Almost no one touched the exquisite dishes, as all their attention was focused on the verbal exchanges and promises.
Governor Morgan raised his glass first. "Come on! For our friendship and the future of Illinois! Speaker Reeves is a friend I deeply respect and a vital pillar of the state. This time, he's been maliciously targeted by some unruly old men in New York, causing some minor tax troubles. It's truly despicable!"
He looked at Bill Sterling and said, "Bill, you are the guardian of the tax law and the maintainer of order. I don't think you would approve of this kind of malicious framing by exploiting the rules. I believe in the fairness of the IRS!"
Bill Sterling wiped the corner of his mouth gently with a napkin. His voice was low, but it carried undeniable weight. "Governor Morgan is overly kind. The IRS's responsibility is to ensure that tax laws are consistently and fairly enforced." He turned his gray eyes to Ribbs. "'Malicious frame-up' is a strong word. If the evidence was indeed obtained through illegal means, such as coercion or kidnapping, the direction of the investigation would be completely different. What's important is... to ensure that the process cannot be exploited by those with ulterior motives."
His words were watertight, not promising to suppress the case, but also hinting that the IRS would handle it differently if the evidence itself was problematic.
"Exactly!" Governor Morgan slammed the table, appearing quite excited. "That's the kind of professional discernment we need! We can't let these villains succeed!" He then turned to Eberhart. "Chairman Reebs is considered a key client of yours, and his future potential is astonishing. It's a shame to have such talent suppressed by such scoundrels using such despicable tactics, don't you think?"
General Dynamics' president, Eberhart, smiled slightly, a smile that was calm and powerful.
"Morgan is right," he said, looking at Bill Sterling of the IRS. "...In fact, we at General Dynamics don't completely agree with some of Harold's practices. Since this is an illegal frame-up, I believe the IRS should be able to investigate thoroughly and will definitely not frame Speaker Reebs."
When Bill Sterling heard what Eberhart said, his eyes flickered slightly, and his assessment of Reebs seemed to have worsened.
The person who could make the president of General Dynamics express his support so clearly is definitely not just a gangster boss who got lucky.
"Thank you! Thank you very much!" Reeves showed his gratitude and excitement at the right moment. He stood up and raised his glass solemnly to the three of them: "Governor Morgan, President Eberhart, and Mr. Sterling! I, Reeves, will always remember your righteous words and strong support! This glass of wine is for you three!"
