The cold rails trembled as the train finally stopped beside the dim freight siding at New York's Grand Central Terminal.
Ribs lowered his head and moved with the crowd at a staggering pace.
There were always a large number of homeless people gathered near the train station, and Liebs's outfit perfectly blended in with the place.
The policeman's eyes barely lingered as they swept over him.
After successfully escaping the heavily guarded station area, Ribs did not go directly to Harold's manor, which had been turned into a military fortress.
He knew very well that New York at this moment was a trap full of ambushes for the identity of "Reeves".
He needed eyes, ears, and a point that could penetrate into the Harold Empire without being exposed.
Passing through the maze of back alleys, avoiding patrol police cars and surveillance cameras everywhere, Ribs' target is clear: New York Black Rabbit Security Company.
Thanks to the strict organizational structure established by Alfred and Fox's loyalty, even when the headquarters accounts were frozen and Fox fled, subsidiaries in important locations such as New York still retained their basic structure and local resources.
Soon, he came to a relatively less prosperous neighborhood.
A nondescript sign hangs on the first floor of an old building: "Black Rabbit Security (New York Branch)." The windows are covered in thick explosion-proof film, making it impossible to see inside. The area outside the door appears unusually deserted.
Obviously, the shock of the boss's arrest and the collapse of the head office has already spread here. Even if the freeze order may not have accurately covered all subsidiaries, the panic and wait-and-see mood are enough to bring the business to a standstill.
Ribs didn't go near the main entrance, where anyone paying attention would have noticed.
He walked around to the back of the building and stopped at the end of a back alley filled with empty trash cans and discarded debris. There was an unremarkable small metal door here, which seemed to be an employee entrance only, and it smelled like a mixture of oil and cleaning agents.
He sat like a real puddle of mud in the shadow of the corner, his back against the cold and dirty wall, his hat pulled down very low.
About half an hour later, the small door was pushed open with a creaky sound.
A sturdy man with a strong build, wearing a security company training uniform and with an unshaven beard walked out, holding an empty cardboard box that he was about to discard.
He frowned, obviously disturbed by the stench and groaning in the corner, and subconsciously looked for the source.
When he saw the dirty, frozen homeless man in the shadows, a trace of impatience and disgust flashed across his face. He put the cardboard box next to the trash can and prepared to curse and drive him away.
"Eugene..." A low and hoarse voice came clearly into the strong man's ears.
The blood drained away from Eugene's face in an instant!
"Don't shout, it's me." Reeves spoke very quickly, each word clear, "I don't have time to explain. Now, if you want to save your life, give me a safe place immediately. It must be absolutely clean and no one will know!" His eyes were like a poisonous snake that wrapped around Eugene, "Right now!"
Eugene's heart was beating so wildly that it almost jumped out of his throat.
The man in front of him who was emitting a foul smell was actually the boss Ribs who had disappeared for many days and was wanted by the police!
Eugene looked around and saw no one around, so he quickly brought Ribs into the room.
The interior of the room was filled with engine oil, dust, and a faint smell of sweat. A few dim incandescent lights barely illuminated the piles of tires and the shadows of the shelves.
Eugene turned around abruptly, his bloodshot eyes fixed on the "homeless man" in front of him who exuded an indescribable aura.
"Speaker! You're finally here!" Eugene's voice was very low, but it trembled like a taut bowstring, and was hoarse like crying, "Brothers...brothers are almost in despair! But I knew! I knew you would come!" He was so excited that he was almost incoherent, and his hands subconsciously wiped hard on his dirty work clothes, as if he didn't know how to express the turmoil in his heart.
He glanced hurriedly around the narrow space, as if to confirm that there were no eavesdroppers, then suddenly looked at Reeves, his eyes burning with anxiety: "After Black Rabbit was investigated by the IRS, our people were dispersed, all our accounts were frozen, and there were more than double the number of NYPD and federal agents on the streets, checking people all day long..."
He swallowed, his Adam's apple rolling, and his voice became even more anxious. "How...how did you break through those blockades and get here? The situation outside is extremely tense. They say you killed...killed Governor Morgan and President Eberhart?"
Reeves ignored Eugene's excitement and doubts. He cut straight to the point with an unquestionable look: "Eugene, there's no time for this. My target this time is Harold."
The excitement in Eugene's eyes froze instantly, replaced by a mixture of fanaticism and determination. "That old bastard?! Damn it! The brothers have been frustrated for so many days, waiting for this!"
"You have to help me." Reeves' voice was low and dangerous. "Harold has locked himself in that tortoise shell on Long Island. The FBI, SWAT, his people... layer upon layer, surrounded like an iron barrel. No one from the outside can get in."
"Alright! Speaker, tell me what you want me to do!" Eugene didn't hesitate at all. He practically roared, his back suddenly straightened, muscles bulging under his dirty training clothes. "I'll do it even if it costs my life!"
Ribs stared into Eugene's burning eyes and spelled out his plan word for word: "I want you to pretend to surrender and go to 'join' Harold."
Eugene was stunned for a moment, then his eyes became sharp: "Pretend to surrender? You want me to..."
"That's right." Reeves interrupted him, speaking rapidly, "Tell the old dog that you're desperate. Black Rabbit is finished, the Chicago headquarters is gone, Fox, Heisenberg, and the Butcher are all on the run, and you don't want to die with them. You know I'm different from them. You've seen through it all and want a way out... Offer him some important information."
