Chapter 201 Cause of Death
Fu Hongyuan's eyes flashed with a hint of sternness, but he quickly looked at Fu Yushu calmly and said indifferently, "So what if you know? Yushu, you haven't come to this point and are still like those naive young people who think that you can get things done just by having a lot of enthusiasm and energy, have you?"
Fu Hongyuan scoffed at Fu Yushu's righteous demeanor. "Since you've brought this up, let's have a proper chat. The Fu family made its fortune in the port and shipping industry of Nancheng. One of our biggest sources of income was reselling and smuggling. In recent years, we've washed our hands of the trade and moved our business behind the scenes. I don't believe you only found out today. If we really think about it, without the shady dealings of the Fu family's ancestors, how could you, Fu Yushu, control the economic lifeline of Nancheng today?"
"You always look down on my methods, but look at yourself, how clean are you? How many shady things did you do to climb to that position?" Fu Hongyuan laughed. "Yushu, you can't be hypocritical. Whether you admit it or not, my son and I are the same kind of people. There is no difference between us. You can put on a pretentious act in front of others, but you don't need to in front of me."
Fu Hongyuan prided himself on seeing through his eldest son, and now, going all out, he directly peeled away the last pretense, stripping away Fu Yushu's hypocritical facade, giving Fu Hongyuan an indescribable excitement and pleasure.
On a whim, he even got up and walked to the wine cabinet next to him, opened the cabinet, picked out a bottle of red wine, poured it into a decanter, and placed two wine glasses on the table between him and Fu Yushu.
“I know you still resent me because of what happened back then, but no matter what, I will always be your father. Everything you did was for the good of the Fu family, and everything I did was also for the good of the Fu family. Since we are on the same path, why insist on distinguishing between you and me?”
"Don't compare yourself to me; I'm not like you."
Fu Hongyuan's words could not sway Fu Yushu's judgment. From a very young age, he had been a person of great judgment and independent thought. What outsiders said was their business. Fu Yushu knew clearly what kind of person he was, what he wanted, and what he wanted to do.
Fu Yushu's stubbornness finally angered Fu Hongyuan.
Fu Hongyuan was just about to pour red wine into a wine glass with a decanter when he heard this, so he slammed the decanter down on the table.
"Do you really have to go against me?!" Fu Hongyuan said coldly, then suddenly changed his attitude, feigning regret. "Can't we, father and son, have a proper talk and chat about everyday things? Do you have to drive me crazy?"
“Mr. Fu, you seem to have misunderstood something. I didn’t come here today to drink and chat with you. We’ve already rambled on and on, and the topic has been changed enough. Since you don’t want to talk about it, I’ll have to let someone else do it.” Fu Yushu looked at Cheng Lusheng.
After the father and son faced off, Cheng Lusheng seemed to get a chance to catch his breath. He tried to minimize his presence as much as possible. The round, ball-like man tried to shrink himself down as much as possible, but little did he expect that he would still be suddenly pulled out.
The word "uncle," in particular, felt like a needle pricking his butt, making Cheng Lusheng shudder and almost jump up.
“What can he say?” Fu Hongyuan stared at Cheng Lusheng, his eyes full of warning, as if to say, “If you dare to say anything more, just wait and see.”
But this warning might have worked if it had been given earlier.
Since discovering that Fu Hongyuan even intended to harm him, Cheng Lusheng became unusually clever, learning to assess the situation and align himself with Fu Yushu for protection.
"Brother-in-law, don't scare me. I'm a coward. If I lose my nerve, I'll blurt out things I shouldn't say. If I accidentally hurt you, don't blame me."
As he spoke, Cheng Lusheng looked at Fu Yushu and said, "I can answer any questions you have. But you must promise me that no matter what I say, you will never hold it against me or the Cheng family."
He knew many secrets, not just Fu Hongyuan's, but many things he and Fu Hongyuan had done together. So if Fu Yushu didn't make this promise, Cheng Lusheng really wouldn't dare to speak up.
They were afraid that they might accidentally lift a stone only to drop it on their own foot.
"Okay, I won't argue with you."
Upon receiving this promise, Cheng Lusheng immediately breathed a sigh of relief. "Alright, ask away! I will tell you everything I know without reservation!"
"The first question is about what you just mentioned, the deaths of Yuan Jing and my mother, what happened?"
Upon hearing this, Cheng Lusheng felt as if half a breath was stuck in his throat, unable to escape or come in.
Fu Hongyuan also stood up abruptly.
Just as he was about to speak, Fu Yushu raised his hand, and the bodyguard standing next to Fu Hongyuan pressed him back into his seat, completely disregarding who Fu Hongyuan was.
“I have already given Mr. Fu a chance to speak, but he is reluctant to open his mouth. I dislike forcing people to do things against their will. Since Mr. Fu does not want to speak, then he should simply remain silent and listen.”
As he spoke, Fu Yushu raised his chin, and the bodyguard took out a piece of cloth and stuffed it into Fu Hongyuan's mouth, forcefully and skillfully.
Watching Fu Yushu's incredibly filial behavior towards his own father, Cheng Lusheng felt his mouth go dry. He subconsciously swallowed, and then began talking like a machine gun:
"Your mother passed away because she discovered your father's illegal business operations and his collusion with illegal foreign forces. She could tolerate her husband not loving her, but she could not accept that the Fu family, which you and Yuqi were to inherit, would be in great danger. She did not want you and Yuqi to pay the price for Fu Hongyuan's mistakes in the future."
"At first, she tried to persuade Fu Hongyuan, but he was unmoved and even had her placed under house arrest. So she thought of getting the Cheng family to intervene and make Fu Hongyuan stop in time."
Thinking of his naive younger sister, Cheng Lusheng shook his head. "Doesn't she realize that if the Cheng family cared about her, why would they let her marry Fu Hongyuan? The Cheng family and the Fu family have long been inseparable. With such huge interests at stake, how could the Cheng family possibly go against the Fu family for her and her two children who haven't grown up yet? That's why your maternal grandfather advised her to stop getting involved in this matter."
"Your mother agreed verbally, but who knew that after everyone had calmed down about this, she took advantage of the banquet to submit the evidence she had gathered to the Nancheng police. That's when things went wrong..."
Fu Hongyuan had long been closely involved with the officialdom in Nancheng. After the information was taken out of the complaint box, those people only glanced at it before passing it on to Fu Hongyuan, without even taking it a step further.
Seeing that Cheng Lin was stubborn and kept causing trouble, Fu Hongyuan devised a scene of her falling down the stairs.
Cheng Lin died at the Fu family villa.
The Cheng family and Fu Hongyuan argued for several days, but of course, it wasn't to get an explanation for Cheng Lin.
The Cheng family's daughter cannot compare to the Cheng family's future prospects.
If a dead daughter can bring greater benefits to the family, then the Cheng family would not mind asking her to die.
How to deal with Cheng Lin's death was not a condition discussed between Cheng Lusheng and Fu Hongyuan, but as the elder brother, he stood idly by last night, and now he said these things in front of Cheng Lin's son. Cheng Lusheng belatedly realized that this was indeed not a very kind thing to do.
Cheng Lusheng stole glances at Fu Yushu, observing his changes, but saw no fluctuation in his emotions. He remained the same as before he heard the words, as if what Cheng Lusheng said had nothing to do with him.
The more Fu Yushu acted like this, the more panicked Cheng Lusheng became. He would rather Fu Yushu had someone beat him up or even kick him, as before, than have him remain expressionless, like the calm before the storm.
"Continue, what happened to Yuan Jing?"
