I have no family left."
"Luo Xincheng, from now on, there will be no one waiting for me to eat together after school."
"..."
Back then, Fu Zhiheng probably never imagined that, a few years later, he would inexplicably have a new family.
Fate is truly cruel.
Luo Xincheng paused, then couldn't help but ask, "So you didn't sleep all night?"
"I guess so." He finished speaking and then let out a long yawn, fitting the occasion.
She looks like she could fall asleep any second.
"So you're going home to sleep now?"
He shook his head. "There's a company meeting in two hours, and I have to go."
"..." Luo Xincheng watched him yawn again and again, speechless.
Even in this situation, you still want to go to a meeting? So dedicated!
Just then, Fu Zhiheng asked, "Is Miss Luo going straight home?"
"Um."
"Is your car waiting in the parking lot? If not, I can give Miss Luo a ride home."
His tone was calm, as if he had just decided to do a good deed on a whim, without a trace of eagerness in his voice.
But Luo Xincheng remained on high alert, replying stiffly with a straight face, "No, thank you. The driver is waiting for me in the parking lot."
“Like this…” Fu Zhiheng looked at her hesitantly, as if he didn’t know whether he should speak or not.
Luo Xincheng's eye twitched slightly. "Speak your mind."
He took a deep breath, as if to encourage himself, "Then... Miss Luo, could you give me a ride to the company?"
? ? ?
Almost thinking she had misheard, Luo Xincheng turned her head sharply to look at him, saying incredulously, "You really are quite impolite!"
How could anyone say "on the way"?!
Fu Zhiheng lowered his head, knowing he was in the wrong.
Clearly, he knew how unreasonable his request was; the small tip of his ear peeking out from his dark hair visibly turned red.
Shocked, Luo Xincheng asked in confusion, "Where's your own car? Didn't you just brazenly offer to give me a ride home?"
He immediately explained, "I received a message from the driver when I got into the elevator. He said he was stuck in traffic at the overpass and it would take him another ten minutes or so to get here, so..."
Luo Xincheng understood. "My car is faster, right?"
He nodded emphatically, looked at her, and asked softly, "So, is that alright?"
"..."
Luo Xincheng frowned and turned her face away, avoiding his almost tangible gaze.
Realizing something, Fu Zhiheng lowered his eyelids, suppressing his unnecessary expectation.
"I'm sorry to have put you in such a difficult position."
He said in a low voice, "I have overstepped my bounds."
Luo Xincheng glanced at him with a strange expression, but ultimately said nothing.
The two remained silent for the rest of the way, until they were about to leave the hospital when she suddenly turned to him and asked,
Where is your company located?
Fu Zhiheng was taken aback, and blurted out an address before he could think.
Although Luo Xincheng is a native of Yanjing, he always relies on a driver when he goes out and never remembers the way. So after hearing this address, he specifically searched for it on the map.
"That's quite close to the hospital."
She raised an eyebrow, slightly surprised.
And coincidentally, the building he reported was located between the hospital and her home, so it really was on the way.
"Let's go then." She walked ahead without looking back, leaving with the words, "Consider this a good deed for the day."
Fu Zhiheng stood there stunned for a moment, overjoyed, then, as if suddenly remembering something, he chased after her, his tone earnest.
"Could you wait a moment?"
Luo Xincheng stopped in her tracks, her brows furrowing in displeasure. "What is it?"
"I'm so tired." He smiled bitterly, "but I want to wake myself up a little, so I'm going to the bathroom to wash my face."
Ever since the old man suffered a stroke in the middle of the night and was admitted to the ICU, he hasn't slept a wink. He's been in a daze ever since, and his face is probably oily... He looks terrible.
The car was so small, and her eyesight was good; he didn't want her to see his terrible face right away.
Luo Xincheng hummed in agreement, "Then go ahead."
His gaze then fell on the full parking lot, and soon he found the black Maybach that the driver had driven out that day.
After finding the car, she didn't go over immediately. Instead, she stayed where she was, looking at her phone to pass the time while waiting for someone.
Not long after, Fu Zhiheng walked up to her, dripping wet.
"Sorry to keep you waiting."
He was a little out of breath when he spoke; he probably ran back.
Luo Xincheng lifted her eyelids to look at him and noticed that some of the wispy hairs on his forehead had been swept back, revealing a large expanse of his forehead and highlighting his deep-set features even more. Paired with his narrow, half-rimmed glasses, he looked like a cool and intelligent man.
Water droplets dripped down his chin and meandered down the veins of his neck. He must have been in a hurry to wash his face, and water splashed onto the collar of his shirt, which was already partially soaked and transparent.
Perhaps finding the damp fabric uncomfortable against his skin, he deliberately unbuttoned the top few buttons of his shirt, so much so that when Luo Xincheng casually glanced at his open collar, she caught a glimpse of a vibrant and alluring view.
She casually looked away, turned off her phone, and replied curtly, "It's nothing."
He smiled at her, and at the same time, a drop of water trickled down his forehead, soaking his eyelashes the instant he blinked. When he opened his eyes again, his exaggeratedly long, drooping upper eyelashes were almost stuck to his lower eyelashes.
He slowly wiped the water from his cheeks with a handkerchief, his moist eyes gazing intently at her through his clean lenses, a slight smile playing on his lips.
"Then let's go."
A note from the author:
Isn't it said that traffic is better during holidays? I was suddenly startled by the sudden increase of five favorites in one night! [Angry]
I'm too tired, I'll rest tomorrow, so don't wait up for me!
There will be random red envelope drops in this chapter [cat paw]
